Before heading back down in the spring you should totally take a leg via the Åland and Finnish archipelago, lots of neat places to explore and plenty of natural harbours for free anchoring! Very very nice sailing.

Sam its been great following your videos from you left usa, its been a great achievement for you. As for the yanmar cold start problem, if it were my engine i would aquire an eberspacher or mikuni diesel air heater glowplug and drill and tap a threaded hole in the air intake manifold and fit the glowplug in. Wire it through a relay from ignition circuit so it heats while holding key in crancking position and disconnects when engine starts. Probably a preheater element from an older tractor might be better as it wouldent draw as much current. Certainly would improve cold starting. Not been critical but would advice renewing raw water filter before it disentegrares and leaves u in the brown smelly stuff. Im a great believer in the 6 P,s Im preparing my boat for a cruise to orkney & shetland from the clyde this year. Enjoy your break.
@Mike-bs5pi
@Mike-bs5pi 2 года назад
That's a good tip, thanks. Never would have thought to modify the engine to have a glowplug. Another option I can see would be to get a secondary switch for the plug, or to change the ignition switch to one with glowplug function maybe. That way you can warm up the plug before cranking, as it should be.
@svechappe6075
@svechappe6075 2 года назад
A testament both to Sam's abilities but also the soundness of the Cape Dory. That boat has taken good care of you, Sam. There should be a known fix for your cold start issue. Our Yanmar always fires up on the first crank in temps down as low as 25 deg F, even after being winter stored for 6 months. I would talk to a Yanmar tech.

I had the same probelm with my diesel heater. its just a question of adjusting the fan. I put a washer or two under the screw that fastens the elctrical panel. That way the fan was adjusted a lot better to the sensor. The fan itself also had some casting residues, that initially rubbed against the sensor. I removed the residues with sandpaper and voila! A have no more errors...

Sam, what a spectacular sailing season that was, well done, Eric the Viking has an awful lot of catching up to do to equal your ocean crossing explorations! Do you have any photos/plans or video of the fitting of your transom platform, they are so practical I think they should be on all sailboats where possible especially for singlehanders to assist boarding from swimming or dinghy’s! Does the wind vane operate beside it, they seem very close together? SkipRay.

I have a small John Deere tractor with a Yanmar diesel. It has an electric air heater that preheats the intake so when starting, the intake air is warmed. It starts very well, even when below freezing. Maybe you can find and retrofit to your situation. Just a thought.

I seem to recall that when you solo sailed to Hawaii, you had not sailed a boat on anything larger than a lake or a bay! I admire what you have accomplished. In SA to do similar you require to pass your captains certification. For this reason, I would like to buy a US registered boat which is exempt from this requirement. I am bright enough to pass these exams but after I was run down by a truck, I have lost the ability to write legibly which kind of limits me!

Sam, was taken aback when I saw that it was necessary to cut the mast electrical-wires. Anyway, do-not use simple spade quick disconnects unless you can 100% guarantee that there will be absolutely air-tight and no water ingress because they will quickly corrode. I would try and find some gas/water-tight locking connectors to permanently install (maybe in a watertight enclosure) if you feel you will ever need to disconnect in the future. If not, I would make strong mechanical connections with each wire (probably J-hooks since you don't have a lot of extra cable) then carefully solder each connection and then seal every wire and the bundle with fusion-tape--making sure you fill any air-pockets or voids (use plenty of tape and wrap the outside at least 6-8 inches each way from the splice). But whatever you do, the connections need to be gas-tight or you'll for sure get corrosion in the connections from constant sea-air and water. Q: Are you an Amateur (Ham) Radio operator; HF is a great communications medium and a good way to pass time when all your books, podcasts, and movies are stuck in the cloud--LOL? And if you lose your other electronics, it can save you in an emergency situation. When I was young I used to keep radio-schedules with several ships in both the Atlantic and Pacific. I would pass progress-reports, weather information and exchange welfare checks with their families using both voice and morse-code. This was all before modern GPS, and satellites were available. Really love your videos and your GREAT community of commentors--have learned a lot on you channel!

Re: your water tank inspection port, I installed the same inspection ports on my water tanks. Remove the ports and reinstall, but caulk first. I used Butyl rubber tape. The screw top should have an O ring so that is probably not the problem. The leaks are where the port screws into the tank.
@svechappe6075
@svechappe6075 2 года назад
I've found that even with a brand new inspection port of that type with the O-ring, they still leak if submerged unless you really crank them on ridiculously tight. We had to use a hammer and screw driver to pound-rotate the lid super tight to keep water from entering the bilge from our swim platform. Kind of defeats the purpose of being an inspection port. They seem to only be designed to keep casual water out, not submerged water.

As for your diesel heater.. if its a Chinese copy you should probably carry two spares for it especially in colder climate. Or get the webasto version and have a little less worry. Maybe a aftermarket intake heater would help your cold start trouble. BD diesel makes one that looks straight forward to install.. BD Diesel 1041563 X-Flow Air Intake Heater Kit.

When abouts are you planning on re-floating Pickled Herring? I enjoy your Vlogs and admire how you face your challenges. I was disabled in 1992 when a speeding truck wiped out my car after punching it into me, disabling me. I know that I cannot handle a boat much larger than 40 foot but you make smaller boats look easier to handle. I live in Zululand, South Africa and even in winter, the coldest it gets is maybe 18 centigrade. I get sea breezes warmed by the currents flowing South from the Equator so it is highly unlikely to ever snow here.

Sam: A lot of old school Direct-Injected Diesels....the owners would tap a hole in the intake to recieve GM style 9volt fast glow plug. Yes, those GM 9volt glow plugs get yellow real fast versus a 12volt glow plug. Usually in colder climates where people did that. Even Cummins then/now equip their direct-injected diesels with an Intake glow plug (just 1)...to stir up the air for extreme cold scenarios and cold-blooded engines. Just an idea for you to keep in mind. When time and weather allows....make sure to do as much preventive and necessary maintenance before you lower your boat back in the water. The water is no place to play Russian Roulette with stuff that needs to be looked at and fixed.
