they don't make tories like this anymore. How sad, even as a Labour supporter I know the country is better off when we have strong and respectable parties debating the best path forward. Not this bilge water we have now from the tory government
So, it's clear. No party can reverse Brexit damage. Therefore vote for a party that you consider least tainted by corruption. HINT, it's not the Tories.
He is so spot on with everything. Nothing can be done to make up for the abortion of a decision that was Brexit. But it's not just Brexit it's the hard Brexit we have ended up with that has given this country next to no hope of any tangible growth for the foreseeable. I sincerely hope The Labour Party re-negotiate our entry into the single market as soon as possible so we can see some proper benefits before the election in 5 years time. We can then have a proper debate about re-joining the EU in the late 2030s
Always admired Patten. A man of common sense and dignity, even when dealing with difficult events such as the handover of Hong Kong. His straight-talking here should be listened to, perhaps it's time we respected experts again.
Dignity? DIGNITY! He sat next to Prince Charles at the Hong Kong handover ceremony crying like a baby! Prince Charles looked quite perplexed. I'll never forget it because it was cringeworthy and humiliating for this country.
@@kevinengland7444I really didn’t take it that way. It was genuinely emotional and called for a bit of physical emotion. 150 of thousands of shared relationships. It’s tragic
I couldn't agree more. I have never been a fan of the Conservatives, but when you look at the hollowed-out and dumbed down Conservative parliamentary party and cabinet, you wish for the days of Major and dare I say it Thatcher!
I remember Patten crying like a baby sat next to Prince Charles at the Hong Kong handover ceremony. Prince Charles looked uncomfortable and rightly so. That act alone is a luminous example of who not to allow to run a country for he utterly humiliated us on the world stage.
How very sane. And he’s right, not just about Brexit, but also that the Conservatives no longer exists. It’s now now a dangerous, right of centre and increasingly far right party. Brexit was not just a terrible mistake, was also an unpatriotic policy because of the damage it has done and is doing to our standard of living and economic prosperity.
As a 74 year old father and grandfather I am extremely concerned for the safety and future of my offspring because we have a warmongering ruling class intent to manage and control the public with fearmongering, lies and harsh laws whilst allowing themselves to be serial offenders.
In four days I will appear at Westminster Magistrates to be made a criminal for sending an offensive email to a couple of front benchers. Clean record, excellent character references and flawless work life I will be made a criminal for the audacity. No joke. This is a police state. Wake up.
Chris could have said "respect"! He enjoyed respect as party chairman as did John Major and many others! There in now currently zero respect for any of the current charlatan's ! How interesting that Chris Patten isn't afraid to mention the dreaded Brexit! Hence respect for him and it makes my prior argument!
It was well before brexit. They've always been into profits and share dividends. They don't want lowly workers to have money, that's why they make workers go on strike.
Until the stem of Brexit is faced, the UK faces a bleak time. We all know it, the evidence is in and we now owe it to our younger generations to remedy what is a self-inflicted wound.
One of the questions that will never be answered is what happened to the North Sea Oil revenues? Norway has been investing its surplus revenues and currently has a government owned fund with $1.62 Trillion! The interest currently funds more than 15% of government expenditure. The British hierarchy just peed it up the wall I guess!
It was used to break the unions, deindustrialise, and build up the financial services sectors. We're now seeing the long term effects of those policies in huge wealth inequality. A brave government would introduce a wealth and expatriation taxes which would reverse those effects very quickly.
Although he's been away from Westminster for a while, he just oozes gravitas, intellect and a thorough grasp of his brief. To think that the cabinet that was voted out in 1997 consisted almost entirely of people of this calibre...and look at the shallow shower of muppets we have now....
I don’t agree with his politics but you can’t deny he’s very learned. Contrast that with the almost dry pool of talent currently on offer in the Conservative Party. Can anyone name a cabinet minister now with any intellect?
Always hard to take seriously Tories who served under Thatcher when they bemoan the current party for being too right wing. Economically and sociall the Tory party of the 1980s was far more right wing than the current lot.
When I say I disagree with the Tory party but that you used to be able to rely on them for a steady competence, I sometimes get funny looks. But this is the kind of person that the Conservative Party should have running it - a cold calculating competent person who has the goal of steady management of the country. The current party’s obsession with culture wars and ‘stopping the boats’ just makes them look insane to me.
When the last governor of Hongkong went to HK, the Chinese economy was just shy of 430 billion USD (1992). In 2023, the Chinese GDP exceeded 17.5 TRILLION USD, or 17,520 billion USD to be precise. What is Chris Patten ranting about??! Want to see the UK GDP over that period? Plateauing, you say?
9:09 "(Keir Starmer/ Rachel Reeves) don't seem to me to be dangerous.." Are you really sure? Lord Pattern is a great guy but it sometimes puzzles me that in his speech it shows that he has some degree of preference for socialism. I am anticipating tax rising for the general public in a years time. not sure if this is considered dangerous, but definitely not something to look forward to.
Defence spending - with NATO and its allies overmatching by a fair wedge its military doctrine, spending, strategy and tactics, numbers of advanced armour, aircraft carriers and 3rd Generation aircraft…..if it came to the true crunch of non nuclear combat, what country can Russia beat, it can’t even beat Ukraine in the 14 days every so called pundit and EX general said it could. China has a king way to go. Taiwan is not Normandy 1944. The failure of the British MOD and Abbey Wood in procurement total incompetence isn’t the military but they do single handedly achieve a negative impact of fighting capacity. NATO and its other allies are unlikely to loose a convenient war. Yes it could of course but it’s unlikely and everyone knows it. Except in the case of a nuclear strike of course. Then all bets are off. How much do we End up spending 2X or 10x NATO budget of $1TN a year.
Staying in the single market but leaving the EU was the best option on the table but no one seemed to want that. However, Brexit of itself gives us back our Sovereignty, which shouldn't be underestimated in a time of difficulty, such as we find ourselves in today. We have seen sleight of hand from the incumbent government which has undermined their own credibility. Trust has been lost and they have no chance of winning it back in the near future. The best they can hope for is that businesses continue to support them after they are defeated at the next election. Personally, I think businessmen will look at alternatives after the next General Election, to sponsor.
Say there’s a point people do watch the finer points of parties political parties and we do expect better we expect honesty, integrity morals do I have to go on Tories and labour are a shambles . It’s either independent MPs or the green party or labour MPs that are standing for the right things, social housing, bringing our utilities in house, getting it out of the hands of shareholders. Building the hospitals schools it’s gonna be a long road but that is the real choices of this country. We overhauling the police root and branch building. The infrastructure of this country equipping our arm forces properly stop wasting money on IT that doesn’t work.
Tedious one-sided debate. The US covered Europe's defence but that's coming to an end. So, they are all scrabbling around trying to justify increased spending on defence. The comparison he made between imported Chinese goods and Russian energy was ridiculous in the extreme.
If Boris Johnson had done what was asked of him to get Brexit done this country would be in a better state than it is in now conservatives fault ,not Brexit
Brexit was sold on the basis of lies by charlatans who did not understand the consequences which have been so disastrous for every aspect of our society. Surely everyone realises now that Brexit could never have worked and the Tories are responsible.
This ladies and gentleman. Is a conservative. I can disagree with this man around policy and party. I can't disagree with integrity. The current tory crop. Thats a different matter
