Knowing he would probably be drafted for the Vietnam Conflict, James Hastings nevertheless decided to join the Marine Corps. Training at Parris Island, he wondered "What the heck did I do?" but realized that the USMC strips you down to build you up to be a Marine. Jim tells a gripping story of his time in Vietnam, 1967-68. As a rifleman with the First Marine Division, he not only witnessed, but was a part of a war where friends died and he was severely wounded. The camaraderie he experienced was life-long, and his honest and emotional remembrances of these friends, survival and life after the war are unforgettable.

I'm glad I get to comment. All I want to say after listening to many of these, is that this generation was defined by Vietnam. Good or bad. You never know what a person has gone through. Be nice. Welcome marine!

I have been wondering about my uncle Franklin Williams was the third man to die in Vietnam. I hoping to get some answers. I got mixed up with another Franklin Williams who also died. But not my uncle. The other Franklin D. Williams has a memorial for him in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. My uncle Franklin Williams lived in Eastern part of New Jersey. I think Hoboken or Hackensack, New Jersey. I believe Franklin Williams is PfC 3rd Battalion. Nobody wanted to tell this story. I asked other Veterans. They keep saying "I like to foget about it". I found this story about Operation Hastings on RU-vid. Thank you for giving me your story. Gives me alittle hope to tell my mom this history.

I taught English in Cambodia for 2 years and 10 months. I returned to the USA in Sept of 2017. Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Poi Pet, Cho Long, Batambang, Preah Vihear, and Snoul, the farthest the American Army penetrated during the "Cambodian Incursion" Spring of 1970. Snoul is only about 15 miles from the Vietnam, Cambodia border.

Just commenting. Some wives & girlfriends interviewed their soldiers in the late 70s & early 80s to write their stories. I've read over fifty of these personal stories. Bought them at B&N as paperbacks. This reminds me of that.

Welcome home, we all need to heal, I disagree with any combat soldier who says he didn't know why; we all knew what we were doing, we were killing COMMUNISTS, 2.5 MILLION OF THEM, NOT EVEN SAD ABOUT THAT, but I do have empathy for all non-combatants who were wounded or killed. Don't start a war if ya don't want casualties.

To address the interview criticism below from 2 years ago, the interviewer tries to have they one being interviewed be as specific and as detailed as possible, that includes probing for accounts, such as specific firefights, orders, ect, as well as explaining things that not everyone may know in the future (For historical purposes), such as the difference between NVC and Vietcong. Overall the interviews do what they should, and are done very well considering the age of most interviewed and the time lapse between the times.
@kipster-ll6po

I agree, but there needs to be some limit on asking the interviewee to explain absolutely everything. Otherwise, it begins to detract significantly. The viewers of this are not likely to be third graders. They will probably be people who know who the NVA were. With that said, if the alternative were for this interview not to have ever been made, then I am glad it was made. It still has worth, and I am still able to enjoy it, I suppose.
