I love the way you show the harvest. Its what we look for. Anymore the seasoned you tubers dont show harvesting just the results thank you the best video
Great video Laura! I have been growing potatoes for about 4 years now and it's awesome. I always keep some from my prior harvest for the following year. You just have to store them in a cool dark place. I find a brown bag in the fridge works best.
Thanks Rob! I kept a few from my harvest. I actually left them out on a paper bag. They're sprouting already and a bit soft. I just stuck them in the fridge. Think they'll be okay to plant even if they're soft?
You can also use Organic potatoes from your store. I had to do that last year since we had lost power for like 30 hours and the seed potatoes in the fridge went bad.
Congratulations on the harvest. I plant potatoes in February and then they need frost protection some years more than others where I live. Then after that harvest, it is time for sweet potatoes!
Thank you! Oh wow, luckily it was very mild so no need for frost protection this year for me. Sweet potatoes sound great! Hopefully I can grow those one day.
So Laura, just a heads up here. FYI the green is not a problem. Use your potato peeler and peel the green side. Keep peeling into the potato flesh until there is no more green. The rest of the potato is exactly like the rest of your potatoes. Hope this helps. Wade
@@SouthernLaura And thank you Laura, for replying. There are so many RU-vidrs that don't respond. Makes me think they are only there for the money. I enjoyed your presentation and am sure you will do well.
@Wade Brinson 😆 Yes I think you may be right on that. I enjoy and appreciate every comment. It's neat to see what others have to say. I can learn alot from people all over the world.
It’s completely normal to cut up your seed potatoes. Many recommend it. Those tiny ones are worthless. The small ones are good for stews. Just toss them in whole. Seed potatoes should come from larger potatoes.
Hello Aqua Marine. 😊 I wasn't sure if I could save the tiny green ones for seed but they just shriveled up and rotted. I should have just ate them. I still have a few larger potatoes left so I'll save those ones for seed instead. Thank you for your helpful input.
Hi Ed! Thank you for watching! My raised bed I used for the Yukon gold potatoes measures 2 ft wide by 6 ft long. It is 12 inches tall. At planting I used raised bed mix. I didn't use any additional fertilizer. I tried to water regularly when there was no rain. That's it. No secrets or tips. Very simple. It was my first time growing potatoes. 😊 I planted around 8 to 10 potatoes. Some I cut in half and some left whole. After cutting I planted immediately. I didn't dry the cut potatoes. Hope that helps. Any more questions please let me know.
Hi I'm growing rooster red potatoes got from morrisons in December planted end of April popping up every were keep covered up hoping for a big return shocked at how meny is popping up so soon
I am close to harvesting my potatoes so this was great to see what I can expect from mine. I too haven't grown potatoes at home before so it is interesting to see how they do. Did you water often and fertilise the soil with something.
When I planted the potatoes I mixed in all purpose vegetable fertilizer. I watered weekly or sooner if the plants looked thirsty. It's so satisfying to grow and harvest your own potatoes. Happy harvesting! 😊
I planted 22 containers of potatoes this year gave 6 away to family and 2 of my neighbors. so I have 16 containers for me. I will be able to harvest 6 containers by the middle of July and I have more taters to plant cannot wait to dig them up. I am going to can most of mine but gonna be eating some too. nice harvest.
Hi Jenny! Thank you for watching! That is so kind of you to share with family and neighbors. Harvesting potatoes is so fun. I didn't grow too many so I've been eating them fresh. Next time I'll try to grow extra to can also. I hope you get a huge harvest!
@@SouthernLaura thank you this is my 4th year of growing in containers. last year I didn't get too many but I also only had about 11 containers too so I am hoping to get quite a bit because I used fertilizer and topped it with straw we will see. but any I get will be a blessing.
@@jennyhackenberg3790 What variety do you like to grow? This was my first time growing and all the nursery had left was Yukon Gold. They did good for me so I'll grow them again.
@@SouthernLaura Yukon gold, Pontiac reds and kennebec. I have Yukon gold and Pontiac reds planted right now and I will be replanting the containers with kennebec.
Thank you for watching Harry! Yes you are right. My son just got me a tripod a few days ago so I'm hoping that will help make better videos and easier harvests. 😊
I do 2 plantings of potatoes. 1 in the spring and succession sow in June for a fall harvest. as long as you have the time in your season plant multiple crops!
