It Is Finally Time To Harvest Your Garlic. After 9 months or more of building (and bulbing!) up, the wait is over at last and Garlic harvest time is upon us! As a low-maintenance crop, the journey hasn’t taken a lot of effort, but we have played our part.
At planting, we ensured the proper time of year, depth, spacing, as well as soil type and of course lots of mulch. As spring rolled in, we were on deck again with fertilizing, watering, weeding, and for hardneck varieties, scape removal.
In this video, I’ll recap all of that good stuff, but the main focus here is the harvest. We’ll go over when to harvest, what to look for, how to dig up the bulbs, as well as drying, curing, and storing the heads of Garlic for long term storage.
It’s a biggie and we cover a lot. But Garlic is an important crop for many of us, so its best to get it right. The video does focus mostly on hardneck Garlic harvesting, but the same rules apply for softneck varieties as well, other than the scape removal. Garlic is Garlic after all. Enjoy!

Im in New Zealand so just harvested 50 bulbs of Creole hard neck. First time I've grown a hard neck variety. Its been a very wet first month of summer so the bulbs were a little wet when harvested but had to get them up. The commercial grower I bought the seed cloves from said to bundle in tens and dry for a month upside down. However I hung them individually bulb side down on my clothes drying rack. As they were a little damp, this maximised air flow around each bulb. I have 50 more bulbs of Keeper and 50 bulbs of Fire soft necks yet to harvest. All of these were planted in May. Its now getting less wet so I can reduce watering of the soft necks and I will plait them in tens to dry once harvested.

We learnt so much this year about growing garlic with tomatoes. I will also plant later than Nov as in London we haven't had snow, like we have been having mild winters for years now. I might also freeze the bulbs for 6 weeks or so before planting.

Enjoying these garlic videos.. Despite my Italian upbringing and amazing memories my grandfathers urban vegetable garden I’ve only just started to have a go at growing edible plants.. herbs, garlic and chillies I’m in Perth, west Australia so got my garlic started off a little late at the end of autumn rather than the start but they’re growing (only planted 5) and I’ll be happy to at least harvest something I’m guessing around January (mid summer) it gets pretty hot here in summer so we will see.. but you can’t learn anything if you don’t have a go.. Looking forward to building some proper raised beds in the backyard when the weather starts to warm up for next years gardening endeavours

I'm happy to see you grew garlic in fabric buckets. I'm no longer able to work the ground I have to plant a thousand and more cloves, but I've been hesitant to try planting in buckets when our mid-Maryland (zone 6) winters can see temperatures well below 10 F. I can get fat, purple tinged garlic bulbs for a dollar each from a supermarket (the gods know where the store gets them). So, I think I'll plant 4 buckets of supermarket garlic this fall and see how the winter shakes out. Thanks for the inspiration. I've missed homegrown garlic these last 7 years.

I thought I would come to RU-vid to see if it was time to harvest my garlic since a tornado hit our town this weekend and pretty much wiped out my crop, bending all of them over. Since you said that some people bend the stocks over, I’m hoping that just leaving them where they are, and letting the dirt dry out for a few days that I will be able to successfully get some bulbs out of the crop. I tried propping up the plants with more soil, but they just keep lying over because they were probably whipped around like a blender.

Good video. You covered everything well but just one comment. You say to hang the garlic upside down to cure but I believe you meant to say hang them bulb-side down as you show in the video. I understand the idea is to let the nutrients gravitate to the bulb.

I usually do three years on, one year off now. But I've had spots where it's 8, 9 years in a row no problem..... But it never hurts to rotate either.

Thanks Jassette! Yes, still mulch, although maybe just an inch or so. Use softneck varieties and plant in either the fall or the spring.

I collect chicken and fish bones and egg shells in Wal-Mart bag in the freezer and grind them in wood chipper machine and pour them around plants. Wild animals try to eat them even when I mix them with dirt.

@100GTAGUY
@100GTAGUY Год назад
Try boiling them first until the collagen breaks down and any excess meat flakes off easily, then baking them on a sheet for a while all prior to grinding, I think most people recommend about 300°F for making bone meal or hot and long enough you can kinda crack them by hand. Boiling and removing the meat should also help remove most of the scent attracting the animals, but they can still sniff out minerals especially if they're deficient in them or are suffering from osteophagy. The heat also breaks down molecules which in turn makes it easier for your plants and soil microbiome further break them down and uptake as nutrients.

I noticed that your garlic doesn't have an coms on them. MIne have them growing on the sides and root ends. I grow elephant garlic. Is there a secret to the garlic not growing coms? Excellent video. I use blood meal but never added the nitrogen plant food. What kind of ground cover are you using to keep the weeds and grass away?

I’m thinking you’re just going to have to go for it, it’s never as nice or good for long term storage if the bulbs start to split open Just take longer to cure and make sure they have lots of ventilation, and room for air to move around the bulbs

You mention that garlic only needs a feeding 2x after dormancy, but my soil conditions may not be the exact as yours so is there a indication that the garlic may need to be fed more than the 2x. Thank you
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 2 года назад
Possibly....but I've even grown them in poor soil, like in 5 inches of soil in herb planters....and STILL only fertilized twice. You can feed them more times, but in my opinion, you'll likely just be wasting fertilizer/$$.

I might have missed it, but if you want to use some of your cloves for planting next year, do you use the cured ones, or set aside some before curing? Thanks!
@TheRipeTomatoFarms

Cured ones. Though it doesn't make much difference. Cured just means the paper coating has been dried on the outside for long term storage.

Can you grow garlic indoors?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 2 года назад
Not really. Garlic needs a winter dormancy and chilling period to bulb up. You COULD simulate that by refrigerating the cloves first before planting.....but there's far larger return-on-investment plants out there.

Maybe try growing soft neck garlic? It doesn’t need a cold cycle, and you just plant it in the spring with all your other stuff. You can also just plant hard neck garlic in the spring and probably harvest it later since it’s not -20°C there in the beginning of November down there.
