Haha - I studied those contact points during vibrato on my own finger tips just yesterday (and then I saw your video today)!! 😊 A very expert and excellent and helpful video - thank you! 😃
Great lesson, Joy. I have a question regarding the contact points, especially the base knuckle of the first finger (index finger) of left hand. In this video, your base knuckle of 1st finger looks relaxed or soft touched to the violin. Or it doesn't touch at all? You prefer to use only Thumb and Finger tips as the contact points. Thanks!
Thank you Zhongwei. Yes, you are right. I was. The side of index finger can touch the violin neck, as long as it's touching very lightly without pressure. Happy practising!
Joy, when you can please see how many cent the pitch changes for you when you do the full finger motion that you show here e.g. in first position. You can see this pitch change very easily on any tuner. And then let us know. I'd be REALLY interested in the result because my finger tips are quite large, so those finger tip lines are longer than yours when I do the full range of motion you do here, so the resulting pitch variation for me sounds extremely extreme to me - in other words, too much! Clearly for a person with smaller finger tips the lines will be shorter and greater finger movement is needed for a given pitch change. 🙂 Edit: I just tried it, and if I start with G on the D string in first position, and draw my finger flat / straight, the pitch drops 98 cents i.e. to F# 🤭. What drop do you get?
Hi JS, I admire your drive for a sincere discovery. This video is about how one can progress from "moving the entire arm/wrist" to "anchored fingertip" on the string, which is an important step in mastering vibrato. However it is not the final step of mastering vibrato, hence the exact measurement of the width of the vibrato oscillation is not the goal in this step. When we are new to any techniques , many times we exaggerate the movement to train our muscles to adopt the new movement. Once our muscles become familiar with the new technique, then we can move onto the next step which is making it more fine and settled. If you want to see next steps of this vibrato technique mastering and more, please see these videos. although I haven't reached tremolo yet, I'm doing chromatic scale I think it's a step before tremolo, that's what my teacher told me, watching your video I'm excited where are there ways to do this thanks joy🎻
