Love it. I learned about raising fresh water shrimp at NKU in the 1990s. If I remember correctly, some shrimp farmers feed the used grain from whiskey distilleries. I was told the shrimp have a hint of whiskey taste.

Never take for granted how blessed you are to have access to land, friends/help, and machinery. I wish to live the homestead life. We bought 50 wooded acres, and a year and a half later, a car accident changed my future. We wished to live debt free, and it saddens me how expensive equipment is. I can't work like I used to, so I need machinery. You are very blessed with the trinity of land, friends, and machinery!

As far as culture goes the fw shrimp are slower growing, have a much small larger head to tail ratio and do not have the amino acid profile and iodine tase of saltwater shrimp. They also cannot be grown at the densities of saltwater shrimp.

Fish/crab/crawfish and shrimp eggs can stick to birds feet(herons, gulls, geese, ducks etc.) and be transported to other waters. Eggs can also pass through geese/ducks digestive tract unphazed.
@RiverBloodfishing
@RiverBloodfishing 2 года назад
With these shrimp the can only breed and lay eggs in salt water, they won’t fertilize or hatch in fresh water, so we buy them as babies and raise them for 5 months to harvest, but yes you are correct the birds and herons transport aquatic creatures and invasive species and parasites to other bodies of water

If I'm not mistaken this is seasonal, right? Have you ever considered building facilities for indoor farming or it something just not possible?
@RiverBloodfishing

It is seasonal, we only do it once a year as a fun hobby, but an indoor facility would be ideal for year round production
@philboeing1889
@philboeing1889 2 года назад
I replied to that on this post. It was researched in the US 40 yeas ago. When salt water shrimp farming became feasible it took over. Slot of people have small production tanks for saltwater shrimp. Not really commercial.

Just seen a documentary of Thailand Shrimp farming It is all bad!! To many chemicals all the water is toxic! All because they have to many shrimp/prawns in the ponds! So how is that working for you guys~? I plan on getting into that kind of thing in Wisconsin using tanks/raceways, no ponds.. So I will not have to worry about all the potential bad that can happen!

@RiverBloodfishing
@RiverBloodfishing 2 года назад
@@25raise the 2 main types of farmed shrimp are tiger prawns and pacific white shrimp, I would suggest the tiger prawns (penaeus monodon) because they are easier to raise in fresh water systems no salt needed, and you can grow them as big or small as you want, I would also get a bigger tank and filter system if I were to do it at home, the shrimp need space and territory of there own to thrive, but you can put vertical nets in the tank and they will climb up and live on the net you can see these nets in my shrimp videos
