Have You Homeschooled Enough?

I'm answering your homeschooling questions. Today's question is "How do you discern you've done 'enough'?" What a great question. I'm not sure you can know for someone else, so learning to know for yourself is going to be crucial. What are your goals and priorities? Once you know those, it will be clearer when you've done 'enough'. But one word of advice when you are assessing if you've met your goals or not is to determine when you will evaluate. Some choose yearly or quarterly through tests, others it's an intuitive feeling of knowing when to pivot to realign daily and monthly work to your goals.

Thanks for this!! I’ve found in my billion years homeschooling that every year changes so dramatically we’re always reinventing the wheel. BUT it’s a blessing to be with my kiddos!!!!

I admire you so much and the all the work you have put into educating your children. One in a while, I come back into your channel to be inspired. I found you during the beginning of my homeschooling journey when I only had 1 kid and a baby. Now, few years into homeschooling, and having 4 kids and a baby with special needs, I ask myself the same question if I am doing enough. I appreciate your answer and totally agree with you. We need to learn what our values are and what our priorities are. You speak with so much wisdom. And I appreciate you replying to people's comments. Oh my! Where do you get the time to do all you want to do in a day? You're super efficient and I enjoy learning from you. I wish someday I can sit across from the table with you and have tea. I always come away watching your video feeling inspired! Sending you warm wishes all the way from Canada!

Aww what a beautiful comment! Thank you! I’m still trying to figure out where the self doubt of “am I doing enough” comes from. I do think our inner voices need to be cleansed of destructive influences so we can trust ourselves when we have done enough and when we have not done enough. That inner work takes time! Being with others on this journey certainly helps. I hope you have a supportive homeschool group you can share with and learn with so that this journey is enhanced and strengthened.

Thank you for this! We have been through several ups and downs . I’ve noticed I go through phases of embracing our natural rhythm and interest to trying to make sure I am keeping up.

You are so welcome! Keep up the good work. It does need tuning now and again which you seem to be managing beautifully Ma’sha’Allah

“Teaching to the samples” is exactly how we felt in our homeschooling with a charter. Realigning with our values and instincts is about where we are now. My child has ADHD along with other challenges, and it became apparent that a charter was not a good fit.

I see we experienced some similarly things and I’m glad you are on track to something that works better for your family 🙌🙌

Yes I understand. It’s a risk when you do something outside of the norm. It’s a big task to raise and educate children.

I am having the same issue how to have fun and freedom but still learn!! I tried it and my daughter fell way behind failing the state test!! We went back teaching the way public does it sux but what do we do!!! Plus I’m low income and can’t buy every curriculum to see which one is fun + learning

Yes that can be discouraging when you test and find that a student has fallen behind. I’ve been told of some research collected on California students in public school verses Waldorf charters and they have found that up until about grade 5, public school, kids, test higher than Waldorf charter students. Then at about grade 5 and six it’s the same, then, by grade 7 and eight the Waldorf charter students are testing higher than the public school counterparts.

Thank you for sharing! I’m wondering, did you continue with the charter but made sure you stayed true to your vision of homeschool or did you decide to do it all independently? This is the exact dilemma I’m facing. The funds are amazing but I don’t want to feel like I’m just checking the boxes for the sake of meeting state standards. How do you maintain resolve and confidence in your vision of education?
