I drove a C70 Chevy with a 427 tall block and a 5+4 dump truck out of the local stone quarry after High School. It was only a year or two ago old when I started driving it. That thing was a Horse! After I mastered the transmissions, I could make that thing fly. 18 foot bed with 5 foot tall sides. Would have made a Great Farm Truck. Thank You JT.
45 years ago 5&4's were all over the place. The upside was there was almost always the right gear for climbing a hill. The downside was sometimes you had to shift both sticks on a steep hill. If you blew a shift you came to a halt and had to start out in 1st and 2nd which made that hill take forever to get over. I didn't shed a tear when the 5&4 got phased out. An 18 speed is way way better.
Love the truck man. Several farmers in my area have in the past few years been getting these old trucks as there new work rigs. It has been so fun seeing them and hearing them on the road.
That was a fun ride, I have driven the old 2 speed rear trucks and the eaten trannies but the only 2 stickers were the 6 speed macks... Thanks for the ride JT!!!
The whole truck is looking good now that the grain bed is painted ! & thanks for the ride along , I like the way the way the GMC , & Chevrolet trucks of that period only had one color for the interior lol ! I have a 1964 Chevrolet Corvair 95 Greenbrier window van , & were the inside rear doors that are not repainted yet have that same beige metal color ! Thanks again for the video.
Glad to see someone shifting a twin stick with one hand, everyone always seams to say it takes both hands. I float gears in my 65 White with a Cummins and 5+3 one handed, no problem. I’ve found it much easier to float gears with diesel, I think due to rpm not rising or falling off as fast.
As much fun as it was seeing you kick the old GMC into warp speed at seven and a half minutes....I am glad my old GMC has a V8 and doesn't have that transmission you have there. Just call me lazy I guess! Can sure relate to your last comment, so much to do don't know where to start!
I helped out in the pit this last season, was definitely cool seeing those old dump trucks still used. My second least favorite one though is an international loadstar one guy has. All it has is 3 little door on the back that take FOREVER to dump. My favorite ones are the trucks with the bifold plus one door. Those you can empty in about 30 seconds.
I have one of those wood box trucks, three small openings at the back....500 bushels. Sit and wait!! Ok when augering to a bin...but not so good at the elevator.
The grain trucks I drove were the square body. The main transmission didn't grind, it was like shifting a car transmission. The Brown Lite auxillary would grind if I didn't shift perfectly just like an Eaton Fuller. Once I figured out that the Brown Lite transmission was a 500 RPM drop and the main transmission was a 1000 RPM drop things went easier.
That’s a pretty nice old truck. I was watching the steering wheel when you were driving, the old farm truck I drove, had to work your left arm back and forth to keep it straight. Where are you in Michigan, I live in the South East Michigan. The farm country looks similar. The only thing that would make the old truck really cool is a 6V-53 Detroit Diesel. Thanks for the videos.
I drove a late 70's DT466 (identical HP) with a 5&4 hauling drilling mud into the mountains. I didn't think much of it back then and am glad they moved on. The newer DT466 has way more power. The 5&4 is a bit easier to shift in a diesel.
With minor maintenance that old truck will still be working when they bury the last E/V battery and windmill in the landfill next to the towns water supply.........
I have never driven a twin stick truck. Guessing you don't get much seat time in yours to practice shifting. First thing I was taught was don't rush shifting on unsycronized transmission's.
Up shifting with a 237 Mack you had to remember to pull it into neutral, have a sandwich, half a cup of coffee and a cigarette, then shift it into the next gear. 😆
Neat you found the FFW button in the truck 😀Have you mastered the scales yet? Make sure you haven't been on the throne after a steak dinner and bring your trash with. While the truck is dumping, you also dump and take out the trash 😇. That's stealing and only posted for humorous purposes! Also with all the stuff to do, you need an 80s hairband accompanied video montage. You should have all your stuff done in 3 minutes! 😉
Dude.... :-/... Just put the auxillary in 2nd and shift the main transmission through it's 4 or 5 gears and then shift the aux into 3rd or 4th depending on your speed and load requirements. Downshift into 2nd in the aux and then drop the gears in the main box when you're slowing down. Trust me... I've been contending with these worn out pos for 30 years now.... :-/ lol
@@jtsbarnngrill6873 Yep that’s about right. Granny low on the brownie box never needed unless you are really hard loaded down. Depending on how low the main is you can probably start in 2nd too
