The last time Ryu won a major Street Fighter tournament, was Tokido in 2016 at South East Asia Majors in 2016 in Season 1 of SFV. Since then, Ryu has was on the decline for all of SFV's lifecycle. In Season 1 of SF6, Ending Walker qualified for Capcom Cup through the closed-bracket regional finals, but Ryu had not won an open bracket major with international competition since that 2016 date. Now, at Ultimate Fighting Arena (UFA) in Paris, France, the stage is set for the curse to be broken by a young, relatively unknown player, against competitors like Daigo, XiaoHai, Big Bird, NL, GO1, Amperor, Nephew, Noah the Prodigy, and more. This is that story.

There's a lot of Kusanagi's like there's regional variants of Pokemon. There's the French, the Mexican SF variant, the Mexican TEKKEN variant, the Japanese, the Jamaican and there's probably a lot more out there.

I thought out was a cut lly pretty exciting. It sort of had the same feeling of watching a bomb tick down. Everytime Xiaohai refused to guess differently, he invited his own defeat. The theirs loop meant it was always on him to do something different, amd he was obviously just too scared. I see it as a callout, basically saying to Xiaohai that he knows he's a coward and will keep talking the safe route of eating the throw instead of taking a risk to try and take the win.

I want to paraphrase something Broski said when discussing Akuma’s strength shortly after his launch, since I think it’s become applicable again: The main reason you see so much Shoto downplay is because Shoto main are as disloyal as they come; they subscribe to whichever Shoto they consider the strongest and none other, which often leads to them undermining the strength of the rest of the archetype. It’s why we had that whole debate regarding Akuma’s tournament viability and why Ken downplay is a rife now as it was last June

You can actually see the mental breakdown of Xiao Hai on the reset sets once Kusanagi was able to stop the bleeding by winning the 7th set. The twice blocked OD DPs and doubt in taking the throw at the final set shows the mental stress placed on players in SF6, even legendary players like Xiao Hai. Props to Kusanagi for maintaining his focus and patience even after suffering the reverse ocv from Xiao Hai. All in all, SF6 is amazing and prob the most chaotic but still fair SF so far.

Xiaohai has lost a bit of his drive after winning the tournament that really counted. it happened to MenarD as well. Also it doesnt help that SF6 is very snowbally game (just like SF III 3rd Strike), there are many blowouts & perfects because Drive Rush is all about stealing your foe's turns. In such an explosive game, every mistake counts tenfold. Thats why picking top characters is extremely important.

I saw MDZJimmy's breakdown; he said that Kusanagi was playing Ryu suboptimally and I don't mean drops but certain combos and option selects. His footsies and spacing were good enough to let him be so aggressive. I'm saying this not to throw water on the win (he used the correct strategy for success) but to add hype because it means Kusanagi's Ryu is only going to get better.

@@jayro792 you don't need to be the best to be able to look at the conversions/combo routes someone goes into off a hitconfirm and see that another one does more damage with same ressource usage for example

@@jayro792 For one he only plays Ryu, so of course he would know lmao, even i am more optimal than Kusanagi with Ryu when we talk about combos routes and conversions, but his neutral, decision making, reads, spacing, anti-airs were good enough to make him UFA champion.

@@land_njr11 This is the sauce that people don't realise exists. Some people have crazy reaction times, Input speeds etc. You can be optimal af with your character, never drop anything.. But if someone can just beat you with pure reactions and footsies they don't need all that fancy stuff. Punk is like the embodiment of that lol.

One thing i noticed about xiaohai is that he shines in terms of being calm among pressure there was so many moments where he was about to lose but brought it back by keepinf it calm while his opponents just got nervous, the experience really kicked in

The Noah vs. Daigo match was my favorite of the whole event. Blows my mind that Jammerz would still question his reactions after watching Daigo beat Noah and then Nephew back to back just a day before. Especially since Daigo was the only player on his team full of killers to get a single win in that match. I guess some people just can't shake their biases.

One of the things that makes Kusanagi's story great is also how competitive FGs are a family business for him: His dad was a SFIV competitor back in the day called Genki, who just so happens to be a Ryu main as well. He's the one that got his son into fighting games in the 1st place! After his victory, the very first person Kusanagi run to was his dad who's always supported him from the get go as what is the most wholesome moment of the decade in the FGC.

For real though, that last round was brilliant. Kusanagi smelled blood, spending 4 bars of drive to get an oppressive beginning and using a pure throw loop for the first time in the entire Grand Final. People don't give enough credit to the absolute aura you'd need to scare Xiaohai into not pressing buttons.

what the comments don't tell you is that editors put typos in on purpose. pewdie did it, markiplier did it, its basically the most open secret that you put typos in on purpose to bait people into the comments for video interactions. could be an honest mistake but a real one knows the trick and they'll use it when a video is brand new to get it on the algorithm.

Ryu is the only character that’s rated lower because top tiers have a similar but better kit. People think ryus strength is somehow dependent on how good akuma and Ken are.
