Thanks to the super fans! www.patreon.com/wordsnwood I had just finished my last day at work before the Christmas Holidays. We'd cut out a bit early, and I was home in the mid afternoon. I just felt like playing in the shop, and had an idea to build a little scrap wood project to make a laptop storage shelf that could hold two or three laptops. I just wanted to have some fun in the shop, and also make something useful to me. I knew that this would be of interest to virtually no one else, so I didn't feel any need to make a video about this. And it would be fun to not worry about filming. But then I thought, that maybe I'd film a bit of it on my cellphone, just for instagram, or maybe a RU-vid short... But the more I thought about it I also thought about how so many channels shut down over Christmas, so that there are very few new videos released. So I thought that there might be some folks out there who just enjoy "dropping by my shop" and seeing what I'm working on. So that lead to this. It's still very rough, shot on a cellphone, with some shaky hand held footage and some audio issues. But I was still focussed on having fun in the shop and not so much on video production. Hope you found something of interest, and maybe got some ideas for your own workshop. And have a great Holiday and a peaceful new year!
Glad you decided to share this. Apart from the fun of playing in the workshop, it's so nice to make items customised to suit our requirements, rather than settle for whatever happens to be available for purchase. Also much more satisfying using up scrap materials. This specific project probably isn't one many of us want to make, but the thought processes and techniques have plenty of general application.
I liked how you started with the basic function, then looked at the available scrap and designed the stand using the pieces as inspiration. This is a very satisfying project (long O in project). Camera was fine, fancy doodads not required. I selected your video first to watch as I ate lunch so keep up the good work!
I'll take that risk. At the worst, I will have a new scrapwood project to build. But I really doubt that 3lbs of laptop are going to snap it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I did check and it would seem you are correct about grooves... honestly never came across that. TIL.
Great project! I like the engineer as you go for things like this. Saved some wood, filled a niche and looks amazing on your desk. What more can one want? Congratulations! 😏
Fun and quick project, and definitely meets the function. I thought you might cut some subtle curves into the front of each shelf - might be a nice way to add a little more form to the function. Well done, Art!
Nice, Art, but I have to wonder if the laptops will have enough room for air the vent below them if they're left running while on this stand. It looks (maybe deceptively?) like the shelves are smaller than the laptops are likely to be, so the little bit of standoff space they get from their rubber feet might not be there, and that could have nasty effects on the laptop's cooling. You can compensate by making slots in the shelves easily enough before gluing it together.
Awesome project, Art! That turned out great. I love to see simple, easy to make projects that have basic materials and solve a problem. That is a terrific stand and I’m going to steal your design to make one for my house. That is the solution I didn’t know existed. My kids have multiple computers and they’ve been stacked on a shelf. This is SO much better. Happy new year and I look forward to more great videos from you in 2024! 👍🏼
Sir. Another great build. Question: I am new to woodworking and would be able to share how you build your cross cut sled? I am looking to build one for the table saw I just purchased. Thank you.
Good idea for a future video. Haven't made a video about that yet. If you need one sooner I'd look for one by Steve Ramsay, John Heisz, or Matthias Wandel.
It's funny how you think this is something that only interests me, but I've had more than one comment state that they wanted to build one. Channel Growth would be great!
