Hellooooo ladies and gentlemen, i'm Mostwanted2kay and today i talk about why in my opinion Runescape 3 is losing players and is on its way to hit its all time lowest since its release, while OSRS is thriving and is about to set a new record.
This video is not an attack to the community, i just discuss and give my opinion.
So what is your opinion? Is Runescape 3 dying? Can Runescape 3 reach the levels of success Old School Runescape has achieved?

just like the name of the game i guess. You start out with osrs. then you go to rs3. just preference i guess. I think people will just switch back and forth between the games. I play osrs for awhile before i switch to rs3. I probably switch back to osrs again and back and forth i guess. osrs is more manual and adrenaline than rs3 i think. just think of it like sport car with manual control transmission and automatic transmission regular car.

The problem with rs3 as a maxed player/pvmer, the combat system is the best part going for it, but unfortunately with the way the jmods are so detached and unaware of what their players want. It is clear that after egwd there wont be any piece of pvm content for maybe 2 years and i think me and many of my friends quit because there is no more content or difficult bosses to do, think of hardmode vorago or hell mode in lost ark or different raid difficulties in ffxiv... there is nothing like that anymore its just enrage system with zammy and glacor but thats just a repetition of the same fight i guess so i didnt feel much motivation to do it, a big part of that is all bosses are pushed to being soloable, it is a MMO not a solo adventure game that it feels like nowadays ( glacor is solo only, all of egwd is reasonably soloable except for croesus). Sorry for the rant i dont even know why i bothered...feels like jagex will just ignore and push for meaningless content and ignore the great depth in the combat system

Rs3 died when they released EOC and trade limits way back in the day. EOC made me quit an account with several pre-skillcape 99’s, and I never went back.
@MurdocMack

The reason I switch between the two is because I am still extremely bitter of what happened in 2011-2012 with EOC. It makes me furious playing rs3 knowing I had no say back then. Which is why I play osrs occasionally, then while im playing osrs I think about the 7000 hours and my 16 year old original account and don't want to start all over again so I go back to rs3. Its a vicious cycle.

The competition has nothing to do with it.

I think the only thing that is harming or “killing” RuneScape 3, is RuneScape 3 itself. The big reason that RS3 has lost many of its players over the years is due to the nature of Jagex changing the game’s identity in the pursuit of newer / greater relevancy within the genre. You said it yourself: RuneScape 3 has to compete with other MMOs. They’ve gradually overhauled and redesigned it to accommodate elements of other games in the space that have become what is deemed the “standard” or the “expectations” for a current-day MMORPG. Stuff like an ability-bar-based combat system, prevalent sources of free / bonus experience that allow one to fast-track their way to the endgame, a focus on endgame content being the “real” game, a in-game cash shop with cosmetic purchases, pay-to-win microtransactions, and now a (possibly discontinued) battle pass. RuneScape 3 strayed away from its roots - the things that made it what it was - and became something that was meant to appeal to a wider audience. But in doing so, they created the exact opposite effect of what they had originally intended: the game’s playerbase split in half and led to a _decline_ in RuneScape’s popularity. Now that the old playerbase has largely left, and isn’t planning to come back, they’re at a point that they _have_ to attract new players in order to keep the game going, which has resulted in further changes and additions that are beginning to chase away even the people who had initially stuck around. Jagex is simply digging themselves into a bigger and bigger hole over time, and it’s becoming increasingly more challenging for them to climb their way out of it. This is where Old School RuneScape has been able to thrive and grow over time. Unlike the original game, OSRS adheres very strictly to its original design philosophy and offers the players the right to dictate the direction it goes. The playerbase for Old School is primarily those who were unhappy with the changes made to what became RS3, and so the new version had continued to remain what it was before, because that’s what the people who play it want, and what they want is what they get. There’s a discussion to be made about how community polled updates may not always lead to good outcomes, but that’s another topic. The point is: Old School RuneScape is the game that the players want it to be, not the game that Jagex wishes it to be. And that’s why it is able to retain fans, why so many people come back this game over playing other MMOs. When RuneScape was first created, it was at a time before the MMO genre had a “blueprint” for developers to follow. Rather than following in the steps of what came before, RuneScape was made to be whatever the original creators came up with. It offered something that other games didn’t do or weren’t trying to be at the time, and now Old School RuneScape benefits from that fact. The game doesn’t _have_ to compete with other MMOs, because it spent years developing a core audience of fans and crafted a niche for itself within the bigger picture. Old School RuneScape doesn’t get beaten out by the competition and die off because it offers an experience that isn’t like other MMOs. If you want the experience that RuneScape - the original game that it was and is - has to offer, the only choice you have *is* RuneScape. That’s why there are so many more “RS3 Player Tries OSRS”, and vice-versa, videos, and far less videos in the realm of “OSRS Player Tries WOW” or FF14. RuneScape 3 has to compete with all other MMOs, because it wants to _be_ like all other MMOs. Old School RuneScape only has to compete with RuneScape 3, because it is the only game that provides a similar experience. That is why one has seen a huge struggle with keeping players while the other hasn’t. And to be clear, I don’t meant this to be a jab at RS3, either. I am an Old School player at heart, but I’ve played and find enjoyment in both games - I think both are excellent, and I don’t do this whole taking sides thing that a lot of other people do. This is just my observations and what I feel is the objective truth of the matter. I feel that RS3’s decline has nothing to do with the existence of OSRS, and has everything to do with how it, itself, has transformed throughout the years.
@grandcanyon2
@grandcanyon2 6 месяцев назад
rs3 is not gonna compete with the other games because its shity crappy version, why play rs3 when i can play world of warcraft or ever quest or one of those other popular games. The reason runescape classics and osrs was so popular was because no other game was like it. A ex- runescape co founder adam gower is making a new mmorp called Brighter Shores which is basically a cheap copy of runescape 2/osrs but with little better graphics and better lighting, it will fail because folks rather play osrs then play a cheap copy. Its one reason all these so called world of warcraft killers and clones have all failed or died.

What pulls me away from RS3 is how complex the combat system is. You have your standard kit of abilities, but then there's a lot more that you have to unlock through minigames, quests, and other stuff. Now you have to think about what skill is best to use in x situation or you need x skill to efficiently kill x boss or x slayer monsters. While OSRS isn't like that, you get whatever gear you need and you're good to go.

RS3 trumped OSRS for me, I was not really a fan of restarting my character so that pushed me away (I have a classic account). RS3 combat is far more in-depth and just a lot of fun to learn and has quite a nice skill cap to play. Bosses are a lot more fun, music for me sounds better, and i just enjoy the look of it a lot more. Invention perks allow for further customization of your character and the build you have going. The newer quest that has come out has been amazing with great stories, atmosphere, and music to go with them. As for micro-transaction it's there, I'm not going to defend it but will say for those who can't commit to the long grind it works to get them into the higher levels but you are kind of ruining the experience of leveling your character. The cosmetic stuff is fun and I personally don't mind it. Overall RS3 just feels like the better game for me.

I think the reason is the slow roll out of updates, since osrs has such low graphics its easy to push out new monsters and items but rs3 has to have alot of artists to make new areas and creatures. OSRS is bottlenecked by polls. Some changes just need to be made without polling them. RS3 was able to be more creative with updates because the community had no say. Some updates were great, some were terrible. The MTX definitely ruined the game for many people. People from my clan started leaving once Squeal of Fortune was introduced, and there was a mass exodus after EoC. OSRS is not pay-to-win or pay-to-progress. It's a better funding model.

I'm 50/50 on the state of rs3, half of me agrees that the executives played a huge roll in ruining the game by force feeding MTX and EoC. Then the other half of me says the community just kind of dealt with it, which is why they were able to continue pushing more and more MTX into the game over time. Although Jagex will have made the final blow, the community could have all voted with their wallets and refused to accept the updates, but they didn't. The reason why OSRS is blowing rs3 out of the water is because the community will absolutely vote with their wallets if any nonsense gets added that doesn't have a place in the game.

when eoc came out literally 62 of the player base left following the next 4 months. Mini games where deserted people began panic selling items to ge, bandos godswords became like 1.5 mil.2 months later they had a poll for osrs. If there was no osrs the game would be DEAD. The runescape community could have done the same thing with runescape classics, but they didn't instead jagex hid the runescape classics log in page all the way at the bottom and showed no ads for runescape classics. The no trade and wilderness was bad with about 25 percent of the player base gone but nothing was in comparison to when eoc was introduces and like 62 percent of the player base left.

In terms of skilling, qol and quests rs3 is way supperior(even tho the economy sucks), like its not even close, but runelite and the simplicity of osrs and its community makes it a desiarable game(especially for people 35+). Both games are great in their own rights and Id prob even play osrs again, but I am someone who is annoyed by bots and osrs beeing around 50% bots makes me not really want to play it again, and these are not exegerated numbers its really give or take 50% prob even on the higher side.

OSRS is definitely way more popular than RS3. However, I disagree that RS3 is anything close to dead. It's a massive game with not enough players to fill all of its content, so it seems pretty empty. If you manage to make your way to mid-late game (Priff, curses, seren spells) you'll find a pretty strong and welcoming community that is strongly centered around high level PVM. The ~20k-22k players that RS3 has online are pretty dedicated. The major problem for RS3, besides microtransactions, is how difficult it is for new players to get into the game. They make it way too complex. It's come a long way since the original EoC update, and has grown into its own skin. But they need to take notes from RU-vidrs like Protoxx, who have made great suggestions about how to improve the UI, and make the game more intuitive for new and returning players alike. Otherwise, you have to find out which grinds are meaningful first. Repetitive skill grinds are just not as important to the RS3 community. Some of these accounts DID get 99s when it was hard, while others never even knew what it was like to chase 99s. So the culture of skill grinding is way different. Max capes are still max capes, but 99 cb stats are usually not impressive anymore. Boss enrage pushes, finishing certain tasks (i.e. professor title at arch guild), and Completionist (trimmed) is always going to be impressive. Level 120 is always celebrated. The economy has been hit hard by inflation though, so mentally when you approach the game it might seem ridiculous that things can be that expensive. As a returning player it's arguably worse, because you might've remembered the game when 10m was a lot but now it doesn't go very far. On the bright side, most of the primary money makers scale to the inflation (and might even be responsible for it).

The real problem is majority of rs players are old. Majority of people playing the game grew up playing old school therefore it makes sense for them to prefer it. RS3 is suffering for 2 simple reasons: 1) Jagex can't get new gens to play the game. 2) Old gens can't learn new tricks so they stick to old school. This is like interviewing a bunch of people that grew up during the 80's and asking if they prefer 80's music or today's music. Which one do you think they'll prefer? Exactly, you are not about to see 50-60 year olds rapping or whatever kids listen to nowadays. They are going to stick to what they know and claim it is the best. So, on one side you have old gen unable to adapt thinking old school is the greatest and on the other you have the new game that simply fails to pull new gens.

Unable to adapt? I watched my favorite game turn into WoW with EOC. I watched my favorite game sell out with squeal of fortune. I saw the removal of the wilderness and free trade. I never wanted to play wow, I never wanted a hotbar combat system, and I never had a choice. I played because of PvP and they took away the one thing that made the grinds worth it. A lot of veteran players aren't incapable of playing RS3, it's just not Runescape as we know it.

RS3 suffers from bloat. There is too much low effort content, and most of the MMO features are dead content, with the exception of the grand exchange. Its biggest strength was the quests, which are incredible. OSRS missed out on the years of great quests from 2008-2012. However, they are filling out the story in OSRS by remaking quests from RS3 with a divergent storyline that is more in line with the tone of RS2. And with raids and DT2 bosses, the combat in OSRS is as interesting and engaging as RS3.

Osrs is nostalgia when you haven’t played it in a long time, but osrs isn’t really osrs it’s more like new school, The devs decided to update it to modern standards so players would stay because plain basic osrs would get boring fast. I feel like if you maxed 3 accounts already the nostalgia would have died off half way on your first account. If you want nostalgia play f2p and turn off plugins and shit and turn up the music, or even play an rsps.

All the people comming from OSRS claiming "oh RS3 is so easy and pay to win" have clearly not spent enough time in the game to understand why proteans and dummies you get for free is literally not a big deal because RS3 has 28 (soon 29) skills compared to just 23 in OSRS. Also keep in mind there are 6 skills that naturally extend to level 120 already which means 120 is the max level of that skill, no longer is it 99. In the end you might say "oh but maxing is basicly for free and pretty gifted in RS3". Well what if i told you that nowaddays maxing in RS3 is considered basicly the "tutorial of Runescape"? Many people in RS3 actually consider maxing a mere milestone at the very beginning of their journey rather than treating it as the very endgame which it is in OSRS currently. Also if you dislike all that free daily mtx you get gifted you can just destroy it and never use it despite beeing on a main account or if you are really SO SO botehred about it then just play ironman mode. I think it is a stupid reason to play ironman because of that tho. Just treat the daily mtx as a daily login reward. Many MMOs listed in the video (GW2, WoW etc.) have daily login rewards or even monthly login rewards. Just treat them as such in RS3 aswell and don't let your weird anti MTX mindset get in the way. It really is no different than daily login rewards from other games....

Definitely not, I agree. However, it’s a spit in the face to their original fanbase who spent months and months grinding for these rather impressive milestones, especially back then. Imagine being a huge fan of a game, then suddenly one day they just completely rework everything that made the game unique. Then on top of that, little Timmy just paid $100 dollars to get to where you’re at from non-stop grinding for 6 months. I mean everything is so hyper-inflated just from micro-transaction and gold purchases. OSRS even has a major botting and gold selling issue, yet their economy is so much better than RS3, think about that. They even raised the iconic cap of level 99 to truly be at lvl 120. Correct me if I am wrong, but that is 9x the exp of acquiring 99. An unfathomable amount of grinding before RS3, but now it’s not that big of a deal with a bit of money. Completely gutting the game of a healthy player base and destroying the trust of so many of their extremely loyal players.

What all your other MMOs you mentioned do not have (and trust me i played a few of them, like Guild Wars 2 for over 3000 hours too), which ultimately dragged me back to RS3 was the skilling and leveling. Also click to walk is something completely different and it is kind of beautiful in it's own way because nobody else has it. A major reason why i never properly got into OSRS was because i started the game back in 09 and i just love the RS2 graphics SO MUCH over the 07 graphics. Jagex refused to allow HD clients in the early stages of OSRS to "prevent botting" but to be honest they were just beeing outpgorammed by a kid in their basement vs a full on game dev team that could not manage a proper HD client themselfes whilst doing regular content updates. So that is why i just quit RS in 2012 with eoc and came back 2015 rather than jumping into OSRS. Don't get me wrong i did try OSRS but goddamn the graphics were literally burning my eyes, i could not take it. So when i came back in 2015 (after spending a ton of time in Guildwars 2) i felt refreshed and kinda ready to give RS3 and eoc another chance since i already put so much time into my lovely char. So i got to learn eoc eventually after using legacy combat for almost 1 year and figuring out it was insanely inefficient xD Then in 2016 / 17 i learnt to use revolution and finally i was fully adapted into eoc. Fast forward to 2023 and i am on my way to 5,6b total xp and my goals are comp -> trim comp and to go further beyond that. These kinds of crazy goals is something that OSRS could also never offer. To sum it up why i prefer RS3 Overall better and smoother graphics. Bigger game world and more content (because more skills and many skills go to 120) More quests and thus also quests and qol rewards. Deeper combat system, OSRS combat can only get this difficult before you cannot make it any harder besides adding more damage to enemies which means oneshotting you if you miss just 1 pray flick.... RS3 simply has higher end game goals like Trim Comp, Golden Reaper, FInal Boss and Insane Final Boss, Golden Slayer Master and many other crazy titles and log completions.

I love your idea. It be awesome to have a version of rs3 with no micro transactions and a complete overhaul to the progression system to make it more runescapey. I think big issues with rs3 are pay to win literally everywhere. Very difficult game mechanics especially with eoc ability bars that are not explained at all about how best to use them there's literally no tutorial that explains how to do it. The interface is customisable but again no explanation on how. Even as a seasoned rs3 player (ironman only) I somehow don't always get how it works and you can't find out how to figure out what part of the interface is missing. You can lock the screen but if you minimise the screen a tiny bit it breaks all of the boxes ... The combat is reasonably good for the most part but many end game bosses are basically impossible unless you have knowledge skills friends etc you spent an hour getting to the boss to get 1 shot by a mechanic no way of learning how to get better i.e. scaling mechanics - slightly addressed by some bosses but even still for the most part if you look at say solak, BM /yaka, telos, even nex you can get pretty messed up. There's a lot of information lots of skills and knowledge requirements for "meta" whereas osrs is pretty basic grinding. There's some great features don't get me wrong osrs has some difficult content too with prayer flicking madness and weird woox walking, specific tile /pathing bosses like say raids or nightmare which I find pretty tedious and seemingly crazy hard content to naturally learn - like when the boss was created did they honestly expect someone to have to do this crazy method to just kill the boss. Essentially in rs3 only say the top 1% are good enough to to the top bosses. Not going to lie I don't even want to solo Raksha when duo is far more comfortable and same with ambi etc

I'm personally leaning towards rs3 from my experience because their is more content to say the least.. the skills are more compatible as they work together, The new skill necromancy is being released the end of this month, there's more skills and quests overall. the graphics are better, less bots, the evolution fighting is beyond more skillfully inclined versus slash,stab,and block lol, the list goes on in my opinion... but that's just me lol

They are not looking for prayer ticking/flicking. They like the mechanics the bosses bring in RS3. The challenge and reward system behind bosses. Skilling is much more interactive in RS3, although some skills are still being worked still to make them more interactive. Also please don't ever compare OSRS active member numbers to RS3's because RS3 don't have giant bot farms running on every world in the same numbers that OSRS does. Last time I checked it was said somewhere around 24% or more of OSRS active members were bots. Also there is a huge myth going on about the MXT in RS3. Like we are somehow forced to buy into it. Were not and the majority of the RS3 community don't even buy keys to get the skilling xp. Most of us love the cosmetics and that is about it. Sure we have a whale or two that buys keys to get 99's super fast, but this is not the majority doing this. I see so many misconceptions about RS3 and it's always OSRS content creators making videos saying RS3 is dying. It's not dying and is in fact very healthy. In rs3 when I do ed3 and kill a monster, even though its dead it gets in the way of me clicking the monster next to it way too often and its fuckin annoying. And I dont wanna play it on pc. I prefer gaming on mobile and osrs just does mobile a lot better. Unfortunately osrs is just too grindy for me even though its a better game. I dont feel like spending thousands upon thousands of hours of my life just to get to the fun content. So basically what Im getting at is fuck runescape and jajex in general. Theyre both shitty games.

Rs3 and osrs are different games and should be treated as such and ppl complaining about rs3 microtransactions as a reason they dont play must actually believe that there not little timmys on osrs spending 2k a week buying gold on osrs to buy max gear and stats while others grind away so i say to ppl stop being a sheep and following the herds and just enjoy each fking game for there content of which rs3 has 400times more of that as someone whos maxing on both games iv got nothing but collection log to go for in osrs... rs3 the list seems to really begin when maxed of completion things there are to do and try... Osrs need to start stop being so niche with updates and bring in op shit like the staff from Toa or they lose players too wether ppl like it or not there must be progression in power or whats the point 😂 plus osrs getting to the point they need a maxed guild and content because not everyone that maxed a main want to then go max a ironman as the solution 😂 just spread the content and more of it since osrs dev teams so LARGE AND MIGHTY Now this request shouldnt be such a issue😅

Idk as a new player rs3 is the better option you may still have to watch guides and read wikis for both but rs3 is less overwhelming than osrs again this is new player perspective I also have 3 kids and not alot of time too grind and got boosts from Amazon prime for rs3 lmfao

Yup. The more the two games become alike the worse it'll be for rs3, and eventually jagex since rs3 brings them tons of revenue. The more osrs becomes like rs3 the more rs3 players come to osrs. Not only do they abandon their game, but they divide the osrs community. I've been trying to say this for months but we have too many RS3 players on OSRS who deny it

OSRS didn't kill RS3. RS3 killed RS3.
