Sometimes we realize that our training days don't have the type of variety that adds spice and excitement to a dog's training sequence. This clip is an example how you can use a fun game to change the tempo of training and yet be a really valuable tool in your training sequence.

Great video Bill. I have a few of your videos and they have taught me so much. I think what I take away from all of them is to have fun, speak in a calm manner. Each of your videos offers a system that builds on previous taught materials.My springer and I have truly learned a lot from this process and it is so nice to see how eager he is to accomplish these games or drills

This process is awesome, especially when you have to train by yourself, and want to get some long range mark training. My dog picked this up pretty quick and it has really enhanced our time in the field to train.

how do you get a dog to fetch and bring item back to you my will get item and then want to play keep away he'll come but drops item.

You may need to go back to the basics and get a 30 foot check cord and make sure that you are not throwing the bumper further than that. Once they get it, you pull the dog back to you until they realize that this is what they need to be doing. Make sure that you reward them when they get to you. Even if you had to pull them to you. If you have a pup, and a long hallway where you can shut the doors, use that so they have to play so they have to run past you. But check out the puppy basics on Bill Hillmans page.

Somewhere else, Hillman explains how each command must be practiced separately. The difficult part for the human is waiting for at least a 75% success before introducing the next command. The other key to success is creating (and never stopping to do it ) excitement near to you, so that the dog will not start « protecting ». Had the same problem with my girl.
