Gomez has played a lot of left back for Liverpool this season so I think he'd be a good choice

Tyrick Mitchell is the most in form English LB at the moment. Has been in the England set up before and is firing on all cylinders right now

Rico Lewis, Tyrick Mitchell, Rico Henry, Joe Gomez, Tino Livramento. These are guys who are available. I wouldn't take Luke Shaw or Ben Chilwell because you can't trust their fitness

Southgate could take a leaf out of Liverpool/Arsenals book. Have an un-flashy left back (Gomez) who when Engand attacks moves around and becomes a third Centre back, leaving our right back to go forward and create (Trent, Tripper, James, maybe Walker)

The problem is that Foden will probably be starting on the left and drifting inside so ideally we need a left back who will hold the width and get forward. If we do what you suggested then we need to start someone like Gordon, I wouldn’t be against that but I can’t see Southgate doing it.

@ConorF727 or you could play Gomez in a back 3 with Stones and Walker Trent & Rice in the double pivot Bellingham box to box 8 Foden Palmer and Saka in behind Kane. Trent can drop into right back making it a back 4 when needed and Bellingham slots in next to Rice

Lewis Hall does look amazing on the ball, maybe even better than Shaw and Chilwell. A lot to learn defensively though.

Mainoo over Trent in midfield is mad, one hasn’t even played a season yet, one has won everything there is to win at club level. I know he plays right back for Liverpool but a) he doesn’t really play right back and b) he’s down as a midfielder and has played there for England. A misfiled of rice, Trent and Bellingham would be insane in my opinion.

Marcus and Luke fail to explain what they expect the LB or DMC to do. Is it a DMC that progresses the ball and controls games, because Rice doesn’t do that (hence Jorginho) and very few English players actually get the opportunity (apart from Rico Lewis and John Stones)? If you play Foden on the left wing then you don’t necessarily need an overlapping fullback like Shaw or Chilwell but you need someone comfortable coming inside the pitch and defending the space

Foden will come inside so you do need someone to provide the width on the left.

@@ConorF727 Foden Bellingham Palmer Saka can all play on the left all can play on the right all can play fulse 9 with Kane dropping into the no10 role it isn't a problem

I would take Dan Burn. Even if has an option. I mean, he has the rhythm, he isn't playing bad at all. Corner for or corner against, who better to be there than him. I would start with Stones covering that position, Maguire and Branthwaite, Kyle my boy, run. If Branthwaite couldn't hack it, Burn in the left and let's close it down. Trippier on the left for what? He is gonna cross it in? No point. The LB's are all injured, live with it. Dan Burn, Left footed, 2metres tall, playing high level, no reason to cry.

Especially having this problem and having issues with trying to fit everyone in the 11 why not play a back five Saka left back Trent right have Walker Stones and prob maguire. Then u have the Trent help out in the middle of the park. Also get some balance in the team .

Shame Rico Henry is injured. As a Brentford fan, I've seen a lot from him, and I think he's long overdue a run out at this point. Shame he got such a bad injury because I think he walka into the squad atm

Mainoo looks like a Rolls Royce thus far but would largely go for the ride. Whilst Bellingham looks so mature i can't see 2 youngsters starting in midfield. Palmer has to go. Super sub when needed. Injury-wise i doubt he takes both Shaw and James. James is genuine world-class for my money. Shame if he misses out. 2 years from now we should be unstoppable with addition of quality centre backs like Branthwaite and Quansah etc. But then again it's England 😊

I'd love elliot to make it but mainoo is up for the cdm role and elliot for a more attacking role, so doubt it would be a choice between the two

Trent defending at left back, and inverting to get on the ball in midfield solves 2 problems at once. Can form a really natural 325 if you have a left cb like Colwil with experience out wide. Rico lewis and Joe Gomez can deputise for Trent

Possibly in the group stages, but I don't see Trent as defensively consistent enough for games against opposition that'll actually bring the game to us. In that scenario, I wonder if dropping Walker in there could be a viable option. He's capable of inverting from the right, so there's a chance he could quickly adapt to doing the same from the left, but if that doesn't seem to work in training quick enough, they could have him hold the fort (as we do have a wealth of creative players in other positions) and have him as a purely defensive full back. It'd be sacrificing the quality at right back somewhat, but the upside of adding quality to a position we are currently hamstrung at would probably be a worthwhile trade.

Honestly Luke comparing Mainoo to Paulinha and and Rodri is wrong. He plays in a different role compared to them, and also in a much worse team with a poorer manager than them too. Mainoo is a wonderful player, and while I may not start him for England in the Euros, I would definitely have him in the squad. Also, Luke keeps going on about Mainoo not controlling games but as Marcus has said, he would not be expected to do that for England at all! He'd be with 2 other fantastic, more experienced midfielders. It just reeks of formulating an early opinion on someone, and not wanting to change your opinion on him

Not sure on that last part. Mainoo is a very new and young player, and as he develops I’m sure Luke’s opinion of him will develop accordingly

Does Luke actually watch Mainoo play? His takes on him are constantly terrible. He’s not a defensive midfielder so why compare him to Rodri and Palhinha? He’s playing in a dysfunctional team with a manager who seemingly doesn’t know how to construct a midfield. He’s a special player and if you put him in that England team where he’ll be surrounded by better players people will be shocked at how good he is.

His point is he’d be asked to play a defensive mid role with England though, so perhaps those problems would emerge? Who knows. He’s young so might be too early to be starting at a tournament either way!

@@FootballRamble No he wouldn’t. He’d be playing alongside Rice who is much better defensively than any United midfielder. Football isn’t played on paper, just because he’d be part of the midfield two doesn’t mean it’s “defensive midfield”.
