Giyuu and Tanjiro didnt “defeat him” thats a HUGE misconception, especially to people who havent even read the manga. His past love, that woman, convinced him to stop and he realized what he had done and killed himself. He released a massive attack on himself killing him. Tanjiro and Giyuu didn’t do it.

Note for those who believe that Giyuu and Tanjiro killed Akaza (Major Manga Spoilers and Akaza's backstory):- This is a pure misconception. Akaza killed himself. Giyuu and Tanjiro just fought him. True that Akaza's head had been sliced off by Tanjiro and when he tried to put it back on, Giyuu threw his katana and the force pushed the head off the neck, but only the head disintegrated. Akaza closed his neck wound and began throwing off more and more attacks towards Tanjiro and Giyuu. Giyuu fought Akaza from then with his broken katana while Tanjiro passed out. But, as Akaza regenerated his head, he recollected memories of his human life. He stated in the manga that he hated Tanjiro because he reminded Akaza of this tiresome, horribly sad and ridiculous backstory (the phrases were used by Akaza to describe his backstory). The woman we see, is Hakuji's (Akaza's human name was Hakuji) fiancée, Koyuki. She and the man we saw, Keizo who was Akaza's teacher, were both poisoned to death by a neighbouring Dojo. Remembering his backstory, Akaza said that although he wanted to be strong so that he could bring back medicine for his father, pickpocket others for the money to buy medicines, be resilient to the beatings that he got when he was caught, learn the Soryu style of fighting which Keizo taught, protect Koyuki, cure her illness and take her to watch fireworks (she was too sick to watch fireworks and her mother had drowned herself out of frustration of Koyuki's seemingly incurable illness), but then, he realised that he had nothing left to protect because his father was dead, ( he committed su!c!de because he didn't want Akaza to live on by stealing money) and Keizo and Koyuki were both killed. In his fit of rage, he single handedly murdered 67 people of the neighbouring dojo. The murder was so gruesome that 30 years later, records were disposed off because it was believed to be fabricated. While returning, Muzan who thought there was a demon who killed 67 people met Akaza. He saw potential and forcefully converted Akaza into a demon. Akaza just did not care anymore. He lost his memories and committed many acts of carnage throughout the years. Maybe, that's why, demonic patterns resembling criminal tattoos have covered his body. In his last moments, he was reunited with Koyuki and even though Muzan tried to force Akaza into fighting back, he refused to fight anymore. In the end, Akaza used Destructive Death : Annihilation Type (he used this against Rengoku and this was the fatal blow for Rengoku) on himself and stopped his regeneration willingly. Ultimately, he wasn't killed by Giyuu and Tanjiro but instead chose to commit su!c!de himself, realising his sins. He could have easily accepted Muzan's urge to fight back, and he would have won since Giyuu was exhausted and Tanjiro had already passed out from exhaustion. All that kept Giyuu going at that point of time was the fact that he wanted to protect Tanjiro the way he had been protected by Tsutako (his elder sister) and Sabito (his best friend). He didn't want to lose yet another family member or friend, but he was very tired from fighting Akaza even in his marked condition (the demon slayer mark increases one's stamina, strength, speed and attack accuracy). If Akaza had chosen to follow Muzan's orders, Giyuu and Tanjiro would have died because then Akaza's could regenerate his head as many times as Giyuu and Tanjiro would cut it off (this is the case of Muzan which is why, only sunlight could kill him and I am not including Yoriichi's special case of slicing up Muzan because Tanjiro and the Hashira cannot do) and the only way he could have been killed would be dragging him into the sunlight which an exhausted Giyuu and Tanjiro definitely could not accomplish. Therefore Giyuu and Tanjiro *DID NOT* kill Akaza. Akaza killed himself, just like Kokushibo did. Of all three Upper Moons (Upper 1, Upper 2 and Upper 3), only Upper 2 Douma had been killed by the slayers (Shinobu, Kanao and Inosuke). Kokushibo and Akaza killed themselves out of remorse for their past actions. Fun Facts : 1. The Haku in Hakuji is the same kanji character as Koma in Komainu (a guardian statue at japanese shrines.). This meant that all Hakuji needed was something to protect like the way, Komainu protects a shrine. 2. Memories are the foundation of all of Akaza's techniques. The compass needle is shaped like the snowflakes on Koyuki's hairpin, the fighting style is the Soryu style which Keizo taught him, the technique names are those of fireworks, which Hakuji and Koyuki loved seeing. 1 like if you found this helpful in any way possible (It took me 30 minutes to type down all of this information and I didn't steal from anywhere. This is my understanding from reading the manga)
