I believe India will be better off having a young white-ball coach and an experienced tactician for Test cricket. Hear my thoughts on the successor of Rahul Dravid for the national team.

I would really like to see someone from outside of India to be India's coach, it gives the 3rd person perspective of the game, which is very important given the fact that Indian players don't play club cricket outside of India. Overseas exposure is very important specially if India wants to win more WCs. Indian cricket living in its own bubble is the last thing anyone would like to see. Edit 1: People here comparing every foreign coach to Greg Chappelle. Remember the WC last year, everyone was so optimistic that every cricket expert in India would just hold non stop rants on how mighty our team is and not acknowledging the problems beneath the surface. Not having allrounders was always a problem. Even in finals, all hindi commentators in first Innings said how foolish Cummins was to take bowling first. But aussies had the last laugh. Australian experts clearly have the intellect that very few in India have. Learning from them will never harm us. And stop comparing every expert from Australia to Greg Chappell.

Coach's duty seems to have changed a lot from what it was 10-20 years ago. See how John wright, Gary kirsten or even Greg Chappel did. They could make tweaks to the batting order, do experiments, sometimes they would send bowlers at the top of batting order to utilize powerplays like how irfan pathan used to come at 3, or train batsmen to bowl 3-4 overs to disrupt concentration of opposition, reason why sehwag yuvraj and raina used to give those overs in the middle. Agreed the chappel era had its downside, but things like these helped captains as well, they could save overs of their best bowlers like Zaheer Khan when required, plus it kept the opposition on their toes guessing the next move as well as entertained the audience with surprises. It was good for the game, it helped find newer things like trying different batsmen for opening, middle overs etc. See how Narine opening for KKR has so much impact. Now-a-days coaching job has just become select the playing 11 and the 15, provide captain with these many spin options, that many fast bowling options, these many wicket keepers, fill team hoping for matchups and then leave everything to players and hope for the best. The game has become very predictable in that sense, the oppositions already know what we have planned and they have counter plans. Coaching has just remained a yes man job now, provide captain with the attack he wants and hope they deliver on the day, only now these players can't because opposition teams have studied, analyzed and developed a plan for every single one of them. You will believe me when you see the famous 2021 BGT, how Australia planned and executed the first test, but they had no plans for new players that came in the later matches in that series like Shubhman Gill, Pant, Siraj, Washington Sundar, Shardul, Natarajan, Saini. So no matter what coach we choose, the results are going to be the same for white ball cricket, since everything about Indian team is predictable at this point. When they select a world cup team, each expert can predict almost 8 players correctly of the 11, tells you how each opposition knows about every strength and weakness of our team.

I think IPL should not be used as a yardstick for selections - neither players nor coaches. Its a great platform to showcase India's achievements or prowess but domestic cricket should always be used as the baseline. This will be the number one differentiator from all other nations. Also, successful coaches in domestic cricket (min 2 years) should be given a road map to transition to International levels. I don't see any recently retired cricketers even focusing on domestic cricket. Its time we strengthen the feeder system in India. We are in a great place surely but important to lay foundation for a more sustainable future.

Tom Moody fits perfectly into that overseas coach discussion because of his experience with Sri Lanka (which is also a subcontinent team closer to India in terms of cricketing culture and passion) and the fact that he was involved in coaching an IPL franchise for so many years with a majority of Indian talent, both current and next gen. One other aspect that Harsha himself brought up in one of his interviews in RU-vid with Tom or Nasser Hussain was the split coaching system. A coach can only guide you to do things in a certain way but doesn't call the shots on the ground. So split coaching might be something that can be considered because India has grown leaps and bounds in terms of the style of test cricket they play in the past 10-15 years, but the lack of intent or a backup plan if there was a collapse in a crunch situation which has brought the downfall in all ICC ODI/T20 tournaments post 2013 is the aspect that needs to be fixed almost immediately if not instantly.

Considering the next 50 over world cup i believe that the stronger personalities like rohit, virat are probably not going to be there. In fact that going ahead is going to be the big problem, when does rohit sharma exit, whether virat can play the next 50 over world cup. Who ever the coach will be is going to have to make some tough decisions (which will not be very popular) and is probably going to lead with a relatively inexperienced captain (at the world stage). I agree that it has to be someone who has to understand the white ball cricket very well and considers all angles so we avoid the tactical mistakes made in the last world cup final.

How did Dravid do excellent as coach? Even if this team didn’t had a coach it should have achieved what it achieved just by sheer talent they have in the team. The problem is India has great talent by far the best in world but not producing the results it should produce. India has been playing safe from the word go basically selection of team, when reaching knock out stages. There is a fear of losing vs expressing the skills the individuals and team possess. India had a great leader in Virat for Test matches and he changed the culture from 2014 to 2021 that’s what the results show. But when it comes to ODI and T20 India has performed very poorly on world stage and Dravid did nothing different to change it he kept the status quo running. I thought Ajit Agarkar might be bold in his selection he too played it safe. India needs to change like it did in 2007 big changes and new blood and playing with freedom with ready to take risks without the fear of failure. Harsha trying to describe what characteristics a coach should have be milder and all that is just old school and not focusing on what is actually needed for the team who cares a coach is milder or aggressive or introvert or extrovert everyone cares about what actions are you taking to win Trophies everything else is BS. Just look at Australia two plus decades the mindset is to win trophies and no fear of losing come what may, ready to take big gambles and sometimes it pays off sometimes doesn’t.

Aamir Khan would make a great coach, his performance in Dangal and Taarein Zameen Par is a testament to his coaching abilities. He also did a great job as a cricketer in Lagaan and Awwal Number so comes with a good cricket experience as well.

Well said Harsha, you are always an expert and specialist when it comes to Indian cricket and who else better to understand both TEAM INDIA & BILLION CRICKET FOLLOWERS pulse. Honestly I was not a big fan of Rahul bhai as coach for Team India (in white ball format). Having said this, Rahul bhai is the best coach we can get for Test match format. I wouldn't mind a bit if BCCI can start thinking to have two coaches, Gauti for white ball format (that young Indian coach who understands both INDIA and INDIAN CRICKET) and still convince Rahul bhai to continue in Test match format at least till next WTC finals. Don't forget that Team India has come close to winning the WTC twice and failed, and it would be a fitting tribute to win the WTC this time and send off Dravid in grand-style. We need to start developing Test format with right set of Test players - starting from selecting the right players from domestic circuit which we already are and have a separate Test coach - who can do a much better job than thrusting everything on single coach across both red and white ball formats.

It was the Australian coach who exposed Indians as those who don't know how to celebrate a win. And he coached them to do it. He also said if anyone puts head out, Indians will shut them down. Greg Chappell we are talking about. Indian cricket history can be divided as Kapil's WC win, before Chappell and after Chappell (3 divisions). That significant a role he played. Chappell claimed Dhoni as the sharpest mind he came across and "Dhoni tried things out of the ordinary". Most Indians going abroad, leaves immediately home after a game of cricket at a local club and eat the food prepared by their wives. While westerners stay put for beer and socializing at the cricket club. IPL might have given a glimpse of how to enjoy life with cricket to Indian players as they lived with westerners as room mates. But India badly need western guidance. One example I can give you is , in club cricket in western countries, playing 11 is decided a day or week ahead. So that people who don't play can plan their weekend(respect for everyone's time). In India they bring 15 players on field and captain decides who plays(humiliation fear also gives psychological advantage to captain). This is harassment. Of course, in international cricket pitch decides who plays that day but not in club cricket and social cricket. So for fairness, we need westerners. After all, it was Australia's idea to have computer as selector. And it will be a western country to implement it first. One important thing mentioned by Harsha is that the coach need to know the insecurity of the players as they come from different backgrounds. But actually only an Indian coach will misuse that against them. For eg: they either mistreat the rich(oh he is rich, he can take it) or the poor(he will obey me and he won't judge me because he is poor). For a foreign coach no such differentiation exists. He or she does not need to know the culture of India or the background of player. They don't need to love India either. Cricket is the language. Just focus on cricket and all players will feel respected regardless. Player's trust & acceptance is all that matters. Did Chappell care Dhoni was a village boy? Dhoni's best 3-4 innings were with him, naturally. And most Indians consider Chappell as a villain. India did not have the glitter and glamour of IPL or metro rails and malls when Chappell accepted the role as India's coach. It was pure passion for the game. India need 50 more years to understand Chappell. Not just in cricket, in every walk of life get a westerner as either a friend or coach, you won't regret it. Indians got a taste of how powerful a woman actually is when Shikhar Dhawan and Pandyas wives came in discussion. That is how a woman should be! Not someone paying money as dowry and working like a slave at someone else's home for the rest of their life! And getting abuse disguised as respect in the form of 'ma'. If we respect 'ma' that much then stay inside the kitchen, not outside. Again, learn from the West! Look West not East unless it is down under lol! If you are still not convinced about westerners go to any Hindu Ashram and ask the Guru, whom does he/she like, Indian devotees or western devotees? The guru is guaranteed to say western because they follow his/her guidelines with complete submission. If guru says 6 hour meditation then they will absolutely do it and it is guaranteed! (check comment for Dhoni-Chappell specifics )

"Dhoni's innings of 183 not out against Sri Lanka, unbeaten 77 and 72 not out in Pakistan and an explosive 96 against England stand out as some Dhoni's most memorable knocks during the Chappell tenure." Google the text for exact match to find the news article. Cannot attach link here.
