I'm guessing it's all just estimation, skill from prior experience, and mid-flight snap decisions. Trust me, there are videos out there of people getting freaking REKT on rocks, trees, etc. doing this kind of gliding -just do some searching on LiveLeak and you'll find what I'm talking about.

Hundreds of jumps go in to setting up these lines, slowly bringing it lower and lower. Prior to that, maps and gps readings, hiking the mountains, checking the topography and making sure it's all possible. They are fighting to bring the suit lower and lower, the suit wants to go back level, so at any point they can bail and pop right up. But it's easy to get ground hungry and go too close, so it takes a lot of care and experience. All these proximity flying videos go to RU-vid and you see the work of hundreds of jumps and think it's just a one jump miracle, but it's a ton of work.
