I looked him up and it turns out Matt Owens was the exec story editor for season 4-5 of AOS, WHICH WERE THE BEST WRITTEN SEASONS. I'm so happy their paths crossed because Jeff Warden is so so underrated. He was phenomenal in AOS, so the fact I keep hearing praise for his portrayal of Buggy in the live action makes me so happy. So glad to hear he did justice to the character for people like Hasan who don't really like the character all too much.

Owen's takes on some of these were utterly disconcerting - and, frankly, also a bit worrying LMAO. Hasan's takes were much more grounded and sounded based on a deeper understanding of the manga, subjective opinions and tastes aside. (sorry long post - sorry English is not my mother language) For MO not to get the importance of (quoting someone else) "Luffy enhancing all the other characters and being the perfect protagonist for the world around him", regardless of his backstory being 'too simple' or whatever, and that those things are EXACTLY what makes him a GREAT MC... IDK, sounds pretty off an interpretation of Luffy to me. Cause that’s exactly what makes him unique and more deep a MC than he seems. Case in point, he’s at the same time a homage to Toriyama’s Son Goku AND taken straight from the original Monkey King character of legend, in his being a mirror and a catalyst of the people around him. The child-god-messiah interpretation for him would not be too farfetched. He’s FREE from the start from any characterization as a classic shonen manga protagonist cause ODA himself established immediately that he was supposed to be nothing more, nothing less than a ‘silly character of a comedy manga’: everything that he does from that moment on in the story is BREAKING THE RULES, even those on which he is supposed to be based in the first place. He grows as a character but only in accepting loss, his mindset, maturity and essence remain unchanged (that’s because he’s doesn't need to?); the story is about him AND about the world, yet the world almost bends to his presence (which, BTW, is why I find silly to talk about uneven plot points or last minute retcons on Oda's part: he established from the start the perfect manga in which he could bend the rules of narration themselves - what's important is the FUNNY TALE, right?); Luffy is a commentary by itself and of himself, of the story and within the story. He is the GOD of the story, even *wink wink (and that’s what is important cause OP is A STORY ABOUT STORIES). I agree that he shouldn’t be in S, indeeed he should be in S+ lol. (SIDE NOTE: you don't need a tragic backstory to be a good character, that's kinda part of a red thread of OP: that your past is part of you, but doesn't define all you are, nor is it either a justification for your behaviour, or a chain that binds you. It’s what YOU DO NOW and what you WANT to do to that’s important, aka YOUR DREAMS.) Some sparse notes, focus on my personal favs: - Moria was but a mirror of what Luffy would be if he lost everyone he holds dear (to miss the tragedy of Moria is to be superficial at best). That’s what Oda does, he works a lot with comparisons and contrasts. C is a slander lol. - Usopp is S TIER, such a complex character! He goes toe to toe with Robin and Sanji in terms of complexity and development (here is another example were you should consider not just the backstory). Usopp doesn’t have a particularly tragic story arc, nor grandiose moments per se, compared to others, but the whole point of his character is to find his own self worth and believe in himself, even without having particularly flamboyant abilities - he writes his own adventures from scratch, the fact his backstory is not compelling enough does not take into account that it is SUPPOSED to be that way, he's the backwater guy who, like THE READER, wants to leave home but is too scared to do it… And come on, his fight with Luffy (which is still top5 best fights in all OP), and the whole of his scenes in Skypea, Water 7, Enies Lobby and Dressrosa are so packed with emotional moments and character development that him not being in S is ridiculous. - Also I feel for Hasan, THE DISRESPECT ON THE REVOLUTIONARIES OMG. I feel like MO was reasoning more on a narrative point of view rather than considering also the themes of the story, and the emotional baggage of the scenes these characters feature in - but IMO they’re on the same level of importance when considering a character. Case in point, Zoro has arguably the weakest character and motivation complexity, which matches his bluntness and straightforwardness as a character, but all his scenes where he reasserts his unwavering loyalty and his willpower to give his all, everyday, to achieve his purpose, all serve his character’s strength (here I kinda agree with his positioning in A, cause his arcs and situations tend to be redundant, but I feel that there’ll be some development with Sanji in the upcoming arc - if the hints at Sanji going full on heartless Germa come to be correct). -------- tl;dr - the tragicness of a character’s backtstory is not all they amount to.

I actually like the Big Mom amnesia trope. She was a ticking time bomb because obviously she's gonna get her memory back but it's only a matter of when. That created a lot of tension rather than having her show up and look for Luffy directly.

I don't get the Rebecca hate. Out of all the princess in OP, she's the only one that physically fights instead of whines!! She fights even though she doesn't have to! I don't know if it is a male/female perspective thing because I don't like the way she dresses but that is like the only thing male OP fans like her for. But does no one see her for how hard she worked in the collisieum to win Ace's fruit just so she can change the rule about humans living with toys! And the whole time she was fighting defensively knocking people out of the ring! I mean how strong would she be if she didn't care about hurting people who were trying to kill her? What about enduring the hate she gets from the crowd on top of that? And yet people hype Vivi instead. maybe because she is a nostalgia character that still has relevance and potentially the last strawhat, but I can't stand her! Sure, she showed Luffy how to humble himself to be a good leader once (but throughout the series Luffy has been learning to be a captain anyway with or without her) and sure, Vivi takes matters into her own hands and joined Baroque works, I give her that but I just can't stand her constant whining and crying over Alabasta. It was like every scene! she'd cried so much that I started to count. The strawhats were killing themselves fighting members of the baroque works while they act as decoys for Vivi to relay a message to Koza. We see them all in bloody viceral fights then it cuts to Vivi running, she trips and falls then cries. I hated that scene I'm sorry. I find her annoying. And the slapping Luffy in frustration was annoying too. I'm so glad Luffy does not discriminate and hits her back. 😂 Also, what about shirahoshi? I guess she gets equal hate as rebecca but what about Momo? Sure he stood up but he had big bro Luffy pushing him the whole way. What about Hiyori? Nobody hates her but compared to Rebecca, she chose not to fight because women are supposed to stand back and watch! Meanwhile Rebecca wants to fight for herself! Maybe guys don't care because it's not relateable to them but I find Rebecca to be a role model for girls to stand up for themselves and fight for what matters to them. More female characters should be like rebecca. Rebecca is closer to Bonney. They choose to fight and not let themselves be oppressed. Even Nami and Robin didn't fight for themselves and just played but the broken systems rules until Luffy fought for them! Rebecca deserves more respect.

Buggy was a character that I found annoying and didn't really care for but always felt he'd be much better in a live action. He'd be more entertaining because he and the weaker OP characters are more relateable to real life people than the overpowered characters.

Sanji > Zoro character wise. I agree zoro is stronger than sanji but sanji has been great even before WCI he has been clutch to so many arcs before it, that's why he is cooler than a character who is just strong. Zoro just have cool fights that's why he is a cool character but sanji has a weak side, smart side, funny, and even uncool (which i hate) sides and tbh sometimes too bored on watching zoro fights because it's always the same thing = sword fights.

I'm barely 5 minutes in, if Aokiji is A, so is Akainu, Aokiji might be more likeable and if you're current you know what's going on with him in One Piece, but Akainu is literally the one that not only dealt with Ace, but also had a very strong hand in dealing with the Whitebeard pirates as well as the formation of Punk Hazard which set in motion the beginning and interactions of the time skip to play out as it did for Luffy's crew, currently Fleet Admiral and caused Aokiji to leave the marines, yes he is higher up I hate Akainu, I hate his character design, but I also understand that as a villain he is probably one of the most important villains EVER in One Piece in terms of story progression
