Things that seem boring and routine on the surface can often be looked at in different ways. This is necessary when we want to give a new perspective and new life to something that’s considered fundamental. In this case, I’m talking about the 1 4 5 Chord Progression.

Really appreciate you breaking all this down for us. When I was in the Marines during Boot camp... they had this phrase "Breaking it down Barney Style". The idea being, that you wanted to break ideas or concepts or the training down so incrementally and so simply; that ANYONE could understand what was being taught. This got everyone on the same proverbial page; and allowed THEM (those being taught) to continue on to train anyone else just as easily. Later on in life, when I was studying the martial arts, and then even later still, when I attempted to master regular and contact juggling... I learned to appreciate the power of mastering the BASICS. Every subject has basics. The masters are the ones who learn those basics so well; that they their creativity never suffers from an unsound wholistic structure. And SOME masters, get so acquainted with the basics, that they can completely leave that wholistic structure, to go on and a create ANOTHER TOTALLY DIFFERENT STRUCTURE; However, it is the initial understanding of a WHOLE STRUCTURE; that allows them to create a totally different one. And this never happens if you don't spend enough time understanding how the individual parts of that whole structure are related; and how the parts are related to the whole. Anyways, wish I would have watched this video before I asked you a question on the video where you demonstrate how to quickly play the Major scales. I had asked about the different fingers that you were using. I had asked about playing the C,F,G with the 1,3,5 fingers; and all the rest of the 12 chords with the 1,2,3 fingers. You answered this by saying that *BEGINNERS* play the C,F,G with the odd fingers (1,3,5); but you like to play with consecutive fingers (1,2,3); because this allows you to add a 7th with your pinkie. That seems like sound reasoning, no pun intended :) So, I asked myself the question about how you might get into trouble with needing the to put a note or tone in between the first and the third notes of the chord; or between the third and the fifth. But after thinking things through, I realized that that would never be the case; because those are the smallest intervals possible; so there is no situation where you would be adding notes/tones in between those fingers. But then... I thought of something you had taught in either your video or on your website. I forget the terminology; but you had suggested that Jazz or Blues adds some notes or tones in *INTERESTING* places. If I remember this right; and I might not... this had suggested that it was possible to add chords IN BETWEEN the smallest intervals. In THAT case; it seems to me, you would have to switch finger positions (playing the second note and the fifth note with consecutively higher fingers, or the fingers immediately to the right; using the originally intended finger to play that quirky note/tone). Hope I made some sense with this question/comment? I guess the upshot of all this, is that I'm going to switch from playing the C,F, and G chords with the beginner finger position of 1,3,5 - TO the 1,2,3; and practice THAT way from now on. Thanks again for taking the time to think all this out and present it in such a simple and easy way to understand for some of us newbies out here!

Wow, excellent teaching - thank you! Through this teaching video, I just discovered to utilize these progressions into every key in the Maj. & min. Modes in order to teach myself to transpose from key to key -Eureka moment (the third one within two days ! Also I can now more smoothly play chord inversions thanks to your excellent pedagogy Thank you a million times:) See until now every attempt to transpose has been a sorry one or a right out failure with frustration. Now, I can study your method and use it to learn the difficult key signatures and to teach myself how to transpose and to create some base lines and learn each family of chords and inversions. I can not thank you enough for providing me with this methodology. I also have a suspicion it can too be applied toward learning to play by ear and for improvisations! Well, I must get back to your video as I c am not yet through it and I have already learned so much - I can barely wait to see the rest of this video-based I just was compelled to share my quick success and my applications, perhaps it will assist your other listeners as well -thanx! for sharing:)

You'd have no troubles if you'd learned numbers in the first place. In other words, you didn't learn the basics FIRST, like so many other people. Hey, why bnot make it easy on yourself? Go check the curriculua of a few university music schools, or better yet, get yourself a copy of the Berklee School of Music course.

Isn't a A chord a: A, C sharp, E. Then the B chord: B, Eb, F sharp? Unless its A minor or the shape of "C"... C, E, G.
@connormcpartland9625
@connormcpartland9625 5 лет назад
Im not sure your question but an A major chord is A, C#, E, a B major chord is B,D#,F# and A minor is the relative minor to C major. Although a C chord is C,E,G. An A minor chord is A,C,E (one note difference)

I'd like to see what the 'second' chords look like in actual sheet music. Does it have a 'symbol' written above the staff to recognize it? BTW, you've got a great southern accent. Informative demo. Thank you!
@LearnColorPiano
@LearnColorPiano 5 лет назад
Hi Carol, thank you for your comment. The secondary chords in the key of C Major are D minor, E minor, A minor and B diminished. The chord symbols would be Dm, Em, Am, and B dim. They of course are notated in lead sheets and traditional sheet music where chord symbols are present. Great question!

I am too much of a beginner to get things out of this. You said several times that you were getting ahead of yourself. Maybe structure it to a beginner level and it would be more palatable to more people. BTW I am colour blind and I don't know if you were using different colours on the keys and the writing. I would suggest using Colour Blind Awareness for help as a creator. Yellows and blues are better for most people. 14% of people are afflicted.
