It's the end of the season...which means it's time to pull most of our veg and get it ready for the root cellar. Todays video will cover harvesting, sorting, and storage. We've had great luck with this method! Today were harvesting, rutabaga, beets, and carrots. Lots of work to do, lets get to it!
We previously did a video on storing carrots in the cellar. Here it is:

Our original rutabaga crop had clubroot. Check out the video here:

Dave, I don’t have ready access to coarse sawdust, but have LOTS of dry very fine planer shavings. I would have to moisten them a bit, but do you see any reason they might not work same as sawdust? Also, when you store beets and carrots, how close into the flesh do you cut off the tops? I’ve seen where some folks cut beet tops and roots then store in bone dry peat moss. I’ve previously stored carrots in damp sand with tops just twisted off, but they do tend to sprout! My cold room stays at 5°C

Yes I have used planer shavings. I recommend softwood for sure, the resins tend to resist fungal decay of the wood. WHen I top my carrots, I cut about 1/2" above the crown. The veg does sprout early on as my cellar cools down, and it starts sprouting again as the cellar warms up. As long as the temp is low, growth is slow. If my veg sprounts I know I have done a good job of keeping the roots alive! I just depend on nature to slow down the sprouting as temps in the cellar decrease.

Can't remember if you said it in your video or not, but do you store your carrots the same way as you store your rutabaga and beet
