I agree. This discussion raised a couple of questions for me. Does Mr. Bolton have anything other than mistruths and spurious statistics to contribute to any debate and why are a couple of highly paid MPs moonlighting on GB News at a time that most MPs reserve for meeting their constituents? Re the BBC, it has, of course, been in breach of the impartiality clauses in its charter for many years and should, therefore, cease to be funded by the public. The greatest iniquity of all, and one of long standing, however, is that in order to watch ANY TV broadcast one has to pay the BBC. I don't have to pay Tesco to shop at Sainsbury's.

@davidmullen6011
@davidmullen6011 Год назад
You are right - if the BBC had to alter itself to fit a subscription model it would not be able to exist in its traditional and current form. By that I mean it wouldn't be able to indulge purely itself, and be a safehouse for the extreme left/progressive personalities that it embodies at the moment. It would have to evolve, change, and shape up to appeal to a broad mass audience. And that would be a death knell to a lot of the people who have become attached within the Corporation. I'm actually sad and town on the issue, as ideally what I would like to see is an independent 'John Birt' type of figure sent in there with a tough remit to eject the dead wood, dismantle the cult-type mentality that has taken hold in there by bringing in some genuinely contrasting voices and viewpoints, and completely rethink the television arms aims and strategies - a new television vision is badly needed for 2023/4 as what we have become stuck with is now a very staid and lethargic output that belongs 20-30 years ago. At a certain point in time the BBC1 output stopped moving forward, and became more inward looking and fixated on 'inclusivity & diversity' strategies over actual mass market entertainment and wide appeal... Something IS coming. The BBC can't keep ignoring the real world around it in favour of its own preferences. And after the Gary Lineker fiasco it likely has just triggered the start of its own final demise, in its current form.

Most businesses would love to circumnavigate market forces ie producing products/services for which customers are prepared to pay. The BBC produces the ideological crap that their execs & wealthy celebs endorse & even though only the 10-20% of limp liberal Guardian readers support this woke brainwashing, the cash rolls in from the entire population, regardless. Licence holders have the rare privilege of having to pay a fee to be indoctrinated into the authoritarian cult of wokeism - so "has the BBC had its day?" Perhaps I am not alone in thinking that the BBC was an invaluable resource for the country when in its heyday; but, those days are long gone. Because its name includes the word "British," I've always assumed that the BBC is a staunch supporter of all things British. When Brexit came into the picture, my perspective completely shifted. The BBC no longer promotes principles that are uniquely British; instead, they promote the European Union and everything that it stands for. This became very clear around the time of Brexit. Due to the fact that the BBC does not now support the nation that I love, I do not believe that I can continue to support the BBC. As a direct consequence of this, I have ceased making payments on my television licence.

@@carlgrainger2053 Yes, and it's utterly meaningless to simply say without context that one doesn't have a license. The BBC owns UKTV and runs UKTV Play by advertising (organised by Channel4). It also has BBC Studios, which is its commercial arm and sells programmes throughout the world. @ShanghaiRooster
@ShanghaiRooster Год назад
The old internal production divisions within The BBC were formed into BBC Studios in 2015, with the intent of making it a for-profit subsidiary by 2018. In response to fears that BBC Studios would be overly dominant in tv production, the BBC has put out much of its non-news programming to tender, so some shows are made by outside companies (ironically including ITV Studios). As for foreign activities, BBC Worldwide was merged into BBC Studios to bring together production and sales. By the terms of the Royal Charter, the BBC is not allowed to use licence fee payers money for activities outside the UK (news reporting obviously excepted), which is why BBC shows are either sold to foreign broadcasters, or, if a BBC Channel exists in a country, such as BBC America, it is funded by advertising. Whilst many people here just blandly say the BBC should be funded by ads here too, the question must be answered as to whether there is sufficient advertising revenues to go around should all the currently licence fee funded channels suddenly start showing ads. Would the quality of UK TV be improved if some of the small channels showing much better programming (eg, Talking Pictures) suddenly face a loss of advertisers. Indeed, could those channels survive if the BBC became a commercial channel. The licence fee obviously must go in the end, but it requires somewhat deeper thinking than is displayed on RU-vid comments (or indeed some videos) as to a replacement model.
