One of the best Meme-able games I've ever seen, the Cataphract line formation was like mass Hussars, the secret pass was Thermopylae, and the trampling of entire armies was the charge of the Rohirrim ! Awesome !

I wonder if spear + hand cannoneer would really counter mass cataphracts - even a half decent player with minor micro would send the cataphracts to charge through the spearmen into the back line of HC and destroy them. That AoE dmg + their survivability would be really interesting to see. Spear+HC's definitely slaughter mass knights but the cata's charge might be the difference. Guess it'd be an eco race to see who could sustain the constant re-maxing of their army. I bet the spear+HC would win in the long run but it'd be a slog for sure.

Aussie, when you go mass cav with Bzy you have to always go Hippodrome. The ability you get from it is what makes has Cav with the Byz possible since they don't get a charge attack. You also have to go Cistern landmark also for the healing flask. If you go Merc then go the other two landmarks

38:54 It's not that the observation tower is in the way. It's a kind of bug of the Byzantines and apparently it hasn't been fixed yet. Sometimes bombards can't pass through the gates or peasants won't get wood.

6:40 Not sure if you were mistaken or just misspoke, but the Grand Winery doesn't give an accelerated gather rate, just extra olive oil. Still useful if you're planning on selling the oil to get to castle, but kinda weird choice given you were planning on massing cav.

As a Byzantine main, not using the Olive oil for mercenaries and instead selling it for gold never occurred to me. This makes late game so much better when you run short on gold.

Drongo playing my strategy I use since byz release in ffas just does it all 50x faster. Even full map house spam! Only scout mixed in for extra torch damage missing. Gotta love it!

Every time I watch these I really want to play FFA, but on the other hand, I'm also really sh!t lol Never really actually played against anyone other than AI at least since AoE2 when we'd "hack" the school computers in the 90s & early 2000s then install AoE1,2 & WC3 or AoM on the school system to play against each other.

SPEARMEN + HANDCANNONEER DO NOT COUNTER CATAPHRACTS! PERIOD! I tested it multiple times, because I love 4-8 player matches and lategame parties. Cataphracts are too op in lategame!

when you play for Byzantine 450 population it feels like the faction is revealing its full potential. Although it probably all depends on the skill
