Have His Carcase (Christopher Hodson) - Episode One

Have his carcase - the second Book of D.L.Sayers featuring Lord Peter Wimsey together with Harriet Vane - perfectly played by Edward Petherbridge and Harriet Walter. It's a four part miniseries and although it has been some time since I read the book, I think they have adapted it wonderfully. The chemistry between the ever wooing Lord Peter and the always defensive Harriet comes across beautifully.
Plot summary: Harriet stumbles across a body on the beach and notifies the police and the press. As soon as Lord Peter hears about it he comes after her to help her and the police solving the case.
A Dorothy L. Sayers Mystery - three miniseries produced by the BBC in 1987 and based on the best-selling novels: Strong Poison, Have His Carcase and Gaudy Night.
Director: Christopher Hodson
Lord Peter Wimsey is a fictional character in a series of detective novels and short stories by Dorothy Leigh Sayers. A bon vivant who solves mysteries for his own amusement, Wimsey is an archetype for the British gentleman detective.

Jumping in before I get completely immersed, just to say one of the many things I immediately appreciate is that the people responsible allowed Harriet to be as she is in the books. They didn’t ‘beautify’/ glamorise her, with bright red lipstick etc, or insist on a wardrobe not suitable to the literary character. Sir Edward Petherbridge was born to play this role, and his portrayal is admirable; his appearance, characteristics are faithful to the role. He’s such a natural, it’s a challenge sometimes to believe he’s acting at all! We feel his heart pain with him, desperately want to see his love openly returned, but the romance rejection doesn’t take over, and Lord Peter never descends to pathos, or self pity. Scripts follow the books quite well, all of the productions are faithful to the fiction, and extremely well done. I don’t disrespect Ian Carmichael’s acting, he just isn’t Wimsey for me. Thank you very much for this upload and the others. Your time and trouble are appreciated.

Of all the cultures I've visited around the planet, their history being read, British values, together with the founding of America and it's Constitution, is my favorite. Abolishment of slavery, modern democracy and parliamentarism, and sympathetic, gentlemanly attitudes, the Scottish and English Enlightenment, et c. In Victorian times the Empire was the conscience of the world introducing order, justice and progress. There are of course bad rumors, but they are highly politically motivated.

But I love shoes myself and I've got about 60 pairs :-) What I really do enjoy looking at in this series are the lovely old cars. I believe Lord Peter did have a Lagonda in the books. It is crucial to the plot, that our good Lord was able to identify the owner (the first owner, that is) of the murder weapon. It is symptomatic of the way mysteries are dramatised, however, that large gaps are (unfortunately for the viewer) left in the plot, and there's no explanation of how he knew the owner or how to find him. Perhaps the deduction was explained in the book.

High priced items from a very posh and exclusive barber's shop would be able to be traced easily. The barber would have records of the items sold to one of his very exclusive clientes , specially a fine article such as a razor . Bunter being a gentleman's footman ( and not just any gentleman, Lord Peter is a Dandy )identified immediately who had that sort of razor in London and from there it was easy.

@voraciousreader3341
@voraciousreader3341 2 года назад
Laurence Fox??? I think he’d be completely wrong! For one thing, he’s too young, and Petherbridge was far too old when these were done; if he’d been 15 years younger he would have been much better. And “Bunter” is completely miscast, to the point that I can’t watch his major scenes and have to fast forward through them! Harriet Walter was excellent, I totally agree there.
@frances6940
@frances6940 Год назад
@@voraciousreader3341Laurence Fox is 45 ( as of 2023) and Edward Petheridge was 51 in 1987 when this was filmed. Lord Peter was 45 when he married Harriet so presumably he was early to mid forties during this story. So perhaps Edward Petheridge was slightly older than ideal (but he is still my favourite Lord Peter). The timeline in the books differs from the TV series because in the books the three stories covering the courtship were spread over about 5 years ( with other investigations interspersed) whereas, in the TV series, they appear to be one after the other. I think Laurence Fox would be very suitable if they did a remake: he has an interesting face but is not conventionally handsome in a Cary Grant kind of way. Lord Peter and Harriet are both survivors of difficult life experiences and I think this is what makes the story arc so wonderful and poignant: one knows that when she finally says yes they are mature people who are making a commitment to love and cherish each other.

Many more were adapted, but only three with these actors and this budget. Ian Carmichael did some versions, but they just don’t do it for me. And it is a travesty that they never got around to these two doing Busman’s Honeymoon! Oh well. At least we have these.
@ayishas4385

Ian Carmichael starred in 5 of her 7 non-Harriet Vane LPW mysteries between 1972 and 1975: Clouds of Witness, The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, Murder Must Advertise, The Five Red Herrings, and The Nine Tailors. (The two they missed are Whose Body, though I know I've seen a movie version based on it somewhere, and Unnatural Death). Not sure why BBC chose to specifically avoid the romantic ones, but they did! When BBC decided to make the Harriet Vane ones, they intended to do all four of them, but they couldn't get rights to the last one, Busman's Honeymoon. So 10 episodes spanning just the first three were released in 1985. I did find an old b&w movie version of Busman's Honeymoon from 1940 (search for it as Haunted Honeymoon.) Nothing strongly Wimsey-ish about their Wimsey, but not a bad rendition of the overall plot.
