Because back in the 70’s we had to have PSA’s for parents not to be assholes to their kids.

As a child of the 70s, this played non stop on tv. My mom was a horrible mother, dad died when I was a baby. I swore to myself that I would be a better parent when I had kids. I sometimes drive my son crazy, telling him I love him and proud of him a few times a day. 😄 I broke the cycle of abuse.

Seeing the little girl ask "Did I do something wrong?" made me cry.

‘She’s a person just like you’ kills me everytime. Yikes.

I showed this and the “It’s 10pm, do you know where your children are?” PSA’s to my kids. They can’t believe our parents actually had to have these aired on TV.

When the "did I do something wrong" travels into adulthood and you are constantly asking people if they are mad at you

There's a reason Boomer parents needed this video. Dad thought paying bills was affection. Mom thought the phone was more important than the kids.

Boomers being told to hug their kids, not just so the children need physical affection, but so the parents will feel good. This explains so much about Boomers and Gen X.

If a parent needs to watch an ad in order to think of their child.. then it's fair to say they don't love their child

Yes, when we were small, they had to be reminded to hug us, and when we were teens, they had to be asked if they knew where we were at 10pm And people wonder why Gen X invented grunge. 😂

And those kids put them in a Nursing Home. Giving them love, love, love, love.

Remember folks the boomers were raised by a generation that came back from WW2 in tatters. PTSD was rampant but nobody talked about it. Boomers grew up with abusive alcoholic parents (mostly dads) and moms who had to pretend life was perfect. The result? Boomers who had no clue how to be parents and instead dove into careers, tasks and hobbies to deal with their lack of empathy. Work was their primary focus of their lives because after all, working until 2:00 AM to get ahead and show devotion to the company. Ever wonder why boomers worked until they die and somehow equate this with heroism? Here ya go. Meanwhile GenX had to rebuild our country while working for tyrannically bad bosses. So, here we are. Looking at a throwback PSA to when GenX was at home alone (latchkey kids) watching cartoons and this ad came up and the parents weren’t even home. Can you tell I’m a bit upset? Hah.

As a child of the 70s and 80s, I won't deny running around the house singing, "Shut up, kid, you're in the way. I'm so mad I could slap your face"! I could see the dad's face in my mind like it was yesterday.

Dang my mom was born in 1945 and she never needed an ad to remind her to be physically affectionate with us. I sure do miss her.

ah, when all else fails, you can always communicate to a boomer through their preferred medium of broadcast television

Growing up, this played at least 15 time per hour during daytime TV...especially on KET. As grade schoolers, we created at least 8 filthy alternate versions of this song I could recite to this day.

I remember in the 70's, when I was about to get my butt whipped, I would sing this song to my mom. It never worked. It usually just made her angrier. LOL

This commercial would come on and my dad would torture my older brothers to hug and kiss their dada! Great memories 😂😂😂

It has come to our attention that this new generation of parents can't stop treating their own kids like shit. Old people legit had to be reminded that kids are people too and still think they were good parents

As someone who works as a cashier its truly sad how many parents from that generation i've seen treat their children like dirt and speak to them without a shred of kindness. seriously HUG YOUR FUCKING KIDS

This message is just as important, necessary and vital in 2024 as it ever has been! April is Child Abuse Prevention Month! Every Moth of every Year of Every Decade should be Prevention of Child Abuse!

I’m currently a 15 year old. I’m neurodivergent. This is exactly how my dad behaves. As someone from the UK, my dad probably has never seen this. I bet he wouldn’t even care if I showed him. He only cares about himself.

I am a Gen Z'er raised by a baby boomer father I wish they played this PSA when I was a kid

I remember this from a Christian channel in the 80s when I lived near St. Louis. This one and the commercial where it shows this guy beating on a clay sculpture of Jesus representing how we treat Jesus and say his name in vain and blame him for our problems and at the end the guy realizes how he has been acting and makes amends with Jesus. I will always remember these two commercials.

Just remembered this commercial today. And yet, at least parents in the 1980’s were still more self cognizant than the parents of the 1920’s or 1930’s.

I'm kinda glad my parents weren't all lovey dovey, because it's made it easier to accept my loneliness as an adult. I don't even remember the last time I had physical contact with another human being.

I remember this commercial when I was little my family don't her cable we have regular tv it was on channel 24.

I remember watching this in the late 80s/early 90s on KNLC channel 24 in St. Louis. Channel 24 was a low budget Christian TV network run by Larry Rice Ministries. Larry Rice is known as kind of an interesting character in this region. He's probably most known for his work feeding and sheltering the homeless, his ministry and it's TV station, and for running for mayor; and depending who you ask, he's either a selfless crusader and advocate for the area's downtrodden, or he's an attention-obsessed charlatan more concerned with his media profile than with actually helping the city's poor. I dunno, nobody's perfect, but he seemed like the only person trying to help the homeless around here, too bad they shut him down.

I saw this on another video and then I showed that video to my roommate how was dumb founded that I had to show her the full PSA. She still can't believe it. I had to tell I actually heard my mother say stuff like this to me. I didn't get a hug for days.

Oh Gen X I used to love it when these commercials came on as annoying as they were as it would make other Gen X'ers leave the room possibly cussing and so I would then watch whatever I wanted instead of having to fight over the TV lol. This happened many times even at school the commercial came on in the middle of some tape recording of a school house rock. That teacher was grading papers and could not get to the VCR fast enough lol, so we saw commercials, everyone was annoyed and I laughed it up.
