Julia Hartley Brewer speaks to editor of Spiked Online Brendan O'Neill about JK Rowling's recent tweets on trans issues and asks if Rowling is guilty of "entering into the victim Olympics" by justifying her statement of facts by saying, 'but I'm a victim too'.
Brendan told Julia that he thought it was a "defensive measure" on JK Rowling's part because "I think she feels so completely under attack". He went on to add that women should have the right to speak freely on this issue "whatever their background, whatever their experiences".
Mr O'Neill thinks JK Rowling goes out of her way to say that she respects trans people but expresses concern about an "extreme wing of trans activism", which he says thinks women's spaces should be completely thrown open to people who are biological males. Brendan argues "transphobia I think it's a nonsense word."
