Why is skin color so important to Koreans? Do you think incorporating more multicultural people in movies and dramas will change views about other cultures?
@@elangbam3115 There is a famous RU-vidr named Megan Moon. I think she said something similar. Most unfortunate experiences are caused by wrong places and people. For example, don't expect to meet a good person at a club or a specific chat application. Such a place is not a place to meet reliable people in Korea. The most common way to meet someone in Korea is a blind date (sogae-ting). Because the person introduced by a close friend is basically reliable and can meet responsibly. Of course, life is not known. There are many international couples in Korea these days. Basically, we have to be careful about meeting people from any country, but we need a lot of courage and confidence wisdom.

i am a Korean. i moved to the US when I was 13-year-old to study. let me tell you. racism can destroy one's soul permanently. it saddens me to watch my own people are exercising racism in Korea, and this must be addressed seriously (via broader education). i still sometimes dream of white and black kids walk up to me, calling me chink, gook, ching-chang-chong, etc. I wake up in cold sweat with aggressive thoughts of pulling machines at him.
I'm Korean and I hate racism. I never discriminate and mock foreigners regardless of their races. It is so sad that there are some foreigners who experienced racism in S.Korea. It is a huge shame and people must stop hating. We all live in a same planet and share emotions as a human being. I wish the foreigners who live in S.Korea had great times. I welcome you guys :)
Most Koreans say they never discriminate against foreigners on a survey as you, but sadly it's different in real life. Many don't realize that they do. It's because Korea is one of the most homogeneous countries in the world. That's why we have to keep this in mind.
You will regret letting too many Africans into your country. I am American. Look what they did to Detroit, Cleveland, Baltimore, New Orleans, St. Louis and Chicago. These cities were entirely built by white people to be some of the most wealthy cities in history but after a migration from the south they became murder dens. Black males commit 85% of America's shootings. Do not believe what you see on TV.

Everyone was so kind. I especially loved how the girl from Turkey wanted to make sure people knew about her positive experience. I think it's amazing her mindset of adapting to where she is living even to the point of making sacrifices (like with food etc ) but it's touching that some people meet her halfway with kindness. The African guy- what a legend! , love his mentality as well, " no risk, no biscuit". I'm remembering that one. Thanks for your hard work in these interviews :)

I am South Korean and thanks a lot for sharing all of your stories. As a Korean living in the US, I try every day not to be a racist myself since I also can be a victim here, and this video a lot to think about it. Thanks.

Being black I can tell you.. My experience in Korea was brilliant! I took my mum and sister on the trip.. I remember this one moment when we both went out and it started raining we both had been at two separate places and I was making my way back to the hotel and this lovely man came out of his store as i was walking by realising it was raining He just brought out an umbrella and gave it to me out of nowhere and refused to take any money of me .. he was trying to tell me something in Korea, along the lines “don’t get soak” he didn’t want any money for it.. got to the hotel and wanted to just share my experiences only to realise that my mum or my sister had the same experience with a different person altogether! randomly just given them an umbrella on the street because it was raining I thought that was such a lovely moment and it says a lot about Korean people hospitality.

Thank you for your video. I am in Korea for the first time. I am of African origin and I can truly say that people here have been very nice, both young and old. I have used the subway many times and no one stood up or avoided sitting next to me. I will definitely visit Korea again.
Thanks for that as I was thinking of cancelling my trip, but I'm hearing positive experiences so I'll brave it an go. Anyone who makes comments about my dark skin I'll try to just view it as ignorance.
@Bex A trust me. Korea is an easy country to visit. You'll experience racism and prejutism in the western countries more than you will in Korea IMO. Lol just remember that racism exists everywhere and that you should learn to ignore the ignorant/racist people sometimes. I know I have. I have a fair amount of experience with racism myself living in Canada since 1994 lol
There‘s no special reason not to sit in an empty seats. I just don’t like sitting around with other people. (Shoulders touching the person next to me) If it‘s not a saturated subway, you can see most people sitting with empty seat in between😂
I lived in korea for 5 years, and yes, there is a racism but i don't care. as long as i can communicate with them, making friends, for me i think no problem at all.
I loved this video but I appreciate Jin so much for pointing out that those Koreans knew that word was racist. I've seen too many times where people justify Koreans using that word or doing other racist things by saying "they don't know it's racist". They 100% do I'm so happy that Jin made them accountable for those actions! ☺️☺️
Yes even bacj in the past. People let it go just because they are delusional fans and their celebrities "can do no wrong" they make all the excuses for them and then hate on other artist for because they are more real. So much for love yourself. Motto should be love us, hate others
@@LOCNL0ADED the fact that I know EXACTLY what you're talking about 👏👏 it's sad actually. Still haven't received a verbal apology but we're supposed to just accept company apologies.
I’m sure many Korean don’t know what that word means or that it’s racist. Most people who know are mostly who fluent in English and AWARE to American culture. And many people know it recently from BLM movement. In my country if the foreigner is white we call them ‘bule’ and if they’re black we call them ‘negro’ but sometimes also bule. And it’s surprised me that those words are insults words. But We don’t have any bed intentions, it’s just how it is
Jin is so sympathetic , the questions and answers make me smile 🙂 . We need something positive , the guy from west Africa was so honest with him . I liked it a lot .
I'm a black American and I lived in South Korea, while serving in the military 40 years ago. I've met so many wonderful, wonderful loving people (in over 5 years) that I couldn't count them. Yes there were a couple of fools (being called a dog, monkey, donkey) but being black (just to be honest),you become used to some racism anyway. Racial Ignorance, is really by the person and never the people.
Thanks for sharing these experiences. I'm a New Zealand Samoan so it'll be interesting to see how I'm received when I travel to Korea next week for the first time.🤔 Really helpful to get these insights before my trip. Blessings! 🙏
Sorry, this is going to be a novel, as I returned home from Korea last week and forgot to provide an update as promised! I had an awesome time there visiting friends and being a tourist BUT I'd recommend learning basic Korean because most people don't speak English, even in Seoul. I was travelling on my own to Gwangju/Sejeong and then Busan when a train derailed the night before, so there were lots of delays. None of the announcements were in English so I had to ask for help with understanding. The men and older women were helpful even though they spoke little/no English, but the younger females (mid-20s?) generally brushed me off. I stayed in six hotels while there, and the service was great at all but one of them. That was probably the only time that I thought it was because of my ethnicity, but it also could've been because I was a female (I was served by an older male). While at the subway stations a couple of people asked me if I was from Vietnam or Singapore, so maybe I was viewed as someone from another Asian country as opposed to a New Zealand Samoan. Whenever I spoke a few people would stare at me, particularly in Daejeon and Gwangju (not popular tourist destinations). Overall, I didn't feel discriminated against because of my race but I was with my Korean friends a lot of the time so it made a difference in my experiences. Either way, I really enjoyed it there and I'll return to Korea in the future!🇳🇿🇰🇷😊
To be fair there is racism everywhere. Even in my country (South Africa) the Asians are sometimes treated in a disrespectful way. But I like that it's getting better. Sounds like most Koreans either don't act on their racism or are not racist. I doubt we will ever completely get rid of racism.
You do understand that South Africa, at 1/6 the size of the United States, commits more homicides than the USA and more than 2/3 of all homicides in America are also committed by blacks of African descent, right? Nigeria had four times more homicides than America. We're smarter than you. We notice patterns in the places we built by the new arrivals who can not understand civilization.
Yes, that’s true it won’t go away because of sin, sin is what leads to racism, the Bible says hatred is a sin and it is the same as murder, so people do it willingly knowing full well that they are wrong, that’s how it is with every sin, we must actively forsake them or we can choose to continue living in sin and eventually dying in it and winding up in hell. The elderly are very polite. I have had many discussions with older men who have learnt a little English. Racism discriminating people with color is in most parts of world It will take time for people to understand external appearance has nothing to do in how we treat a person I come from casteic indian society It's more complicated than racism 😊 All I could say is treat others as how you want others to treat you
As A Vietnamese, I heard from other Vietnamese that Korean often have racist sights with VNese, and they usually consider themselves as the " above class" to others. But it is so different for me, I have been workjng with some Korean partners at variety of ages. They are so far so good now, no racism sight when I say I am from VN. I think I lucky since it have not happened to me, at least in front of my face 😁
I think You can ask to Korean, how much native Korean Fans Of "New Jeans" one of member HANI was from Vietnam, so they still racist while known one of member popular group K-pop from other Country?
I loved how chill and open the African man was with his experiences. Even though he might have had faced serious racism, he just presented it in a very lighter way still not blaming those people and ofc his message at the end was lit. A man with such a rainbow and sunshine personality.
I personally think all countries are learning to adapt because of diversity and all and Korean people are also learning which is pretty cool. Love your interviews so good work👍
The audience of K pop and k drama tends to glorify Korea as utopia but it’s not …. I was so happy when itaewon class address some major issues that black people face especially the night club issues and job issues
@Jk keep lying to yourself…..I have been a fan of k drama for 17 good years and I know what I am talking about…. Every year do u know the number of people who go to Korea because of their imagination of Korea been portrayed as utopia in dramas 🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨later when they go and they don’t see everything as perfect as it is …. They start bashing Korea … audience of k fan just have to know that everything isn’t as perfect as it is… it’s just a drama
@Jk Oh please. For too many times I've seen proud korean patriots use their broken english to fight off foreign forces presenting bad images of Korea. You can see some even in this comment section too. Hell looks like you're not taking this guy's criticism well either. K-dramas do tend to fantasize life in Korea. Especially romance ones. Every single actors and actresses look super handsome and pretty, their "low income" rents are super spacious, clean and cozy, etc. I'm not saying that's wrong or anything but I'm saying that's just way it is, and it surely can ingest over-expectation for foreigners who've never been to Korea. And you shouldn't expect the foreign audiences to watch every korean genre just because they like some of them. Squid game and parasite have very different taste compared to romance drama.
@Jk didn't you... literally say kpops and kdrama never glorifies korea up there? Plus no one is blaming anyone of anything or calling something bad here. Get yourself together man!
Jin, I love the way you interview people, particularly foreigners.I'm a lover of language and an Indian author with 16 published works in English. My love to Korea.
Im korean and Im sure that the racism in korea depends on the where they are came from, the reason why they have come to Korea, and ignorance of the security system of korea, not by skin color. First, Korean language is hard to learn for foreigners so most of them usually hang with people who came from the same country and korean easily find out where the foreigners are came from with their languages or lifestyles. These groups easily become a target of racism especially if they are from countries who have good relationships with north Korea such as China Venezuela (Recently Russia as well) then they would experience Racism with high probability because of their nationality. But if they came from Western Europe or USA or countries that helped south korea in the korean war(old korean really like Colombians), it’s really hard to experience racism beacuse of their nationalities. Second, It’s hard to get a nice job in korea for foreigners because of language. So many of the jobs for foreigners are illegal, and employers who employed those people knows that they can’t get help of Korean government. Third, I think foreigners don’t know that most of place even in the old building or forest in korea is being recorded by security cameras and black boxes of cars(Most of cars even that made in 1990’s have black boxes). That is why most of Korean don’t touch other person’s stuffs on the street nor try illegal things even nobody watches them. But foreigners don’t know this fact and some of them do illegal stuffs on the streets. Such as rape, murder, drug dosing or even kicking or urinating over the car or public stuffs that most of Korean don’t try. I know it is not because koreans are good and foreigners are bad. But they should know they are living in the world similar with the novel, 1984. Although we are not living in a facist country like that novel. Our law enforcement knows what everyone did in korea except inside houses. Many koreans fear foreigners who don’t fear law enforcement of korea.

Just stumbled upon your channel Jin. Loved this video, and the calm and sensitive way you interview your subjects. All the foreigners in the video were so nice and insightful, and Mr Ahmadou from Liberia had such a wonderful message for all of us at the end. Discriminating between peoples on the basis of colour, race, religion, language and even food habits is part of human nature. I guess it’s probably hardwired into our DNA right from the time our forebears were hunter-gatherers and probably stems from a fear of the unknown. I live in one of the most diverse and pluralistic countries on earth (India), and must admit that discrimination and prejudice do exist here, within our society (and not just based on caste), despite millennia of coexistence. As long as there are people like you, highlighting these important issues in a thought provoking way, there is hope for us all! 😊 Keep up the good work.
I am Korean. Some Koreans practice racism, but it is getting better. Korea developed rapidly and became an advanced country, but their culture could not keep up with the pace of economic development. Please wait a moment. Koreans will not disappoint you.
Keepit that way. Korea is great because of koreans values not because of western multiculturalism which will turn your country into a massive shithole, look at UK, Germanistan and Angola(aka France)
I discovered your channel by accident. Thank you for the topics you chose and for your presentation. Our 2023 travel destinations include Korea and Japan. I was worried about what kind of country we would encounter. We live in Istanbul, Turkey. The promotion of Korea and Japan is very active here. Consulates and Cultural organizations organize a lot of events and these pre-travel events help us to understand your culture. Due to our proximity to Europe as a country, we travel to Europe a lot and we do not experience adaptation problems. Racism is a general problem. There will be more or less such people in every country, just like good and bad habits. These racist attitudes are often not representative of countries as a whole. At least for Europe and America, we experienced this and made good friends and good memories. As a matter of fact, we see differences such as race, religion and language as a factor that develops them and we focus on people independent of this. We were interested in these cultural promotions for distant Asian countries, and we created a travel plan. Apart from cultural promotion, we needed information about how to treat people who are just starting to open up to the world, and your videos were useful in this sense. Although my communication and human relations concerns continue, I decided that I should challenge this feeling with your videos. I hope our Korea trip will be a good acquisition for us and we can create happy memories🙏☺️
Ahmadou (the guy from Liberia) looks like an enlightened soul.🙏🙏🙏 Respect from India🙏 If possible, please do interviews of only Asians too. I'm talking particularly about India, Nepal, Pakistan, Srilanka, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
As a Korean, what I want to say is ignore those who discriminate because your race is different. They're just idiots who don't see the world wide... And I hope that racism will be eliminated not only in Korea but also in other countries... How lonely and sad the (racism)wounds in other countries are😢
@@kyohiromitsu4010 Also as a Korean, it its too different to be racist. I think they just refuses to say hello to strangers, but the more individualistic cities are, I also felt this experience in NYC and Tokyo.

I'm glad there are people like this guy who are asking these questions. This is the best way of fighting all stereotypes and such. Almost every country has racists, and we cannot in any way blame a country for those people. For example, my hometown has quite a number of Asians (Chinese) and when you get there and see them for the first time, u keep staring at them. I'm sure no one would be comfortable while being stared at but it's just natural. I cannot call that racism rather refer it as CURIOCITY. But as we live along, we get used to each other. I like how they respond to the questions. Thank u for sharing

As a foreigner the only racism I experienced in Korea was not being allowed to enter some clubs because I’m not Korean, and by a few taxi drivers who stopped to offer me a ride but then refused when they saw me up close and could see that I’m a foreigner.
Many people run away if they can't speak English. I recommend you to use the app when you take a taxi. Using the app, you will arrive at the expected time of arrival at the exact price. And club restrictions are really discrimination. The same Koreans are also restricted from entering. I've seen a lot of things happen, including dress code, visuals, and age restrictions. And there are many big cases of foreigners in some clubs, so they ask for understanding and restrict foreigners. But that is also discrimination.

as to the white skin topic here in Italy some of my "pale" friends get discriminated sometimes~ people often assume they are sick or drug addicts ( so doctor think they "deserved" to feel sick) just because they are pale.
I am an International Relations consultant in London and I have a few South Koreans working in my department, the thing they often say that makes them the happiest working in the West is the whole lack of “respect for hierarchy” that they have back home. They say so many talented people end up completely dead in the background because they have to put their ideas off so to respect older people. I have to say, respecting the elderly is one thing, but respecting hierarchy is completely bullsh*t.
The Turkish guy said Koreans don't like getting tanned because of getting dark skin. He's a bit ignorant, he failed to look at the bigger picture. I can't blame them, suntanning is not healthy, it destroys skin, causes premature aging and increases chances of skin cancer. Even with heavy sunscreen on, deliberate suntanning is not healthy and all derms studies advise against it.
This was a very enlightening but not surprising video. Unfortunately racism is everywhere. I always feel like it’s the other person’s issue not mine and as long as there is no physicality to the situation I don’t pay much mind to it . However, if the opportunity presents itself to have an open discussion, then I will use it. Racism is usually based on pre-conceived notions and lack of knowledge. I don’t like to be told how to think and my goal is not necessarily to change other people’s minds but to give them other perspectives to consider. I’ve found that a civil discussion works in many situations.

I wish more westerners would see this, I see so many people generalizing Koreans like they’re very racist in general, but the truth is that things are more nuanced there, of course there will be a number of bad people, but there are several good people as well, and like in most places in the world the youngest generation seems to lean more tolerant and liberal
I'm not sure if he'll see this message, but I would like to convey this to him: To the gentleman from Turkey who shared his unpleasant experience in the subway. I'm not familiar with the exact circumstances and atmosphere when he found himself surrounded, but it's a known fact that many Koreans tend to avoid sitting next to others. I'm not sure of the reasons behind this, but it's a custom that has been observed up until now. If it was a cultural misunderstanding, I'd love to see it cleared up.
I experienced racism in Thailand by Koreans, in my company Korean boss and manager are very rude, they yelled at me and told me to go back home when they pissed of and don't like my outfit, every times when my manager she doesn't get what she wants like a documents from the local government even though she knew that the documents would take 20 days to finished, she still pissed off and said "THAILAND ONLY". They are also working in Thailand with a wrong type of visa. The Koreans boss and manager are look down on Thais, they said 500-600 THB is enough for you guys, imagine you speak 3 languages but get paid that low wages. Finally, my 3 co-workers and I quit from that company because they didn't pay the salary in exact number following the probation contract. But I do met a good Korean customers too, only the customers are nice not a Korean boss.

After watching the video, I subscribed the channel coz it is showing some ground reality.... not like other channels just portraying the fantasy... but I am surprised after seeing the number of subscribers this channel have... it forced me to remember one thing that people want to live in their fantasy only coz truth is not Sweet... kudos to your efforts... respect from 🇮🇳.. I hope people will change their mind and behaviour everywhere... 🇮🇳 🤝 🇰🇷
I experience racisms during my visit in Korea too. Trying to pull my hijab away and im siting in an empty train but they said i cannot sit but just as these people say, i would rather focus on a good thing. A lot of Korean are kind and helpful. Some afraid i would get lost and guide me to the hostel i booked. Kind old man. I just wanna say, in every country there's always a bad apple. Even in my own country, i know there's a lot of racist but it up to you how you're making that experience to be. One person being bad to you wasn't equivalent to the whole country being bad to you but one thing for sure, you will be safest if you're white or white passing. That's for sure in every country.
