Yummm! You could totally make homemade baby food with those honeynut squash too! Freeze them in cubes for when little one is ready! 😊 Those dahlias!!! Stunners!
Looks delicious. We grew honeynut squash for the first time this summer. OMG so good. With two plants we harvested 16. We didn't have any issues with squash bugs. We had so much rain and that is the reason I'm thinking our honeynut did so well. One squash is enough for hubby and I to enjoy with dinner.
That's awesome! They are so good aren't they?! 16 is a great harvest!! I am very jealous that you don't have squash bugs, they so bad here where we live. The plants die pretty much as soon as the squash bugs discover them. We don't spray anything on our plants, so I just have to deal with them unfortunately. We did end up with a lot of leftovers, I made a few too many, but thankfully we like leftovers :) -Cara
Make string bean soup with beef bones, & sour cream. The best soup! I made it for my sis in Yreka California. She had a 1/2 acre garden. After my soup (actually Slovak Grandma's recipe) Deb ripped out & planted 5 rows of beans. It's that good. Just a food for thought. Love & prayers. I made a roasted chicken recipie by Emeril Lagasse by mixing the herbs with soften butter under the skin on to the meat. It was delicious as the meat had heavily absorbed the flavors in it. Becky from Acre Homestead has an organic home made pesticide she makes up then sprays on. You might check with her for the simple formula to control the squash bugs. I think it was her mother’s recipe.
“BAM” that sounds like a wonderful way to roast chicken! (sorry as a fellow fan I couldn’t help but use Emerald’s catch phrase haha) I will look into her squash bug recipe! Thanks for sharing 😊- Cara
I do not have a specific video on that. I will try to describe it the best I can for you though. After I harvested the garlic I peeled each individual clove and then I used a food processor to rough chop the garlic. Then using silicone sheets in the dehydrator I layer an even layer of garlic on each tray. Then I dehydrated it at 125 degrees F for about 2 days. The length just depends on how wet your garlic is and the humidity. I do it until it is completely dry. Then I ran it in my high powered blender to make the powder. 👍 I hope that helps 🙂
I love classical piano music! That is one skill I wish I was better at. I love to play the piano, but it does not come naturally to me. My grandmother on the other hand was a very gifted pianist. ❤️-Cara
I allso save jars ,i have lots of small ,from when i cleaned and de cluttered my spice jars , Then next up were mint ect ,coffe jars u get some lovely jars I remember when we were kids ,we drank from them , Mum saved the cups for visitors
I need to plant those honey nut squash. You need to plant squash in different areas. The squash beetles go into the ground for the winter. Plant tomatoes where the squash was.
I had no idea about planting the squash in different areas. The area where we planted the honey nut squash this year never had squash growing there before, unfortunately the squash bugs still found a way. Even though they kill the plant quickly I will still grow these again next year :) -Cara
Your garden is gorgeous Cara! I love seeing the clip from above at the start of this video. Do you have videos about the sizes of your raised beds and the design?
Here is a video of us making some of the raised beds. : Making New Raised Beds | Prepping the Garden for Spring ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A8lrMn4Exv4.html
I have developed a process probably out of laziness LOL. Using my thumbnail when I pick my beans I snap off that stem end as I'm harvesting them. Sav-a-step later on
Good news harvest lovers. I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word (Jesus) and believes Him who sent Me (God) has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. John 5:24 Jesus died for you, all you have to do is believe & repent.
Don't be afraid to cut up garlic and freeze it. That is something I learned last year (I'm almost 66) It is a great thing to have on hand if you don't want to take the time to skin garlic for your recipe. Nothing better to do on a cold winter snowy night....clean a bunch of garlic. Also...when you dry your garlic all of the greens need to be completely dried. Sometimes it takes me a month in zone 4. Then cut the roots off. Use one bulb to clean the dirt off of the next and repeat. When you cut the dried greens off of your garlic leave 4-5 inches of the stalk! You will have garlic until your next harvest comes in. The key is to not allow air to get into the bulb. Also don't remove any skins unless they are very dirty. Just brush them off with your previously cleaned bulb. Hope this helps.
Those are some great tips thanks for sharing! We ended up dehydrating 90% off our garlic this year and turning it into garlic powder. Last year we harvested garlic at just the right time so it stored all year long, but this year I harvested all of my garlic too late. I had a pretty good (and cute) reason though ;) 😊-Cara
Becky @acrehomestead preserves garlic with oil in little pucks in the freezer for cooking or salad dressings or marinades. It’s a wonderful idea. I put mine in little silicone ice cube trays and just pop them into a ziplock when they’re frozen :)
I am excited for a combo harvest & cooking video! I just watched your last harvest video and was thinking I’d love to see what you do with all that abundance! 😊
Hi Cara l love your channel, seeing harvesting and cooking make me want to do it also. I am about to creat my own garden soon do l can have the abundance of harvesting as well❤❤❤
Sorry....I'm a new subscriber...I have Zinnia's and some of them look like your Dahlia's. I did order Dahlia's two years ago and saved seeds from what I thought were my Zinnia's. Now I am thinking that I have both Dahlia's and Zinnia's. Thanks!
Don't apologize! 😊 Welcome! I am so glad you have joined our channel. Dahlias and Zinnias are two of my favorite flowers, that is wonderful that you have both! That reminds me I need to save some seed myself for next year's garden 😊-Cara
Omg, you are the 1st person I've seen stuff a bird exactly as I do. Your bird looks like a turkey! How much did it weigh? Aren't roasting hens this way the best.
Oh nice! Roasting whole chicken is a favorite of ours for sure! Our chickens we raise for meat average 6-8lbs. Some are smaller some are bigger. I think that one was around 7lbs. -Cara
Beautiful introduction music playing! You could have that one on in the background throughout your vid! Nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ and Eucharistic Minister
I was wondering if you had chickens in the melon video that was covered with squash bugs. Have you considered letting the chickens range the garden to do away with pests?
I ready enjoyed your video And I know what you mean about being able to just go out Into your own garden Grocery store to get your dinner I do It myself and I love It
Wow Dhalias are my favourite flowers as well can you show a video on how you tc of your sage plant and if you grow potatoes an sweet potatoes can u show us how u harvest them your garden is amazing thank you ❤
@@bluebirdhomestead apparently I was pronouncing it wrong LOL and someone who gardens locally corrected me it's pronounced say-shell. Seychelles are tropical islands. I look them up and I seriously doubt they'd be planting pole beans there. Funny how they come up with these names.
Hi Cara, I have watched a few of your videos, and I am really pleased to see how these Honeynut Squash have turned out, because I have them to grow next year. I also roast my winter squashes too, so it made for an all round great video to watch 😁
Hi Cara! The chicken looked delicious! I am going to try the honey nut squash next year. I do tend to avoid the butternut as much as I like the flavor, because of how hard the rind is. With my arthritis I need foods that are easy to prepare. The dahlias are beautiful there on the window sill. 💖💖💖
Hi Meg! Thank you! I am sorry your arthritis has been painful. You could try roasting it whole then pealing and scooping the seeds out afterwards. I’d probably poke it with a knife a few times first though. 😊
Here in Australia the Butternuts are called pumpkins and are beautifully roasted with a lavish sprinkle of powdered parmesan cheese during the last 20 or so minutes of cooking, they are delicious. I will have to try them with the brown sugar too. I have never seen the Honey Nut variety either. Will have to have a look for them here. While I am new to watching your videos I will be coming back at every opportunity to see what you guys are doing in and around your homestead. It is hard to believe that you and your husband have been on the farm for several years, I think you guys must carry your age well, I thought you were a young girl at first. Dinner looks delicious and my type of home cooked meal.
I love learning new information! Thank you for sharing what butternut squashes are called there in Australia, that is so fascinating. 😊 Roasted with parmesan cheese sounds delicious!!! I am defiantly going to be making that tonight for dinner. We have only been on this property for a few years, but we have accomplished a lot. Ryan is a very hard worker, I am thankful he is around ;) 😊-Cara
Cut up a apple and put that into the cavity of your chicken as well. The moisture from the apples helps to keep the meat moist and removes the stronger acidity taste from the dark meat. Everyone asks for the herbs I used or method of cooking as its always moist and none of the sometime unpleasant taste of the dark. We all fight for the dark meat but some don't like it, like my mother. Ill put apples into all my Turkeys as well. It really makes a difference in turkey.
Your dinner looked amazing. Honeynut is my favorite. I cut mine in half. Season with wild flower honey, butter and salt. Sage and thyme I love using together.
