Hey gang!
This time around, I decided to venture into the tiny world of Hasegawa's 1:35 scale Mechatro Wego. Boy, was I in for a treat!
First of all, the box comes with two Wegos and 2 sets of identical twin characters. Two boys and two girls. The Wegos themselves are a quick build... it might take an hour or two depending on how detailed you want to be during the clean up.
I have had this image of a dystopian diorama in my head for about a year since I built my first Ma.K kit. A story of love conquering all in the midst of death... a reminder that we're all humans and we're all in this together... and when I got this kit a couple of months ago, I was determined to see my vision come true.
I guess my skills as a builder are starting to catch up - though I'm not quite where I want to be yet - and I believe I am ready for this build.
Some people have complained that my videos don't show as much of the detail in the build process. Well... even though I'm not in the tutorial making business, I wanted to take this moment as my last video of 2020 to commemorate one year since I started building kits, and in a way, show you guys what I have learned in the process.
I got a "bits bowl" inspired by one of my favorite builders on Instagram, GIANT_MEGA_ROBOT (he also introduced me to the Wego! / giant_mega_robot ) with left over pieces from other kits, and I sat down and started to figure out how I could use some of these parts to make my Wego look more like a character fit for my envisioned diorama... and so I started adding bits and pieces... nothing too crazy... cutting and fitting and burning and measuring... one by one, he came together. Maybe one day I'll be as intricate as GMR, but for now, I think I'm pretty happy with the results I got.
I mixed some Mr. Hobby paints and got to painting! I also utilized the magnificent and world renowned GPAINT developed by my dude over at StudioG (as you know, I am an active part in the GSQUAD group of content creators!), and boy do I LOVE the smoothness and beautiful matte finish that it provides! I will definitely be using it 100% on my next build so you can see more of it!
My weathering is simple... yet methodic, and boy is it easy to over do! You can keep going adding more and more layers of grime, rust and oil until your hands fall off... but at some point you need to decide that enough is enough.
I like to start with washes... some light, some dark... the idea is to give the piece an uneven tonality so that it doesn't look like a toy or a piece of perfectly painted plastic... by adding layers of washes and what I like to call... pigment washes... which basically are pigments applied with a wet brush so they go on like paint, but they dry with a chalky texture and again - easy to over do - but when done in moderation, you get a multi-layer, multi-dimensional look on your piece.
During this process I also painted the chips (I would've done actual chipping but my Vallejo chipping medium doesn't work with lacquer paints), and you do this with a dark brown color to simulate dark rusty metal... then you paint a small outline on one side of your painted chip with a lighter brown to give it dimension... then you add a little bit of rust pigment to give it texture... and do this all over the place.
On the next video, I will be building the actual diorama. Wish me luck!
Thank you for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed this build, and please don't forget to like and subscribe if you'd like to see more!
Cheers!
Ya boi
