Hauschka at NPR: Improvisation

Listening to a piece by Hauschka can be deceiving: What sounds like an ensemble of musicians and instruments is just one man, performing at one piano. His real name is Volker Bertelmann, and he hails from Dusseldorf, Germany, where he works with his "prepared piano." He wrests disruptive sounds from the instrument's 88 keys by outfitting the strings or mallets with objects such as ping-pong balls, aluminum foil and leather. His new album is titled Foreign Landscapes, and he recently visited NPR's studios to demonstrate his craft.

Jordan Romanacce was exactly right (see comments below) the : " piano already has a range and vastness of color and volume that is unsurpassed by any other solo instrument. Prepared piano only further unfolds its diversity. Awesome."

I love prepared piano! I hope more people keep innovating with objects, nails, and all of the unique things one can use to manipulate, or as some would say instead coax he sound out of a piano. Thanks for sharing!

This is great...and it's nice to hear something melodic from a prepared piano for once. I think the concept has real mainstream classical potential once people realize it doesn't have to play some atonal catharsis piece (not that there's anything wrong with that...I love John Cage :-) )

I hear that in movie soundtracks all the time. Once you know how prepared piano sounds

Sort of proves my theory that no one really likes that BS except people who want everyone to know how artsy they are. If you want percussion with your piano then get someone to play percussion, don't just stick nails and rubber bands into a perfectly good piano.

Brilliant! Through simple but great little ideas he transforms his instrument into a musically multi-textural performance tool that sounds totally complete on its own :D Great stuff

Yes performed by a performer/composer that prepares his piano in a manner worthy of a great orchestrator; I think somewhere Ravel is smiling. ;)

just saw Hauschka perform last night at the Piano City Milano, Italia, outdoor main stage in via Palestro 16... absolutely stunning... the weather taunted with thunder and lightening dancing across heavy gray skies... when the sounds of the ping-pongs on the strings gave the listeners a sensation of rain.... a beautiful experience... thank you!

those are the lights from the Ebows and an ebow it's a device specially for guitar, you put it on the guitar string, play a note and it will emit a continuous sound even if you change the note.
