I first noticed this when I was a teenager. The sound of someone chewing with their mouth open really triggered an uncomfortable response. People who incessantly chew gum also trigger it. I have never verbally or physically confronted anyone about it, usually I just try to leave their presence. Due to this, I was always hyper-aware of proper table manners and chewing with your mouth closed.

Me, too! People chewing with their mouth open or smacking their lips drives me up a wall. My brother, as well. But, we blame it on my mom.😂 She would holler at us everytime we did it.

I honestly wonder how some people I know who chew with their mouth open even keep food in their mouths! Especially as most also talk with food in their mouths! I politely asked 1 of them to try & be aware when they’re doing it bc it makes me nauseous. Was told “F U” & that it was “their right” to eat however they wanted. Why do people not understand that the technical legal right/freedom to do something DOES NOT mean it’s socially acceptable?!?

THIS! And i also hate whispers, specifically wet ones, they make me tense up a lot of the times. And when my mom whispers around me (she doesn't understand how much it disturbs me, and doesn't believe me everytime i try to explain) i have to mask the fact that im literally tensing up, and extremely disgusted. I will try to avoid saying anything aswell. But every time she notices me tense up as she whispers she gets angry 😭 i also don't want to get up and leave the room cause that may warrant a response. Its so hard, but im getting better at masking lol
@nephilimslayer73
@nephilimslayer73 6 месяцев назад
@@tinytornadomg Gidday. Why do you think that whispers trigger you to respond that way? Part of my journey has been to understand why certain things trigger me so that I can respond appropriately. My Mum was schizophrenic and she often (wrongly) assumed that people were talking about her negatively. If you can pinpoint a time when the sound triggered a negative response, you are on your way to identifying situations that can be avoided or modified. X

I’m a very chill person so the rage I feel with misophonia is awful. The worse is someone clicking a pen. If I can control it, meaning the person is a friend that I can tell to stop I’m okay. But sitting in a meeting with someone clicking their pen makes me absolutely despise them. It is awful. Plus people just don’t understand why it is so important to me. How do you describe feeling rage when some in the grocery store is smacking and snapping their gum?

I'm also a really chill person but can get almost overwhelmingly angry from misophonia despite all my friends describing me as really comforting to be around. I don't know about you guys but for me, the rage from misophonia really varies based on the person, what sound, how loud it is, the environment, ect. The "people" who trigger me the most is my dad and (it may sound weird) his dog. My dad always breathes really loudly and every couple of minutes makes a really loud sniffing sound as if he has a runny nose. He also chews really loudly and breathes through his mouth while doing so because he takes really big bites of food all at once. Adding to this, I'm also kind of a germaphobe and when he sneezes, instead of doing it into his elbow, he either doesn't cover his nose at all or sneezes into his bare hands. And here comes the dog part. His name is Clovis, he is Shorthaired, and licks himself a lot. He makes kind of a lip smacking sound when licking and it's really loud as he has a really big slobbery mouth compared to my husky. And even worse, when he licks his or any other dogs privates, he does this weird teeth chattering thing like the zombies from the movie world war z. I know licking is how they clean themselves and communicate with other dogs and it's normal but it's just really triggering to me and I try my best to ignore it or distract myself. Clovis also loves the mud and all things dirty so it's nearly impossible to keep him clean which is the reason why I'm so conscious about germs and dirt in the first place. I'm sorry to whoever read this far lol.

We get aggravated with our own eating and drinking sounds too so it’s not just other people. I hate the sound of my burps and hiccups, if I make sound when I drink, literally anything I get aggravated with other people for, I also get aggravated with myself. I have misophonia and the biggest trigger for me is actually the sound of children crying, especially that wailing baby cry. The guy in my room was snoring unbelievably loud literally all night. It was room shaking. The hours just kept ticking in so slowly and I couldn’t get any sleep. It was torture. I’ve never been closer to picking up a pillow and smothering someone in my life. Nurses couldn’t do anything about it. I wish I’d been an adult at the time because I would’ve checked myself out and driven home without a second thought. Maybe you could be a very loud eater? Interesting the way some people's mouths and lips are formed allows for different sounds. I never knew this until I saw a forensic documentary.

When you hear it there's an anger that wells up from inside of you that is impossible to ignore. I feel bad for my husband because he's had to learn to eat around me. We have a routine now. For a long time I thought it bothered me so much because of training from my mother. I'm pretty sure she has the same thing, but she's in the 5% that gets violent.

i absolutely despise when people “blow raspberries” like, after i hear someone make that noise, it just keeps replaying in my brain and it always makes me cringe - it’s like nails to a chalkboard for me. another thing is people putting extra emphasis on the last letter of words - idk why it irks me so bad but it does

I have to stop myself from yelling at them to just chew quieter because i know they can’t help it, but really i feel like they can. like just chew your food with your mouth closed. take smaller bites. is it really that hard?

Main treatment to reduce symptoms is exposure therapy. Avoiding the sound can make it worse. Otherwise from my experience, it's about finding ways to make it manageable. Wearing earplugs or headphones is a strategy. I find chewing tolerable when there's a secondary noise around so I ask my partner to wait for me to turn on a show on to start eating. If I'm really desperate and can't get away, I'll scratch the inside of my ear to override the noise.

@@jbrown9431 I can attest to exposure therapy. I used to find the noise of animal licking intolerable but I worked with animals so I constantly had to manage it. I'm not 100% better but I no longer want to rip my ears off when my cat eats food for instance

I'd like to know if sufferers of this condition also find other minor things infuriating. For instance, do you find it enraging if someone accidentally gets in your path... or, do you get enraged if someone is in the seat that you want to sit in?
@mygirldarby
@mygirldarby 3 месяца назад
No. Misophonia is only about getting enraged over specific sounds. It doesn't make me abnormally enraged if someone gets in my way or anything like that. Misophonia is very particularly about sound.

My misaphonia is getting worse and I don't know why. Sometimes, My Parents Snore and I start kicking my bed and saying shut up. It's been happening since yr 4. U guys know. Because u took at "test on me" even though it wasn't even a test 😨😨 Tbh I don't know why I put emojis. When people chew I feel like banging there throat and shoving a damn whole Titanic down their greedy throat. Romessa the little brat. She does it too me on purpose and whenever she "chews" she gets all nice and says "oh I'm sorry for being a little RAT I won't do it" and then she ALWAYS does it including my brother Waleed. He does it all the time. My mum knows but she doesn't care. Well She CARES a lot. It's just whenever my brother comes down stairs (where I am) he always gets something to eat. So I always go upstairs but whenever he asks me what's wrong "why do I always go upstairs" I say "idk" EVEN THOUGH IT'S BECAUSE HE'S CHEWING LIKE LOUD. But I know it's not his fault. Anyways, today my parents were snoring and my mum has a fever so her snoring was LOUD. I kicked the bed and groaned about a million times. Until, my dad made an impression on me he went "CHEW CHEW CHEW SHHH" Even Though he knows it's not my fault. He thought sending me to my grandma's /cousins house was a "good idea" but the last time I went too my grandmas house she chews so loud and she kept me awake until 7AM. But I just wanted to let u know that since u guys r my friends. Bye 💞
