The verbal vs written conversation just saved me and my family thousands on our new home builds. Everything is writing, email. Very good advice.

Having built our concrete pool last summer, I cannot agree more with everything Steve outlines in this video. We engaged Steve for his pool Construction Consulting service - probably the best and most important service we paid for in this project. Highly recommended! Steve’s consulting service is so valuable because you are getting objective, unbiased advice - he’s not selling you anything other than information. A contractor is going to advise you to do what’s best for them. Steve advises on what’s best for you, and you can go into a discussion with your contractor armed with some knowledge. Our pool is awesome, thanks in part to Steve’s help!

Pre-purchase consultation should be a must. Problem is barely anyone thinks they need it. For years I've been saying that in too many cases, pools are being sold by people who do not know what they are selling, and being bought by people who do not know what they are buying. (I had a brief gig selling pools years ago for a national pool builder and was stunned at what I overheard other salespeople telling their prospective customers). I could go on and on about some pools I've been called out to give a quote on weekly service and didn't even bid on it. A few of them I knew instantly that the pool was built by someone who had never built one before. Went to court as a witness for the plaintiff once. People need to remember that if they buy a $60K+ car that turns out to be a lemon, they'll take a hit on it, but can resolve that issue later that day. With a pool, a bit harder to trade in. If you're going to put a pool in, get objective, highly experienced help. Great videos! (but I do agree with getting some time stamps for the different issues addressed).

Time stamps are added now, thank you. Great comment. I often compare having a pool built to having a car built. Imagine getting 3 quotes for random people to build you a car...and imagine how different each of those cars will be from a technical perspective. That is pretty close to what it is like hiring someone to build you a pool. Cheers

Thank you for your feedback. Up until now I have been relying on the automatic chapters provided by youtube but after your comment I went ahead and manually added chapters to this video. Would you mind to take a look and let me know if this is what you had in mind for this? Since I am making much longer form videos now I do not mind adding this feature to them if it improves the viewers experience. Cheers.

Questions to ask your pool builder? That might be a good follow up video. Oh the pool company said that we would have to cap off the sprinklers, then we have to hire another person to do this. Also I have heard that capped sprinklers can leak, domino’s want to the run these or remove them.

Good suggestions and it would have helped me. I’m in Idaho and got one quote and went with it. It was ok but stressful and took longer than promised and some things were missed. The pool builder is a general and needs to communicate to trades especially when it’s trades that have no experience with pools. It was a new business so references was harder. There was no communication. Just hoped they showed up. Never knew when they were coming. Have a deadline and penalty if possible. It took May-October and it’s still had some check items that they never came back to fix. Be sure to have a payment plan along they way and hold some out until completion.

I would ask about wiring too! Low vs high voltage. My pool contractor told me at the time of pool wiring that he did not do conduit to the pool lights and my electrician had to come do it. I was upset and he never had talked to me about that. I got power and gas to the corner and that was my job.

What be your educated opinion on when replacing an above ground vinyl liner, leaving the flooring (bottom) area in and applying the new liner over the previous vinyl liner floor? Considering there is no surface defects, bumps, foot prints, etc.

Thanks for the information! I recently started a new Pool company and am focused on servicing pools, but want to eventually start building pools. Where can I get educated? What is your advice? I have a construction crew, electrician, and concrete guy. I just need proper education. Thank you in advance.

i have a pool that we dont use. if i drain it and put a mesh cover on it or will the pebble tec get ruined . also if i leave water in it can i just leave the mesh cover on and put chemicals in the skimmer.

You are not supposed to leave pools empty. Likely the better option is to leave it full and pay to keep it minimally maintained. Usually cities have bylaws about letting pools sit stagnant as they are a breeding ground for pests etc. like mosquitos.

So, since I have an older pool (built in 1993) and both suction and return are 1.5” and I updated the pad with 2” lines and a VS Pump, was this a waste of effort? Btw, it only has 1 suction line (from 1 skimmer). I’m hoping it still provides some benefits without too many problems with turbulence?
@Swimmingpoolsteve
@Swimmingpoolsteve 4 месяца назад
It won't hurt things but you also will not get the maximum benefits. Also you are probably operating in excess of 38 gpm, or 6 fps water velocity which you technically should not. There are many pools like this out there. Existing ones which are not set up for safety or efficiency.

Is it possible to construct a new pool without a main drain at the bottom of the deep end?
@Swimmingpoolsteve
@Swimmingpoolsteve 4 месяца назад
Yes, this is becoming more and more common. It is possible to have adequate suction and return / diffusion of clean, filtered water with only surface skimming suction. Add to this an automatic water level unit plus a VS pump which can detect "no flow" as opposed to burning out if the water level manages to drop below thebskimmer mouth...and you are good to go! Just be sure you have adequate pipe size and numbers for the system design you will need.

Thank you so much for your response! I always learn something new when interacting with you, whether it's through your videos or comments. I wasn't aware of the existence of an automatic water level unit until you mentioned it, and it's definitely something I'll keep in mind.@@Swimmingpoolsteve

Hey Steve, We've got an inground concrete pool and spa with two pumps - one for the pool and one for the spa. Our pool holds 30,000 gallons. We've stopped using the spa and the heater altogether. The issue is with the water, as it still runs through the spa and heater even though they're not in use. What can be a solution for this problem? Is it possible to have a plumber come out and replumb everything without digging or filling in the spa for this summer?@@Swimmingpoolsteve
@Swimmingpoolsteve
@Swimmingpoolsteve 4 месяца назад
@jimmykassouf6120 often a water level control system is something that is integrated when the pool is built. However, recently there are new systems which can be adapted as a retrofit as well as have smart control. Take a look at this product: www.h2flow.net/levelsmart-autofill
