A put a G56 in my 98 12v and it's awesome for towing now... the automatic did great on the highway but it was terrible on slow roads (out of lock up). I never drove an nv4500 truck but i heard the 3-4 gap was annoying.
It's not bad, rev 3rd to 2100 rpms then upshift to 4th and it's perfect. Honestly the nv4500 is one of the best driving manual trans for a truck. Shifts fast, feels almost flickable compared to 6 spds. Coming from 2 - nv4500's, 2 - nv5600s, zf5 and driving zf6 on occasion as well
@@alanack67 hmmmm....might need to have a shop take a look at mine then. It's been beat pretty good. 5th gear fell off when my dad owned it a bit ago, so I've been having to make do with 4th over (Gear Vendors Splitter) but it's far from ideal. Shifting is pretty slow with the clutch, unless you float the gears. Then it's pretty speedy. Finally got the cash to get working on that truck though. My goal is to restore it to it's former glory, no matter the cost. I'll get there...someday lol.
@@hartlandnorthwest well, might be worth a shot. Usually the lower bearing in the steering column manifests as a really bad sort of "death wobble," but sometimes it's pretty minimal. That said, it's like $60 or something. Lots of guys swear by it.
