As a US med student at a prestigious program, now halfway through my third year, I’ll just share a little unsolicited advice. Make sure to take time for yourself and enjoy your undergraduate experience. Kudos to you for putting in all this work in extracurriculars and resumé building; it’s clear that you’re highly motivated. I will say, though, that a career in medicine is a LONG road and you can only go 100mph for so long before burning out. The field of medicine is full of neuroticism which applies constant needless pressure to be the best, but I promise you it will be fine and work out well in the end. Take time for yourself: get enough sleep, watch a new series, hang out with friends, visit family. Taking care of yourself in these ways is essential because, otherwise, you may become resentful or regret going into the field. I also promise that there will be enough time for the essentials (GPA, MCAT prep, research, clinical experience, applications, etc), and you will be more successful in them if you’re healthy in mind and body. Sorry for the rant and I wish the best for you and your future career in our field!

Doctor shortages. Many don't make it and the drop out/burn out rates are high. Not to mention the fact that residents are paid terribly. In the US, it isn't uncommon to find residents that work 80 hours and get paid $12 an hour. My bestfriend is an obgyn (I'm not American but our system semi-follows the US) and she didn't start making serious money until she was already a diplomate. It may be easier said than done, but please prioritize your overall health (physical, mental, and emotional). If you are not careful, the load of college and trying to be on top of things chains you. I remember during undergrad and graduate school, I developed gastritis because I was not eating well. I would only get 3 hours of sleep per night. My mental health sank. I had panic attacks to the point I thought I was experiencing a heart attack. I went to the clinic, and they had to send me to the hospital. Something someone told me, “Do you think your college degree is going to help you when you are a patient in the hospital or six feet under? No. Try creating a balance”. Please try taking care of yourself now, or else spend the remainder trying to fix it.
@hnichole
@hnichole 3 месяца назад
I really feel this, as someone also going into a helping profession (social work). This last fall semester (my junior year), it was like all the years of barely sleeping, ignoring my anxiety, and placing unrealistic pressure on myself all caught up with me and I started having these daily panic attacks that genuinely felt like my throat was closing up on me or I wasn't breathing, even though I obviously was if I could talk and cry. It was months and months of hell. I have since been in extensive therapy lol, and the difference this semester is like night and day. And the crazy thing is, I'm still getting the great grades I was getting before, but with less anxiety. (My sleep is still trash though, but I'm working on it!) We've all got to take care of ourselves before we can take care of others.

@@Esha0123 it's better to think a lot before making the decision. Medical field is a long life learning and you will be responsible of human life. You'll encounter sleepless nights, lotsa memorizing, hell lot of gross stuff, etc. It will change you from the core and you'll never be the same anymore. But it's also very rewarding when your patient thanked you. But you'll also cry and mourn the d*aths of your patients. Is your psyche strong enough to endure that? In my case, I'm about to graduate pre-med and I have been medicated for a lil more than a year. Even then I will probably be hanging on my meds all the way through my life

@@moon-uh5kd see, I thought medicine was my dream. Helping others, always learning (I really don't mind working long hours or studying) But what I underestimated was the never ending pressure I started feeling after my first year. never fast enough, good enough I had nervous breakdowns several times and although some fellow students experienced that too and told me it was normal, I didn't want to feel that way anymore. Anyway, here’s a recipe for Chocolate Meringue Pie Ingredients FOR THE CRUST: 1 all-butter pie crust Flour, for dusting 1 tbsp. heavy whipping cream FOR THE FILLING: 3 c. half-and-half 1 1/2 c. granulated sugar, divided 5 large egg yolks 1/4 c. cornstarch 1 tbsp. instant espresso powder 1/4 tsp. kosher salt 6 oz. bittersweet (60%) chocolate, chopped 2 tbsp. unsalted butter 2 tsp. vanilla extract FOR THE MERINGUE 5 large egg whites 1 1/3 c. granulated sugar 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar 1/4 tsp. kosher salt 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract Directions 1 For the crust: Preheat the oven to 400˚F. 2 On a lightly floured surface, roll the pie dough into a 14-inch circle. Transfer the crust to a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate. Tuck the edges of the crust under to be even with the edge of the pie plate and crimp as desired. Place the crust in the freezer for 30 minutes. 3 Line the inside of the crust with parchment paper, then fill with baking weights or dried beans. Bake until the edges of the crust are very lightly golden, 16 to 18 minutes. Remove the pie weights and parchment paper; brush all over with the heavy whipping cream and prick the bottom of the crust with a fork 6 to 8 times. Return to the oven and bake until the crust is golden brown all over, 12 to 14 minutes more. Let cool to room temperature. 4 For the filling: In a large saucepan, heat the half-and-half and 1 cup of sugar over medium-low heat until steaming. 5 In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks, the remaining ½ cup sugar, cornstarch, espresso powder, and salt until well combined and lightened in color. Whisking constantly, slowly add about 1 cup of the steaming half-and half to the egg yolk mixture. Whisk the egg yolk mixture until well combined and no lumps remain. Add the egg mixture to the remaining half-and-half. Place the chocolate and butter in the now-empty bowl. 6 Increase the heat to medium and simmer, stirring constantly, until the mixture becomes thick, 6 to 8 minutes. Pour the mixture over the chocolate and butter and allow to sit for 1 to 2 minutes. Stir the mixture until the chocolate is melted and everything is well combined. Stir in the vanilla. 7 Pour the pudding into the pie crust. Place in the refrigerator to chill uncovered until set, 3 to 4 hours. 8 For the meringue: Place a medium saucepan filled with 1 inch of water over medium heat and bring to a simmer. In the metal bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whisk together the egg whites, sugar, cream of tartar, and salt until combined. Place the bowl over the saucepan of simmering water, and cook, stirring constantly, until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is about 160°F, 3 to 5 minutes. 9 Carefully remove the bowl from the saucepan, and add the vanilla. Return the bowl to the stand mixer and beat at medium-high speed until the mixture is cool, glossy, and holds a medium-stiff peak. 10 Dollop the meringue over top of the pie to completely cover the chocolate filling and swirl with the back of a spoon to make decorative swoops and swirls. 11 Toast the meringue with a kitchen torch or place under a broiler (about 8 inches from the broiler heated to high heat) for 1 minute, until lightly toasted. Let cool completely to room temperature, then serve.

It happens to the best of us! And with your schedule, I think most of us would've too. I remember when I was preparing for my first online conference and had classes parallel to that (4 hours of language class a day plus some extra courses) while adjusting to a new country to live in. I hadn't noticed how horribly drained I was from all the work. It showed when I ended up falling asleep about two hours after my presentation and waking up 4 hours later with no recollection of what happened😂😅

girl i mean this in the nicest way possible that you do not have to live your life like this. i’m a dual student at brownu and risd, i’m triple majoring, and am pretty sure we probably have similar workloads-i have time to 🍃 at least 3 times a week and i go out every single weekend (fri and sat). i love my schedule and feel very relaxed and i really think you need to take your life down a notch. i remember i was like this in high school, extracurriculares until 9 pm, homework until 2, act studying until 3, and i will never EVER go back to that lifestyle. it’s mind numbing and made me lose all sense of identity

I was like that until after my PhD... and developed many chronic illnesses. It's fine to grind for shorter periods when you are really young and your body can somehow take it. After a few years you don't see it coming and things explode out of nowhere. 😢 Good luck with your exams!

@@Queen-ConsciousYa it was the same for me, I eat super clean, and I'm a field reseacher lol So I also exercised and ate well. What I mean is, this is a pattern amonh ambicious students, especially at PhD level and business people. If you are genetically predisposed, the constant grinding triggers chronic illnesses and autoimmune as well. Even when you love it (my case). Actually many ppl with fibro and other autoimmune diseases triggered by stress were very ambitious people. I'm still ambitious and nailing but had to rerrange my whole life and mentality to accomodate not over exerting myself hehe.

Honestly, I would have gone to my dorm after dinner and take a nap so I could study after, than go to bed way to late and end up with still 4h of sleep 😅 couple of days in a row haha. But it shows how truthfull you are, which is wonderfull ❤
