First a fella that I help chop, a big time farmer chopped oats with a 30 ft head, standing oats, and now you. Back in the day we always windrowed our oats first. I like watching combining standing grains, always intrigued me.
That's interesting. I've harvested oats all my life - always standing oats. Other than on videos, I never saw it windrowed. I love combining corn best of all, but also like any kind of combining. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Yes, the radiator fix was a big success and I was relieved in doing this oats, because it was the first time I used the combine since the repair. Looking forward to harvesting corn and soybeans in the Fall. Thanks for your continued support of this channel, Jan.
We should begin oats and barley Monday August 29. I cut and windrow with a old-time swather and then combine with a JD 4400. Like you, we’re a couple of weeks behind due to late planting. Great video!

thanks for another interesting video charlie, I'm not too familiar with oats, here in Southern Illinois it's all about corn and soybeans with a little bit of Milo and wheat here and there.
I do have a market for oats here. Horse customers buy it and horses eat it "as is". People around here also grind it into feed with corn and some soybeans for cattle feed or "chop" as we call it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

The motor had been rebuilt and only had about 200 hours on it when I got it. It runs well and does a nice job for me. Really cleans corn well and is the right size for my operation. I don't need a big combine. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Well that’s a little unfortunate about the oats but I guess as they say that’s farming is great to see you out in your combine I love that series of combine reminds me of when I was a kid on my uncles farm do you bail Do you bail the stocks for some purpose as it looks like you’re leaving them in a row
Yes. I don't cut the oats down to the ground with the combine, as i don't see a need to run all that chaff through it. But I will now go back with a mower and mow the oats stubble, rake it, and bale it for straw. I have a local hardware store that buys all my straw for me at a good price. Yes, I do think the weather was a factor in the foxtail. I sprayed my oats as I always do, but that is generally early. For someone reason, foxtail seems to do better when it's drier out. We've gotten rain occasionally, with dry spells in between. Last year, I had no foxtail at all. Hard to figure. Thanks for watching and commenting, my friend. Glad you en joyed the ride. The 4400 was running nice and smooth. And the oat straw will be nice to bale. Are you old fashion and let the straw get a shower on it to get some of the wax off or do you bale the Shiney straw? I started farming I bought a 4400 diesel and a 4 row head and a 915 flex head and ran it for 4 years and then I had to go with a larger machine to handle more acreage. But the 4400 is and was a great combine
I generally wait a little while to mow the oats stubble and then bale the straw. Never considered the "waxy" idea before - I just learned something. So, generally I bale it as soon as I can get some nice weather for it. Thanks for being here Matthew.
Thanks for the ride in the 4400, good to hear that it was staying cool. Is there a reason why you don't use the flex head? Planting oats late usually yields less, not much a person can do when the weather doesn't cooperate. Thanks for sharing.
I had the rigid head first, with the combine back in 2016 and didn't have a flex head until 2 years ago when I started planting soybeans. So, since I don't cut it down to the ground, I just use the rigid head, since I have it. Saves wear on the flex head which I definitely need for beans. I have always mowed my oats stubble for straw. Hate to run all that chaff through the combine when I can just run the heads through. Just a personal preference. Thanks for your comments. Glad you enjoyed the ride.

@@gleanerk Well, I seeded down clover and timothy under the oats. Clover is already coming up and will be able to be baled next year. Timothy there the years after that.
Well it's too bad the oats wasn't as good. Mine made enough for some seed. My pickup head is the same type of head as yours minus the sickle and reel. We used to have one for beans with a Love Bar flexible cutting bar. It worked but wasn't as good as an actual flex head. You had to be careful not to catch the fingers in the sickle. What do you spray your oats with? I've never done anything for weeds in oats other than cutting it.
I use Rhomene, which is a form of 2,4-D. I usually spray when it's about 6-8 inches tall, because there is a limit on how big it can be and still be sprayed. I had no broadleaves, except for the clover I planted underneath it, but Rhomene has no residual affect on foxtail. Last year I had no foxtail in the oats - this year, it was loaded. Wondering if it was weather related. Thanks for supporting the channel.
