I'm black and as a kid me and my black & white friends would swim then lay in the sun and then compare our tans. We all tan, the sun is cooking us all. We'd just move our swimsuit strap and see how much darker we got from what color we used to be. Sun damage was fun to us as kids 😂 smh

My sister-in-law is biracial and from Brazil. She now lives in the Northeast with my brother and when she comes to visit in FL, she's always like, "I'm hitting the beach, I've gotten so pale." And my brother and I are like, "Shut the !@#$ up!" We're like wine - our skin is white, rose or red.

I'm callin Cap on that sun tan story. As a whiter than white boy, I learned in basic training that black guys not only 'tanned' but got sunburn too. My battle buddy used more sunscreen than I did. And his logic was too strong: "I'm black and black soaks up more sun than white". I couldn't argue but I learned.

I’m mixed black and white. When i lived in ohio and had all my curly hair, everybody just thought i was a light skinned black man. Then i moved to Seattle and went bald. The lack of sun seemed to make me go pale and everyone thought i was white. When i was in high school all the light skinned brothers had to be extra black because they would get called out by darker skinned brothers. They called me light bright and almost white. Everyone wanted to meet my sister because she looked like Halle Berry. My brother looked like a six foot four inch version of Prince. It’s been a trip to be on both sides of the color line. When people used to ask if i was black or white i would say neither and both.

We light-skinned mixed race girls got to deal with a lot of crap, too. And many of us feel like we MUST be in the vanguard: the fiercest, loudest, most militant because our darker brothers and sisters can't, without much harsher consequences than we, as lighter women might face(I know from experience that colorism is an extremely malleable/relative state)

In the early 70s around ago 10 or 11, I went to visit my Uncle stationed up state NY. I met a new friend, and we went to the pool. She pulled out some BABY OIL as sun tan lotion. Hell I didn't know any better. Blakc people don't tan, right? I got the WORSE EVER SUNBURN... and worse it was on my face and my glasses cause excruciating pain. Yes, we TAN and BURN... I love it when I tan, such a beautiful BURNT ORANGEY GLOW... like free bronzer... Same as the Crayola crayon BURNT ORANGE... SO I'm NOT Black according to CRAYOLA CRAYONS!!! 😂😅😂😊😂

🤣😜🤪 My children are biracial black/white. My 3 boys look straight Puerto Rican and my two daughters are very light-skinned. The duckin' out every 20mins had me dead because it's so damn true🤗😜 Comin' up, my boys always came home from school "Pop, all the Latino kids be speakin' Spanish to me all the time, when I don't reply, they look at me like I'm on ignant". Crackin' up laughin' I said "Next time jus say "No habla Espanol, then they'll understand". He said "aight pops". Week later he came home from school "Pops I said "No Habla, they took a step back, looked me up & down and said in English "Get the fuggouttahere"! I cracked up because I knew they'd say that but he didn't". I said to'em "don't trip, when I was your age, (back when I had big, curly hair) people swore I was dark skinned Dominican, so I getcha & it's all good.

A white passing white/Asian person has very little in common with a white/black person that just looks like a light-skinned black person. Do you really think Keanu Reeves and Barack Obama have had many similar experiences as children? You end up with a bunch of small biracial groups with very little social capital.

Mixed black/mexican (white too from slavery and Spain) and can relate to this. I don't speak any Spanish and grew up in LA raised by the black side of the family(mom's side). All I got was "you gotta learn dawg" lol. Now I live in the midwest and ppl think I'm either Puerto Rican or Italian. Nowadays more Puerto Rican because I finally got my curl right. Funny part is in LA black ppl just kind of figured out I was black even if I didn't really know them they way we interacted was like they just knew. Hard to explain, but when I told my older brother he knew exactly what I was talking about, lmao.

All skin soaks up the sun. Even the darkest of dark. Skin loves a healthy amount of vitamin d if you protect it well. Funny, my mother and I are butter pecan complexion and we were checking out a gym membership when I was a young teenager and I remember the white attendant giving us a tour and her saying about the tanning beds, "Oh, you won't be needing those" matter of factly in my mom giving her all the sarcastic hard time in the world. The woman was so confused😅

Light skinned people do tan. My daughters do. They lay out for an hour or two and get significantly darker. I thought they were joking at first but I was tripped all the way out when I saw the difference. It was nearly immediate. And they are not mixed!

Speaking from this place as a white dude, most white women and some white dudes will try to act more black as a sad attempt to fit in, like Gary does onstage. From that place, most white dudes won't change their personality simply because they are dating a asian, black or a Mexican chick, so the kids usually learn more about both sides. That isn't the case for Gary, the guy panders to black people way to hard, so it's no suprise that his kids are doing it, to most white people, his pandering ass is hot garbage.

I believe we might be overanalyzing this. Children can form connections with whomever they choose to, regardless of their racial backgrounds. This concern appears to be more prevalent in the United States, where racial identity carries significant weight. Mixed race Children are forced to pick a race rather than just be themselves. In many other countries, mixed-race children often don't face this issue. Moreover, it's essential to note that most children don't seek romantic partners who resemble their parents; that would be somewhat unusual. Personally, I've always avoided dating individuals who bear a resemblance to my mother or sisters that to me is weird.
