I find it funny that the Brazilian dudes look like little Abercrombie models, and still felt they were being judged lol. I LOVE that they were honest about the racism in their country. Some Brazilian people downplay it. When the Azerbaijan girl said they treat races the same, he pulled the mic away slowly like he didn't buy it! lolol

lol right. I'm native korean and I'm 100% sure that korea is a racist country. but it is not only discriminating someone by their race but at the same time we admire and worship other races. it's our(koreans') almost first generation who are having foreigners(or different race) around in real life. therefore we've never educated and practiced yet. I think it is more like we're in panic to see people who don't look like us, act like us and think like us(as you might know our way of thinking is very limited). as my generation figure out and practice, we will get better quick.

I feel you, I am black too and I actually want to study abroad in South Korea. Not all Koreans treat black people and other POC badly, so dont worry too much or have a negative view of the country or its people as a whole :) I am penpals with some Korean people and at first some of the didnt want to talk to me or said things that were racist/prejudice because of stereotypes they have in korea against POC. However once I told them more about black people and how certain things are only stereotypes, we were able to become close.

If you don't understand why racism exists, you probably should look into human psychology. It's to do with humans having the inert need to categorize everything to a set of characteristics and prejudices to build expectations of behavior. Categorization has always played a big role in human survival. What's more efficient: Categorizing all spiders as a potential threat, or treating non-venomous spiders and venomous spiders as different individuals, having to estimate their behavior/effect as per individual? I'm not saying broad categorization/racism is a good byproduct of our human function(categorization), I'm just saying that it's inevitable with the way our brains are wired.

Actually we surprisingly got privileged because we were foreigners in Korea. We did see a truck with black face on it, we talk to the truck owner about it(in broken korean) and my friend even cried. So she hid the black face. Once she did clients started coming. We were so happy to see that when the blackface was on the truck, koreans were boycotting the food truck.

+Soru1984 do you even know what black face means? I doubt it.
@steper471
@steper471 8 лет назад
Blackface is the term used to describe someone who isn't black or dark skinned from birth, putting on makeup to look like a black person and making a comical show out if it to pick on the fact that they have dark skin. It comes from white racist ideas and entertainment tropes in the early years of hollywood in the US, white people would put on dark makeup and emphasize stereotypes about Black people in the US, and how low they thought of them to make the audience laugh who at the time was comprised of all white people. So yes, what you said is actually the wrong description.You're talking about something completely different.
@preettyE
@preettyE 8 лет назад
Soru1984 now that it's been explained to you maybe you'll learn not to be so defensive over things you may not understand. You're probably not African American so you didn't know. You could have just asked for an explanation without being so patronizing and thinking people are always randomly calling others racist.
@childkc
@childkc 8 лет назад
Maybe your confused... they didnt use a actual black person's face, they used the face of a non black person and put brown skin on top of the white skin... A;so they use the words ''black person'' because you dont know if they are african or african american or even Jamaican or something. For example if you someone sees an (east) Asian person but maybe they don't know if they are Chinese, or Japanese, or Korean so, they refer to them as ''Asian'' so they dont refer to them as something they arent. To use the word ''black person'' is just a way to refer to them because you dont know where they are from, not define them by a color. Lets all try to understand each other and not misunderstand :)

I'm also a Korean but it's a problem that most Koreans are reluctant to reflect on or talk about the reality of the nation's racism. They are busy passing the blame to other countries. When asked by foreigners if there is racism in Korea, Koreans usually say "yes but more in western countries!" You can easily find plenty of examples on this comment page.

I'm Italian and when I spent 20 days in Korea I didn't experience any kind of racism, maybe because most of the time I was with my boyfriend who is korean, I only noticed people staring at us, but it just looked like they were curios. As an European I agree with the guys from Britain and Denmark, immigration is a hot topic in Europe nowdays. Because of terrorism episodes It's like there's a new kind of racism which is not based on skin colour but more on the country where you are from. In Italy there are a lot of african war refugees and there are a lot of prejudices against them, not because they're black, but just because they're from Africa. Anyway, interesting interview.

I don't know how it is like in Korea but I've met a lot of Koreans who live in the United States who just came from Korea. They are not really "racist" or anymore racist than any white or East Asian people usually are. They are very nationalistic however. There certainly are more important things than just "countries" especially when you live in a multi cultural state. When I was in high school, my korean classmates would constantly start war about the island dispute with their Japanese friends and the Japanese friends would shrug it off and say "dude it's just an island, go talk to our politicians about it not us". And of course they will say something about the Chinese not dressing fashionably enough.

chanmi xenophobia. You sure that's the case for when an ethnic group thinking they're superior to another? It's weird because since they're the same race, there are quite a lot of ultra-nationalistic koreans who will do anything to argue that Chinese people are a totally different race from the koreans judging by the head shape and all.

There are a lot of discriminations exist in here 한국은 '아주 강한 차별주의' 국가이다. 심지어 그들은 국민들끼리 차별을 한다. 갑과 을 (직장에서), 남자와 여자, 노인과 청년 등 아주 많은 차별이 존재한다.

(Please Keep in mind that I am Korean.) I lived in LA and San Diego for 9 years, and when I went back to Korea, the place I was born in, I got so many colorist remarks about my skin tone. I couldn't walk down the street without being stared at, and my friends at school started to become more and more colorist. (Passively, of course.) It was hella depressing, but the thing that really made me curious was the fact that the kids in my class really loved black artists like Beyoncé, yet they made fun darker skin tones. My 8 year old brother, older sister, and I all got tan in America, and we all faced colorist remarks. My relatives made fun of us for a little bit (all in good fun), but eventually grew out of it. However, there were many occasions when my brother came home crying because of the other kids making fun of him for being darker skinned. But my brother was too young to handle it on his own. However, what I did was be proud of my skin tone and tell stand up for myself, in comparison to my brother, who kind of shrunk back whenever they made fun of him. So, my suggestion is, if you're going to Korea, take some pride into your skin tone and stand up for yourself if someone's being racist or colorist to you.

hi guys, ive been watching a lot of videos like yours. and in some of the videos i came across, some koreans mentioned that they dont like filipinos. i'd really like to know why they look down on south east asians (indonesians, thais, vietnamese ,malaysians, filipinos, etc), what could be the reasons? ive watched other blogs who have mentioned about it, and the only reason i could get is mainly because these are poor countries therefore most of them are uneducated?, so they get discriminated a lot. are there any other reasons? reasons like for example, based on history, culture etc.? i do see a lot of koreans here in the philippines to improve their english speaking skills or to learn english, do they still think we are uneducated? im really curious. i posted this question on other related videos too, one korean commented and said, those who go to the philippines are losers and poor, and cannot compete with other koreans that's why they go to undesired places, i was like, UNDESIRED PLACES???? is that even true?

In October 2018, a Sri Lankan worker made flying a sky lantern around a large oil storage tank in Korea. The lantern fell beside of a oil tank, causing a massive explosion and tens of millions of dollars in damage. The South Korean police arrested the Sri Lancan and trid to jail him, but there was huge public opinion from all Koreans that was caused the management fault of the storage tank, not from the Sri Lankan. He was released and wept saying thank you over and over. Is this Korean racism? You can the news abou the fire disaster on ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jfSnCrkzupc.html Almost of Korean is not racist. A few bad man can be a racist. But you need to understand normal Korean has nothing to do with racism against South Asian. I am sure the fake news is made and spread by some Japanese who hates Korean. I think Japanese are real racist who ignore other Asian. and they are saying Japanese is not Asian, Japan is just Japan, not Asian. lol

As what TedEdtalks says, Skin Color is our ancestor's adaptation to deadly sun rays called ultra violet rays, the further we are at the equator, the less sun rays we get, so the less melanin we need, the lighter the skin. The skin is not something should be disgusted for. Skin color is not the base of our personality and beauty, it is rather a fascinating adaptation that helps the human species survive in warmer climates. This is not something to be prejudiced for, but something to be thankful for. Without the melanin in our skin, humans living on warmer places will die of skin cancer. Please remember that skin is not identity but rather adaptability.

I don't think its racism in Korea but I think it is more of curiosity and lack of exposure/knowledge to some ethnicities. Of course there will be some racism, but in general not really as much compared to Japan. Koreans shouldn't be racist though, because they should know how it feels to be treated that way. In Japan there where specific stereotypes and racism against Filipinos, Chinese, and Koreans. Koreans and Chinese are treated a little bit better now though. It is really sad. Some of them really look down on you and it is blatant racism and discrimination like for example in my experience in a restaurant and in my hotel. if they see you are a certain ethnicity they feel they're above you and they think you cant ask them to do something for you/or they will refuse to do it even if you're a customer. I am not an insecure person and I have never experienced discrimination before, but some of them really will make you feel less than. In any case, where ever you are everyone needs to be treated the same, as people, as human beings, with respect. Racism and discrimination is not okay.

My question for you would be "do you think there is racism in Korea"? I also think that there may be a difference in how people from different countries define racism, like that last interviewee said. As a black American racism primarily means, to me, being discriminated against because of the color of my skin. I recognize that in other countries racism manifests itself in the form of anti immigration beliefs, in America also.

I would argue that Koreans are racist and nationalistic, but as many have stated before - and there are a bunch of videos where RU-vidrs account their own racist encounters in Korea - this racism has a particular abrasive, destructive aspect. It's blatant and hurtful, more so than I've personally ever encountered in countries such as France, Germany, or the United States, since in those countries, racism might stem from a feeling of superiority which leads to some individuals patronizing and belittling people of another cultural or ethnic background. That racism, in a way, is more passive or opportunistic. In Korea, however, it's as though you are encountering your long-time frenemy or some douchebag who's hated you for years. There's no covering up of any sort when it comes to showing disgust to foreigners in Korea. Now, I need to emphasize that the vast majority of Koreans are not racist at all, but those 10 - 20 % kind of ruin the image. It's mostly ajeossis, men in their 40's to 60's, who will make sure to show just how much they despise foreigners. It can be overt and lead to assault (just watch any of the many RU-vid videos that describe these encounters) or more subtle, such as staring you down with a grim face and then, as you pass them, spit on the ground in front of your feet. It may be that you are sitting in a library studying, and an ajeossi keeps looking at you with disgust, and he will then start calling someone with his cellphone and proceed to have a loud conversation, while making sure that I notice it. When then another Korean lady came to sit down where we were sitting and she gave him a dirty look, he stopped the phone call immediately and seemed a little bit embarrassed about the inconvenience he had caused (her). Now, where does this stem from? My opinion is that Koreans have a general sense of inferiority. They do feel inferior and frankly, it's understandable if you have a look at Korean history. The country has been but a vassal state for China basically since its inception, when the three kingdoms joined together, only to be subsequently conquered by Japan and turned into a colony for almost four decades, during which every imaginable step was taken to annihilate Korean culture and identity. This was followed by a devastating war that left the Korean peninsula in misery and poverty. The division of the country might have been the last straw on the camel's back to crush any feeling of national self-worth or pride. This being South Korea's starting point, within two generations, they were able to escape poverty through hard work and persistence. But what will always be stinging in a Korean person's heart is how Japan, after committing all those war crimes, easily surpassed Korean in virtually any aspect you can think of - in terms of economy, standard of medical care, standard of living, political power, technological innovation and scientific advancement, and even in terms of culture, as anybody who has ever been to Japan will acknowledge that country's cultural uniqueness and distinction from, say, China. The same cannot be said about Korea and Koreans desperately look for measures to distance themselves from Chinese cultural supremacy, that is stemming from a Millenia of dominance in East Asia. Everytime a ajeossi is overtly aggressive, it's not difficult to see that this might originate from the deeply rooted sense of inferiority. It's not logical and in my opinion, there's no intelligent reason to define oneself by her or his nationality anyway, but rather by one's own achievements in life, as trivial as they might appear.

this video is so biased. blacks are discriminated against more than whites in korea. it doesnt really make sence to interview a group that experiences mild racism. i have friends (blacks and whites) who have taught english in South Korea. my black friends experienced the worst kind of racism compared to my white friends. my white friends actually did confirm it. i was actually heart broken when i realized how racist korea is after communicating with friends who were already there. obviously racism is everywhere but then we look at the majority population. koreans don't even hide their racism.I've seen several scenes in Koren drama and movies depicting black people as thieves and rapists. I've read in blogs where blacks narrate their personal experiences in korea and just a few find it okay to continue living there.

I am a Korean man. Korea's development was fast but civic consciousness was not, it is true that it is only kind to Western-looking people like most East Asians and discriminates against others. appreciate that Korean culture is receiving attention, but it is also our responsibility to reflect on ourselves and clean up the trash. ashamed to say this, but Korean women are also mocked as 'kfc' in other countries and use their gender as a weapon. If you have a face that you prefer in East Asia, it doesn’t matter! you can get a free pass on Korean women
