Disney Journey Episode #25
We all love a good Disney Theme Park ride, and the Haunted Mansion is a classic. However, the experience can be even better if a park guest is riding when it breaks down. In this episode of Disney Journey, I share my experience of what happened to me when the Haunted Mansion broke down.
Jim Shull retired from Walt Disney Imagineering after a career of over three decades leading the creative design of rides, shows and attractions worldwide. Disney Journey is a video series where I share personal experiences and insights about the past, present and possible future of the Disney Parks and Resorts. Disney Journey is also the RU-vid channel where I share insider knowledge and behind-the-scenes insights.

What a treat this was! You've captured some views I've never seen before. Strangely, it just makes the magic more amazing.

As a kid I was so excited to see Space Mountain with the lights on; as an adult I wasn't as excited when I was stuck on x2 for 45 minutes at the end of the night.

Happened to me as a kid on Journey Into Imagination. My dad has VHS footage of it somewhere & spoke of it every year we rode it, up until the closure & demolition of the original masterpiece by Tony Baxter & all the other incredible Imagineers involved.

The Journey to Imagination is a classic. If the vehicles had coasted into the white paper fair scene it would have made the ride even better. Thanks for watching.

I waited for six years for the Haunted Mansion to open, from 1963 (my first trip to Mousetown) until 1969. But, oh, the wait was worth it once I entered by foyer! To this day it remains my favourite ride. It's fun to be able to peak behind the scenes like this. :-)

As somebody who religiously visited Disney World every year for about 15 or so… I got to see quite a few of the rides breakdown and get walked through the back areas. Unfortunately, the video camera that I had at the time was huge and easily discernible. So I couldn’t take any good video. But it was interesting to see how many of these rides worked. Your videos are bringing back many of those memories. I hope all is well.

All is well and I remember the early days of lugging video cameras and battery packs into the Disney parks. A good way to get a work out. Especially in Summer. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for this video! Sometime in the late 80s/early 90s, I experienced a live person in Knight's armor doing jump scares in the haunted hallway. Was that a thing Disney did for a short time or to replace a breakdown in the suit of armor that normally tips at the doom buggy? Whatever it was, I screamed so loud! Haha!

I experienced the jumping knight! I think it was probably too much excitement so they stopped. I know for years after that, I was afraid he appeared at random!

That you for such a cool story. I love the stealth missions into Universal and hearing things from a perspective that I often look through when I'm in a theme park. I love listening to you talk about the little things, like the little beaver on Grizzly River Run. I'm going to have to go back and watch everything so a can learn to hone my perspective to see even the finest details. I always liked being on a ride where I would get evacuated ... er, in show exit. My list of rides is short, but includes Pirates of the Caribbean (exit near the wench auction that goes through the service area and out back), Indiana Jones Adventure (broken near the bug wall, got to see the rolling boulder scene and cast members explained the illusion), Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (stuck on the second lift and took a long, mostly inside tunnel), Space Mountain (Not sure where, but we were "in show exited" down from near the top), Splash Mountain (stuck just before the finale and exited the door next to Brer Rabbit you can see from the queue). I think that's it. Loads of fun spying on things. I always wanted to be an imagineer, ever since my first visit to Disneyland in 1975 when I got to ride the Pirates of the Caribbean. Wish I would have listened to my dad who believed I could do it, but instead listened to the sea of negative naysayers. I'm looking forward to more videos and I really hope your channel takes off. You are the first imagineer that I've seen who has a RU-vid channel. And thank you for everything you did to make everyone's Disney park experiences, special.

When I participated in the Disney College Program (latter 2000’s), they always had free tours & activities we could sign up for on The Hub. One such tour was Haunted Mansion Flashlight Tour around mid September until the week before Halloween. 1-2 sessions a week, but they filled up so quickly that I couldn’t get a spot even if I was logged on at the time the signup was opened. I sure would have loved to see the WDW Version of it during my internship, but the Disneyland one even more so as the entire park has an all encompassing feeling of care, history, and immersion that you can only truly appreciate when you get to experience it. One day I’d love to return but I’m thankful for that one day I was able to go!

I spent hours working inside Anaheim’s version of Haunted Mansion and what struck me was how simple the effects were and how much of the set work was based on theatrical principles. Researching the correspondence the time between the facility completion and the show set installation was mere months before opening. Thanks for watching.

@@jimhshull Thanks for the reply 😊 Pepper’s Ghost is used so impeccably there (with the ballroom dancing/dinner scene being so flawless - with the women leading the men 😉). The forced perspective in the Hallway w/ Candelabra, Watchful Busts & inversion, The Stretching Portraits (with Disneyland’s having a multi-function application), & so many others standing the test of time. I’m not a big fan of the newer changes, simply because I know that practical usually lasts much longer than computer generated in terms of “believability”. Tangentially & having been lucky enough to have seen the original sketches of Claude Coats, Rolly Crump, Marc Davis, and Ken Anderson, all the vastly different versions each proposed but ultimately came together to create my favorite Disneyland/Magic Kingdom attraction is so delightful. I would still love to have seen a fully realized “Museum of The Weird as Rolly had envisioned.

A surprise not a shock. The Omni movers are locked in the attic to look in the opposite direction from the maintenance bay. The riding guests can’t look behind them to see the roll up steel door. Thanks for watching.

@@jimhshull That's what I call "Disney magic". Also, I appreciate how you enjoy the behind-the-scenes as much as the rest of us non-Imagineers. I had a dear friend, David Mumford, who was a show set producer at WDI for 20+ years ~ even after all those years, he got a kick out of that stuff as well.

Jim, thank you so much for the stories and the photos! I'm curious, when working as an Imagineer, could you have gotten access to walk around an attraction with the work lights on, or would that have been difficult to arrange?
@Primogen16
@Primogen16 26 дней назад
When I worked for Walt Disney Computer Software about 35 years ago, my manager arranged for a couple of us to walk with a Quality Assurance person during his morning inspection of Disneyland in the morning before the park opened, and we got to see behind the scenes of a lot of attractions with the lights on, including Haunted Mansion. I have a picture of me with a couple of the ghost figures whose reflections you see in the ballroom scene.

I think there are quite a few of us that are hoping that when the new haunted mansion shop opens, that we'd be able to view that old pet cemetery possibly through the back window or even better if the back had doors... what do you think the chances of this happening are?

I've walked off Splash Mountain (twice!), Peter Pan's Flight, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (also twice). So far, I've not had the opportunity to walk off The Haunted Mansion (I did come close on a trip in June of 2023, but they reset everything, and everyone, including myself applauded!). And finally, I hope I never have to walk off of Pirates of the Caribbean!

Paid $320 for two tickets and after 5 hours and two rides, we left. Never to return. They told us we need to make a reservation to get into the Haunted Mansion. Sorry for complaining.
@hamiltoncox7651
@hamiltoncox7651 24 дня назад
I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but yeah, Disneyland is a pale imitation of what it used to be. I'm an annual pass holder and reluctantly go for a few hours every now and then because I paid for it, but it's usually a bad experience. Too many people, half the place is continually under renovation, you have to pay extra to even hope to get on a ride - the best of which are half a century old and falling apart.

the reservation for HM is temporary while they construct a new queue. sorry you're visit coincided with the refurbishment. once disneyland is "fully operational" again i hope they do away with all reservations, both for attractions and to generally get in the park. they really detract from the experience of going to disneyland.
