Harvesting Lentils From Our Home Garden

We devoted 100 square feet of bed space to our lentil trial this year. In that space, we seeded about 1500 lentil plants giving us an average spacing of 15 plants per square foot. This density seemed to provide good ground cover without causing too much competition between plants. Beds were irrigated with the same drip irrigation system we use for all of our vegetable garden beds.
What was our total yield? When the threshing was all wrapped up we had 3.56kg or 7.83 lbs of lentils. There was some loss from a few mistakes in the drying and threshing process this time around, so I’m confident we can beat those numbers next season. For now, it’s just nice to have a benchmark to use for our production estimates going forward.
If you’re curious how these harvest numbers compare to large scale agriculture, average yield for large green lentils in our province is 1546 lbs/acre. Our yield from this 100 square foot test plot equates to 3412 lbs/acre.
Lentils are obviously not the crop to grow in your garden if you want the highest economic return. We’re getting into grain and pulse crops now because we’re already growing all of our own vegetables and these threshing challenges keep things interesting. We also want to eat grains and pulses but there are no sustainable sources in our area from which we can buy these products.
If you have experience growing lentils by hand, please leave a comment and let us know how it went.

I like it!. We use 5 gallon pails and baseball bats to separate legumes from their pods, I know this sounds rather violent but its really quite gentle and effective, we just let the legumes dry on the plant then stuff them into the pails to about 75% full and just start gently tamping with the bat, in about 5-10 minutes the legumes are at the bottom of the pail and the plant matter/pods are on the top, this works very well and is quick.
@LightLadd
@LightLadd 5 месяцев назад
@@ML-ks2lj Nice idea, I can get my hands on plenty of broken clothing dryers (usually the heating element goes) from kijiji for free, and maybe the use of baseballs or tennis balls in there to gently tumble and remove the pods. With the increasing cost of food I'm definately growing alot more and I think a little bit of mechanization could certainly help. Thanks for the input, Cheers.

@@thehutch7728 Can’t post a pic and mine is just a winnowing device but basically one Y connection has one hole of the Y pointing up, this is where you load it. The other end of that Y points upwards diagonally. A straight piece of pipe attaches to the other Y connection one pointing diagonally downwards and the other pointing straight downwards. You blow the air in the diagonally downwards hole and load material into the top and the heavier material falls through the bottom Y and the chaff flys out of the top hole. I have various lengths of straight pipe to swap out to help adjust to whatever I’m using it for, sometimes a length of straight pipe is needed for the top and air intake connections. Read the description and I'm shocked by the yield numbers compared to commercial farms! This shows that the key to modern agriculture is more, smaller farms with mixed products. It's better for the soil and the food produced is more nutritious too! Massive mono-crop farms using petroleum-based fertilizer is killing the environment and turning our fruits/vegetables into empty calories. We have to find a better system, and I'm glad you're doing things differently 👍
@fastertove
@fastertove 9 месяцев назад
Is mono-crop even a common in the western world? It definitely isn't where I live in the EU, but I guess it can be more common in harsh climates and places like the US with more lenient rules. It is common knowledge and practice here to shift between 7-11 different crops. It is done in different intervals to optimize depending on the vitamins in the soil. Doesn't matter if it is conventional or organic.

@fastertove
@fastertove 9 месяцев назад
Monocropping specifically refers to the same crop year after year, why I was a little puzzled... Okay, so what you are arguing for is smaller fields with several different crops at the same time. That is perfectly fine if it the food can still be mass produced efficiently. Definitely great for plant diversity and insects in general. Petroleum-based fertilizer is primarily bad if used too much (e.g. leaks to lakes and ground water) and because it is unsustainable. The food likely won't be as densely packed by vitamins, etc., but is by no means bad for consumption. It is a balancing act. I agree that fertilizing should be kept to a reasonable minimum and as 'natural' as reasonable possible, but enough to optimize the land dedicated to farming crops. @@verteup

Makes you appreciate the food more when shelling by hand though.. during the pandemic when stores closed I was thankful to have already been growing lentils that sustained me thru hard times.

My mum made lentil soup today (salt, cumin, onion, garlic, chopped tomatoes and water). It was really yummy but then I added finely chopped cilantro and it was out of this world.

Running a hand through legumes always looks so satisfying. I did wonder about the harvesting efficiency when I discovered that they had so few seeds per pod.

Harvesting beans and running my hands though them is so satisfying indeed. I like holding some in my hand for some reason and just feeling them. beans are much more efficient though no threshing needed

This reminds me of rice and wheat harvesting. To extract rice, they have threshing devices. One looks like a comb (because it is). You take a Handfull of stalks, and hold them at the base of the stems. You lay it into the comb (which is anchored to the floor) and pull. It cleans the stalks of leaves and pods, leaving you with clean fiber and a pile of what you want mixed with leafy debris. It is essentially the first step in a thrashing machine. There are a lot of old technology that might be neat to showcase for homesteaders that cannot use solar.

No idea who needs to hear this or if anyone is interested lol. But here in Egypt we use rice and lentil chaff to grill fish. Mullet and tilapia are thoroughly coated in chaff mixed with spices then grilled on coals until they're pitch black (The chaff, not the fish) and the result is amazing. Maybe you should try it with the chaff you collect?
