At leaast you aren't,"mad as a hatter." Early days they used mercury to treat the fur used in making felt hats in confined spaces and they would develope, "Hatter's Disease" from the mercury. It was mercury poisoning. I enjoyed the video!

@@user-et4hi3sr8o Hi there, the best is to use hot steam to get a felt hat back in shape. If you don't have a steamer you can help yourself by boiling water and hold the hat into the steam.

I really like how you did the sweatband. Just a nice leather strip with holes and a thick thread. That way you can sew the leather directly onto the felt, nice one!

Awesome craftsmanship, I’ve always loved seeing how hatters go about their trade. Was the water you submerged the hat in at the beginning hot or at least somewhat warm? I saw another video where the water they used was so hot that the hat body came out steaming!

Thank you. Yes exactly, the hotter the water the easier it gets to work with the felt.

Hello, I have only one question. Do you use any glue for stif? I'm on beginning of my millinery road, im practising on the cheapest wool felt, im following youtube tutorials and i wonder if I use rabbit hair felt, hat will be stiff after steaming and waiting 2/3 days without use stiff products. Now after that 2 days hats still are soft.
2 года назад
Dear Kamil, yes we mainly use rabbit hair felt. Only steaming won't make your felt any stiffer. To stiffen your felt you need to add felt stiffener either with a brush or with a spray. The more liquid you use the stiffener your felt will get. You can purchase felt stiffener directly or mix your own with shellac and alcohol. Best Regards, Oxblood Team

Dear Parker, in the video you see the making of two different hats. One with a flat brim and one with an upturn brim. To cut the brim you need a rounding jack. You see the tool in the video after Min 2:08.

Si el sombrero se moldea con vapor de agua, ¿qué sucedería si se moja con la lluvia?. No veo que apliquen impermeabilizante o fijador.

Hi Sinobre, that's not a problem, as the felt can only be shaped with hot steam and water doesn't harm the felt.
