Can we run our low-power electronics indefinitely from solar power? Thanks to www.PCBWay.com/?from=atomic for "powering" the channel over the last couple of years.
I've had my low-power ePaper display up and running for a while - it needs to be recharged every couple of months. But I got to thinking: "Can I run it off solar power?"
After my experiments with solar-powered Christmas lights, I wasn't convinced, but I reckon with a bit of energy scavenging it might actually be possible!
You can pick up the two power scavenging boards from here: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_Dmx... and here: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_Dkz... (affiliate links).

I do find those sound effects a bit loud and also unpleasant when using headphones. Please make those quieter or don’t use them at all. From the technical side: I really like the idea and might use it in future. In the end you do not need to charge the cell to 4.2 Volts of this is easier. Or you might just use a LiFePo4 cell with its lower voltage.

I had some pretty good luck with just a 6V solar module, lifepo4 cell, a shottky diode, and a solid-state high-side switch-- The mcu monitors cell voltage, and when it goes below 2.7V it turns on trickle charging, and when it goes above 3V the trickle charging is turned back off. The MCU was asleep most of the time. The cell is kept away from full charge to improve cycle life of battery.

You could add a button that forces an update, so if you do need to see the weather when it's in sleep mode you can.

Cheers for sharing your approach, ideas and results making self charging devices! Personally appreciate the details. Sound effects seem bit loud. What do I know, am no good at balancing audio.

I'll tone the sound down a bit next time. Thanks for watching, appreciate it.

maybe a small VAWT with a directional funnel would be a good supplementary boost, can make them quite small and hidden too

The YX8018 IC (joule thief), used in lawn lights may be a better solution. These are cheap, and easy to find on Ali. I have made a circuit that attempts to keep charge on a lithium battery that drains to a low power blue LED at night. Another idea: More durable (and less dangerous) NiCads may have a less internal bleed.

Good idea, I've been meaning to play with the YX8018 for a while.

What if you put 3 panels in series and use a buck regulator like the MP1584 to charge the battery? I have to use NiMH for my outdoor projects because Canadian winters will destroy a Li-ion cell. I think putting 5 or more 100uF Tantalum capacitors in parallel close to the ESP32, would be able to deal with the power spikes.

Great video. But deep sleep 6 hours after 11pm ends at 5am not 6am as the graphic shows.

Just checked out Andreas Spiess youtube video #278 Energy Harvesting for Makers make 3 years ago, it still seems extremely relevant. Given the cost of these devices, and likely energy return from them I don't think I'll go down this route.

Unless you live in an area where the weather is highly volatile, you need only update every thirty minutes to an hour.

Bigger solar panel more power to charge battery?

Yeah, bigger and more efficient. These are really cheap Amazon cells.

More cells or move down south. Since mid Feb I've been charging up my 9.6kWh battery most days. 😂 now how long could I run that display for? 😂😂
@atomic14
@atomic14 Год назад
Yeah, definitely hard to argue for solar up north - though it is pretty popular. More and bigger cells is the answer.

@@atomic14 look on the bright side, if you had more sun you might have a lot more midges. 🙂 You could biomass the midges to get electricity, now that would be a great idea.

For the life of me, I don't understand why everything is not running on solar? We have the biggest fusion reactor up in the sky and we are just beginning to use it! 1 KW per square meter is nothing to sneeze at.

Yes, renewables and building houses properly so they are insulated and don't need so much heating would go a long way to helping.

Perhaps add wind? e.g. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dM18fHIiMcs.html
