30 years ago, when she was still working as a road worker in Thai Nguyen, Ms. Lam Thi Vinh (61 years old, from Bac Kan) fell in love with a male worker named Tran Phong (58 years old, from Thai Nguyen). The result of that love affair was a baby girl named Lam Thi Hoai Thu. At that time, Ms. Vinh had already had a failed marriage and also had a 9-year-old son.
For many reasons, Ms. Lam and Mr. Phong did not come together. She struggled to raise two small children on her own, lacking everything. So in 1996, when Hoai Thu was two years old, a friend introduced her to a "Western" couple who were looking to adopt a child, and Ms. Vinh went to meet them.
The French couple were teachers and had no children. They came to Vietnam in the hope of finding a child to adopt. Hearing the promise to love, care for and educate her daughter, Mrs. Vinh also hopes that her daughter will have a better life when living with her.
