I remember my mother cleaned offices like this in the late 70s, and sometimes we would go along with her. It really did look like this: brown carpet, files stacked haphazardly everyywhere, smouldering ashtrays and that smell of stale cigarette smoke. It looks so old-fashioned now, but it really was like that. Also, I'm sure that's Steve Hodson as the idealistic young employee at the start

That smell of stale smoke and sweat (no showers) was in every building, hotel and airport in the 70s and 80s!

Years ago we had a chap who topped up lead-acid batteries where I worked on the railway. He always had a ciggie on. One afternoon his luck ran out, as he tried to undo a filler cap, there was a build-up of gas in the battery box and BOOM. The only thing I could think to do was spray him completely with the hose we used to fill up the train buffets and loo tanks. Ambulance crew told me I'd saved his life by so doing. The stupid thing was tha all he had to do was release a catch and the batteries could be easily slid out. He'd been bollocked by everyone including me for the ciggies while topping up too. You just can't tell some people !

Just imagine if that had been an unvented CET (Sileage) tank after five days out of depot! :-o :-p That said, this (And widespread electrification) are two of many reasons why trains use diesel and not petrol. Could you imagine what'd happen to a petrol driven unit if a 25kV catenary collapsed onto it? :-o

These films are wonderful time capsules - never their intended use. Fashions, technology, working practices, design - it's all there! In other news: only let a man with a beard fix equipment! You may cause 'pounds' of damage otherwise...

Several years ago, I had a coworker who placed a space heater on a cardboard box lid surrounded by loose paper. I complained to my boss, who didn't think it was a big deal because nothing was hot (yet). I then complained to maintenance, who went ballistic. They took the heater and chewed out the girl and my boss. The girl threw a fit about the whole thing because she didn't think it was a big deal. She told me, "I do that at home!" "And you haven't burned down your house yet? Amazing!" I was so glad when she quit.

Have a Good Day, Dear (1977) UK Public Information Film 2320pm 15.5.23 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH sadly, and as boring as these kindda films are - and they still have staff and trainees watch this drivel ad nauseam - they still seem necessary. all the eager beavers watching saying to themselves i aint gonna do that... let's hope the kids dishing out the "good advice" are as cautious as the films suggest we should be... can't say i have ever grassed on a colleague, though i know of chaps who wanna make the grade will purposely leave health and safety issues laying around to then blame the innocent sap who really hasn't decided whether or not he wants to ascend that greasy pole of fame and or success within the company... they're so tiresome one really can't be bothered. gaining employ or trying to be as conscientious as they demand one should be... take that dog shit, for instance... you leave it lying around as it turns crusty in the sun. and then grass on young jed who doesnt even own a pet or keep animals of any sort... for continuity's sake you place a dog or cat in his home for good copy as the cameras role. obviously when he's out at the shops or trynna convince the dole office he's suitably job motivated. you just know tony's gonna enjoy the mass conflagration you set off in the office block as you get turned down for that promotion you put yerself forward for earlier in the month - said promotion gaff ends up in monty's moniker to save your face...

I was born in the 90s and I've never seen films like this before, in my school we would read and learn all about it, it's clever how they did this back then
@7otto666

They used to produce films like this and show them in classrooms with a 16mm projector. Films about drugs, and other dangers. The ones tough to watch were the driving hazard films. They would show very gory scenes from auto accidents. It was harsh. But i must say, i've always tried to be a careful driver, ha ha.

Just hows how much offices have changed in the last 40 years. No computers, no safety glass, everybody smoking. My mum cleaned offices back then, and I remember as a kid going along sometimes, they really did look like the on ein the film, piles of paper, typewriters, those mustard-yellow carpets you only ever saw in offices. And everywhere that stale cigarette smoke smell. I love to watch Ephemeral Film's stuff because I love the past, but I'm not sure I'd want to go back to the 60s or 70s and give up the sort of office I work in today, that is clean and safe.

When I attended tech school and got my cert in secretarial duties, it was back when they were phasing out the electric typewriters,but you still learned how how to use them. Anyone else dread using the mini guillotine that was the office paper cutter? No matter how good you *thought* you had secured the device before and after using it, one small misstep or moment of inattention,and ppl were calling you Stumpy for the rest of your life.
