Harvesting Free 18650 Li-Ion Cells From Laptop Batteries

In this video I am salvaging some free 18650 Lithium-Ion cells from old laptop battery packs. Sometimes you get a pack with almost new cells, sometimes the cells are partly worn, sometimes there's one or few totally dead cells and the other ones are good, like new. The cells are often discharged to nearly 0V and this leads to a damage that causes a high self discharge rate, but usually you can recover them by making several charge - discharge cycles or by trickle-charging. Warning: Li-Ion cells may explode, catch fire or cause burns!

The strange square component is a controllable fuse. It can blow in three ways: the current through it gets too high, the mosfets underneath (or near) it get too hot, or the third terminal is connected to ground by the control circuitry.

Yup, harvesting batteries from laptop battery pack is quite fun. It's like finding a treasure for free. As fun as harvesting the components from the broken electronic. People said it has broken, i said that things is just waiting for being opened.

That was a relatively easy laptop pack to open! I've had quite a few laptop battery packs which have been a right pig to open. It's also good that none of them are the Panasonic CGR18650D. I always call them "CGR18650 Detonating" because they always try and detonate themselve whenever I take apart a battery pack with these cells! FYI: I had 2 battery packs with these cells and they both tried short circuiting on me, destroying some of the cells.

You can use the included BMS of those batteries, they might seem difficult to use but they usually have 2 pins for each pole, so 2pins are + and 2 pins are - and then the middle ones tend to be I2C connections to give details to the computer... if you hook up a constant current PSU to the inputs and limit it to the right voltage they will charge and balance!

I don't like those obscure chips, especially when hooked to an EEPROM memory :). And I only needed individual cells, not a 14.8V pack.

0:58 And find a LOT of good LEDs in a bad led light bulb Mostly surface-mount LEDs but sometimes even through-hole LEDs And I don't know why the manufacturers put the LEDs in series because if one LED fails then the whole light bulb fails. Example: 12 watt LED light bulb has 12 LEDs 1 watt each. One LED fails and the whole light bulb fails. Even though you still have 11 LEDs okay in the light bulb. So that's why I do it this way Sometimes I take some light bulbs home, dissemble the LED light bulbs, look out for good LEDs with a multimeter on continuity mode, then desolder them from the PCB board and use them in my projects. I love salvaging LEDs! You don't have to buy them online! Btw I know that bad light bulbs may contain hazardous chemicals but I don't care because I dissect the LED light bulbs outside. Batteries: recycle Other stuff: reuse, then recycle

I just received an Opus BT-C3100 V2.2 from AliExpress that I paid about $30 for including shipping. It's going to let me test 4 batteries at once. It's easy to use and I've already started testing batteries. It's faster if you charge the batteries first in another charger and then test them.

I'm wondering how you determine the cell-capacity so "exactly" ..do you use a constant-current discharger and measuring time until you reach the voltage-minimum (which is how high, btw?)? ..thanks
@oniruddhoalam2039
@oniruddhoalam2039 4 года назад
He made a battery analyser which discharges the battery by drawing a constant current. The microcontroller in it adjusts the voltage applied to the gate of a MOSFET and also calculates the value of the capacity by multiplying the current with the time.
@TheSpotify95
@TheSpotify95 3 года назад
Constant current discharge from 4.2V to 3.0V for Lithium Ion. Set the current to whatever value you need for your application and size of battery (usually 0.2A - 0.5A for smaller batteries, 1A for larger batteries). DGW uses 0.5A for 18650s but I do a more thorough test at 1A, because any battery that works at 1A will work at 0.5A, but really old batteries may work at 0.5A, but not at 1.0A.

I replaced my entire laptop last month :). I didn't open the battery of the old one yet. It was running on AC all the time and the battery now lasts 1 minute. After 10 years, the battery is totally rotten. You don't even have to use it. Just keeping the battery at 100% all the time is enough to ruin it. Maybe just 1 cell is bad, but more likely all of them are. I will probably open the battery in another video.

You can use the board for battery protection
@TheSpotify95
@TheSpotify95 3 года назад
The laptop's PCB is not usually very good for using as a charge controller/protection PCB. They're only good if you need a 3S or 4S configuration (depending on the battery pack), plus they all have different pinouts, and some won't allow you to charge or discharge them at all unless you hook up the relevant data communication pins (probably some form of I2C interface). It's better to just salvage the cells, test the cells, then buy a cheap protection PCB from eBay (make sure to balance the cells first).

Why does the 5 cycle count save the battery?
@lenaroseguera1241
@lenaroseguera1241 7 лет назад
how do you do the cycle for lithium batteries?
@chelarestelar
@chelarestelar 5 лет назад
Each cycle is a full charge and then discharge. Doesn't matter the order or if each time you charge/dicharge partially. For example, you have a battery at 100% and discharge to 70%, then charge to 80% and then discharge to 50%. If you add all the discharges and charges, you charged 30% and discharged 50% so not a full cycle.

Hi, this is a very dangerous procedure that nobody should follow. When a lithium ion battery reaches a voltage of below 2.5 Volts, it develops small conductive particles called dendrites, which are generally formed by the peeling off of the copper electrodes present inside the lithium ion battery. When you try to charge the overdischarged lithium ion battery (i.e. the battery with a voltage below 2.5 Volts, it causes the copper dendrite pieces to melt and get plated back on the non conductive parts of the lithium ion battery, which will cause an internal short circuit. This procedure is very dangerous and the battery can explode or catch fire during the charging process. Even the use of the 0v function on most of the expensive lithium ion battery chargers, is also very dangerous. I was using the 0v function on my Xtar VC2 charger to revive my overdischarged 18650 batteries and the batteries ended up smoking and almost catching fire.
@pavelbires
@pavelbires 5 лет назад
Your comment is right. But, i have salvaged about 3 laptop batteries, one had 6 batteries, (18650) and one of them had very high self-discharge current. They were discharged to about 0.8v each. They all survived (except that one) and I charged them with $1 charger (he did teardown of it). No heat, but i need to make capacity tester (just 500mA CC load) and to test them. I guess you got very unlicky, or i got lucky...

@TheSpotify95

Most batteries are probably fine even if they reach a low voltage. I have had some cells with a relatively low voltage come up with a decent capacity when fully charged and tested. In fact, some of the lower voltage cells gave a higher capacity than the ones at a decent storage voltage - probably because the PCB shut off the pack and stopped the battery from charging. I've never had an 18650 battery catch fire, or even show any signs of internal damage such as what you explain. However, some 18650s can be bad in that they have a very high internal impedance, and/or get hot whilst charging. These batteries should not be used, and should be recycled.
