Hattori Hanzō began his life out as a samurai, but through family ties and the implementation of guerrilla warfare, he would adopt the ways of the ninja. Under the service of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu he would be given his very own ninja clan.

I love the fact that so many of these people from history were said to have "powers". To me that speaks to the level of their skills being so overpowering that the only explanation was that they had to be supernatural. A man being so fast and moving so perfectly HAD to be teleportation. Nothing else could explain it in the minds of his enemies. Legend indeed.
@mithshude
@mithshude 5 лет назад
i think the teleportation part comes from the deception arts of the shinobi, they would appear and dissapear in a cloud of smoke wich could probably be seen as teleportation and magic back in the days for example. in reality they just threw some ash at their opponent and ran away/killed them ^^ (google metsubushi)

In similar vain, when you hear of old western stories of magical, unbreakable swords, it is possible that the story has been passed down from bronze/iron age, where (respectively) an iron/steel sword would have seemed magical due to it being more durable. Always remember, any sufficiently advanced technology seems like magic to those who do not understand it.

@@neXxsuss No, there are pleeeeeenty of accounts of simply doing this in action in a secluded place when defeat is assured without any contact with such persons. If you are beaten or better, killed and beheaded, both are dishonorable, especially if you die without a blade in your hands or near you (same for birth) and the act itself is a defiance of the enemy. It is so that they cannot overtake one's honor in victory or dictate the means of one's death. It is granted as a mercy from a Shogun is for a man who faces dishonor but has been found to have been useful in life, and is given the honor of dictating his own death and at his own hands--as opposed to being slain like a beggar or thief, run down or hung--to face an end with a cold and stern, fearless face and attitude.

Samurai was a social class, and ninja was an occupation, so people could be both samurai and ninja.
@MaaZeus
@MaaZeus 5 лет назад
Yeah, technically Ninja/Shinobi is just a spy, skills and equipment is irrelevant. A samurai like Hanzo could be a spy, therefore Ninja. As well as the fisherman in the village who knows jack and shit how to fight but is paid to spy so now he is a Ninja. That said, professional spec op spies like guys from Iga were probably quite amazing in what they could do if we can trust the history texts. Group of real life James Bonds.
@user-kj5qy8ip5v
@user-kj5qy8ip5v 5 лет назад
@@MaaZeus I'd like to also add samurai is actually bushi which means warrior. And shinobi if you study the etymology you can infer one who prevents or the one who ceases. Shi refers to people and places. And nobi which means growth and postponement. Snd philosophically it makes sense if you steal or kill you're preventing that person from growing or causing them to cease in their progression. So a shinobi bushi I think would be the correct term for the profession

the Kill Bill reference derives differently, it's based on a hit tv series of a ninja character who shared the name but was set closer to modern day that was very successful and went on for many seasons in japan, that series was of course inspired by the legends of Hattori Hazo originally, the Hanzo in Kill Bill is supposed to be that same Hanzo from the tv series, so there's a link there but not really a direct derivation.

My man you are killing it! With all the characters that you are covering from history! Absolutely love it! All the figures in history I love. Hanzo was a brilliant military commander and excelled in spear fighting actually. While stationed in Japan I actually got to go see the monument/shrine etc where his remains and weapons are kept on display. The spear was actually damaged during the bombings of WWII its rumored to have been about 14" long! His prowess in espionage and things I say are a bit exaggerated to supernatural abilities. I'd say the fact he excelled so exceptionally well at manipulation/deception and other effective tactics. It appeared supernatural to others. By him always being several steps ahead of his adversaries. Thus, hyping the mysticism of him being able to vanish, reappear, etc. Its common guerilla tactics utilized by special operations forces of the armed forces and agencies. To cause confusion, fear, paralysis amongst the ranks of their enemies. As well as utilizing and knowing the terrain to your own advantage. After all combat of any form has been proven to be more mental/psychological than physical. That comes with using pyrotechnic devices/agents or such (smoke grenades/bombs to conceal and cover movements), exploding chemical agents (CS gas/bombs made from crushed peppers etc) that'll cause individuals to freak out even more. When its causing them to choke, sneeze, vomit, eyes to itch/burn and so forth. Hanzo excelled in these areas nonetheless and knew how to utilize them to gain the tactical advantage. They said he became a monk afterwards and died in other accounts I've heard from nationals there. Interesting nonetheless and Oda Nobunoga is one of my favorites. Hideyoshi, Goemon, Honda Tadakatsu, kenshin, Masamune, Musashi, Maeda, Yukimura, Yagyu Jubei, Nagamasa, Mitsunari are a few other popular characters of the feudal era. I can name so many more. That I've read about and studied that are very interesting. My post is long enough haha...keep up the excellent work! Absolutely astounding sir!
@thelegendsofhistory
@thelegendsofhistory 6 лет назад
Yes! I overlooked mentioning the spear fighting as there was so much to get my head around with the politics and the many ambiguities in Japanese history and feudal Japan. That's mad! I'd love to see his shrine one day. Yes, I think your analysis of his 'powers' are correct. Obviously, at the time these sorts of gadgets as smoke bombs and the like were quite new so it's natural people at the time would conceive it as 'magic' or some form of mystic. Thanks for the suggestions! Will get round to a few of them. And thanks for your continued support :)

I highly recommend watching a Netflix documentary called "Age of Samurai" to understand the context surrounding Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. How they came together and their role in the sengoku period. Another Samurai worth mention was Tadakatsu Honda. One of the greatest samurai that ever lived, who served Ieyasu in this period.

I think that the ninjas did have skills and abilities, however, they were probably not as unique as some might suppose. There were various guerrilla groups and assassins throughout history and they developed specialized skills including stealth and unarmed combat. I remember hearing about a group during WWII in England called the Auxiliary Services which were supposed to remain behind enemy lines if England was invaded and harass the Germans. They actually practiced stealth movements where they sneaked behind people without them noticing, something the ninja were renown for. Over time these skills and tricks got forgotten or exaggerated over time, and hype from both the ninja and those who were their fans made them seem like supernatural warriors. The reality was they were spies and scouts, some of their tricks were developed from Sun Tzu's Art of War. They even served along side their samurai counter-parts in battles as spies and scouts. In Stephen K Hayes's book on the ninja martial arts, he showed a picture of Hattori Hanzo and it showed him wearing samurai armor rather than anything we would picture a ninja wearing.

That part about ieyasu's son committing seppuku, it kinda happened differently, see, ieyasu was being suspected of treason and to prove his loyalty he sentenced his son to commit seppuku, and hanzo didn't refuse to kill him, he was appointed to act as his second, he didnt want to, but he did, he cut his head off, but he still shed a tear

I'm suprised no one here has mentioned perhaps one of the most well known inspirations from hanzo. Scorpion. NRS exclusively made scorpions name Hanzo Hasashi and he was a demon ninja both a play on his real life inspirations name and titles and even his abilities being the play on descriptions for how powerfully he was portrayed

Hold up!! I have to stop you right there at the 0:09 seconds.. The "Kill Bill" Hattori Hanzo is an Easter egg reference to the actor's resume (somewhat).. Although the character in kill bill is completely different, the actor Sonny China, who plays him in Kill Bill actually plays the real Hattori Hanzo samurai from an old 80's Japanese drama, so technically... You are talking about the same guy... The show was called Shadow Warriors and he plays the real Hattori in the show. Here is a link to the TV opening. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dxv_OdAfvRc.html I only remember because I watched it as a kid on this local Public Access channel
