Hi everyone! So, I stumbled across this video that I filmed a few weeks back now, and I must have forgotten to upload it. I have decided to pop it live because I hope it might help someone in their journey towards deciding to get hearing aids. Appreciate it's a niche video, but let me know if you'd like a more recent update too and I'll do one! xx

WHO AM I?
I'm Charlotte.
I'm 28, love carbs, rubbish 90's music, Prosecco and baths without finding a bath toy stuck under my bum.
I have a little boy called Bill (born June 2012) and a little girl called Daisy (born April 2016).
I am, very recently, a full-time vlogger and blogger (the stuff dreams are made of), but I am also a trained journalist, former magazine editor, and content lead.
I'm also part of Channel Mum - which is really worth checking out if you're a mama like me and want to find videos to make you laugh, cry, nod, or get advice. / channelmum
I was a single mum, just me and Bill. But then I had a bit of a fairytale moment when I met Mark (he's a bit lovely) and things are better than I could have hoped for now. Daisy was born with Stickler Syndrome, and a cleft palate like me. Her start has been rocky but she'll be fine. She's got a family who adore her after all.
I know that all mums are different in their own way, but I hope you enjoy seeing snippets of my life, all the same.

This was so comforting to watch as my hearing aid is being fitted tomorrow for the first time and I was feeling a little apprehensive about it. You really have helped me, thank you!

You are brilliant! As an audiologist myself, your story is very motivating. You express yourself ever so eloquently. You're honest about both the positive and negative aspects of hearing aids. You're such a fantastic advocate. Keep up the great work, I'm sure you're helping many people through these hard decisions.

Thanks for sharing! I got the same hearing aids in January and I experienced the exact same things that you talk about. The hair behind your ear is the biggest annoyance, but overall it has really changed my life! I'm bummed that I waited so long.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I got mine recently and it's great to know someone else's experience when the vast majority of channels are simply barely disguised adverts for specific hearing aids brands.

Hi Charlotte, Your video is the 1st one that has made me feel anyway close to normal with the hearing aid experience. I realised that I was suffering from hearing loss & was subsequently tested & prescribed hearing aids on the NHS. That was a year ago & I still get very frustrated as the sound still sometimes feels very 'tinny' & I'm in a tunnel . I had a very painful ear infection recently & am convinced that my hearing has been reduced as a result which is quite worrying as I'm an older person. Sorry to bang on but I feel that you are a kindred spirit but you have explained things really well. Perhaps my expectations were unrealistic to begin with but I am trying to get there. Thank you for the advice & please do make further videos - you are a calming person & I appreciate that. Kind regards, Ian

You are a lovely individual. I was just roaming RU-vid regarding hearing aids that I will be getting this week and saw your video. I learned a lot about you as a person and learned a lot about the anxiety of wearing the aids. Thanks for the time that you have taken to explain to your viewers how your hearing aids have changed your life. I, of course, don't know you but, I would bet people that do think you are a great person. Because a person wears aids does not mean that anything with their personality will change. Again, thanks for your reminding people the need to wear the aids and how you feel about having the aids.

You are remarkable, Charlotte. I'm sure a lot of people would deny that they needed help, whether it be help with hearing, sight, walking, mental and physical health. When Shannon, was offered antidepressants to aid her depression, she wasn't keen, but when it was pointed out that she doesn't think twice about wearing her glasses, to help her see. She realised it's okay to not be okay. xx

This is a great video Charlotte! I've had my hearing aids for about 2.5 years now and I went into it thinking that although I was 'ok' with the idea, it wasn't something that happened to people my age and I felt like a little old lady to start with. It's so important I think for younger people to say they have them and it's no big deal. My life has also improved dramatically as a result. I'm a naturally comfortable loner but also very sociable and I was getting sick of not hearing conversations and thinking 'oh well, at least I like my own company as that's what I'm going to get' and missing out on so much because I couldn't hear. I had a giggle at you saying you can't tuck your hair behind your ears as that's also my big pet hate with them! Why won't it stay?? 😂. I've also experienced the 'what's that odd noise?' moment when the battery is low. And those little chimes you get when you change the settings and they are in your ears? I swear that's my theme tune now! But no one else knows! 😆😆. So glad you're getting on with them! 👍 xx

With you hair you could try getting a soft material head band that goes round your head and holds your hair back (not an Alice band but one that is more like a circle of material). I have one for when I was in catering and it meant my hair was free but it couldn't come into my face. They are soft and don't come out like hair clips/grips/slides and don't put pressure on your head like Alice bands.

My hearing loss is real... I've been living in denial by trying to fake it. Fake that I can hear fully. I respond a simple yes and no to questions from someone downstairs and I use context cues to help me figure out what is being said... I'm only 27. It's heartbreaking and embarrassing to admit this to my spouse and his family and even my own families.

Thank you so much for this video, I get my first hearing aids in four weeks time and you have answered a lot of questions for me, As a music lover I am worried about the possible lack or loss of tone in music, I also am a little worried about my glasses fitting properly after I get the hearing aids in as I will need both all the time, I get the fact that my world hearing wise will change as I've lived in a low frequency world for years and everything is sort of flat even some bird song I can't hear so i am prepared for a flood of new sounds in my life and I hope I deal with them as well as you have, Thank you again for the information.

Well done!! Thank you for this video. I have had hearing loss for most of my 49 years, and I am FINALLY getting my aids in 5 days. Very nervous / excited / anxious about the whole process. Also trying not to expect an instant miracle cure. The nurse at my fitting said that the hearing aid can sync to a high end phone and a "smart TV" so that the sound will go directly to my new aids, but my phone isn't good enough for that. So right now I'm not sure how a phone conversation or my music headphones will work. But I am looking forward to learning.

My ear infection started since I was a kid. In my last check up, they said I have conductive hearing loss. Now my ear is acting up again and going for a check up because it gotten worse, I'm anxious because my mother asked me how I would feel about getting hearing aids. It makes me feel conscious but now I found your video and gives me a great boost of confidence. So I want to say thank you for making this video. It helps me and a lot of other people.

My 19-month-old son has mild-moderate hearing loss. He yanks his hearing aids out a lot, and goes through phases of enduring them then not at all. I worry that we give him a free pass on not wearing them too often. Since I can't ask him what they're like, I'm glad there are videos out there from people who can explain it and help me understand what he might be experiencing.

Oh my gosh.. a hearing aid.. how terrible 😯 but not really. I couldn’t help to type it after listening to you though. I really hate when people judge. If it helps and not hurting anyone, do it. I’m so glad I found your video. I’m getting my first hearing aid in a few weeks and I’m starting to get anxious. Everyone (apart from my very deaf sister who doesn’t understand me without them) is telling me they don’t help and had to return them. I really... REALLY want to be able to not need maxed out volume to listen to the computer, understanding people in background noise would be great and making phone calls would be awesome. Plus I’m tired of asking ‘huh? What did you say? Again please!’ I’m driving myself crazy. And as you can see from how I started this comment, I’m crazy enough already. It’s comforting to hear someone (who is not very deaf) say they’re helpful. Thank you. 🤗 P.S. I’m hoping for a bright red one. I really don’t care how others think. If it helps, I’ll make it stand out and be fashionable. 😃 ^CJ.

I myself have gotten Hearing aids and like a lot of people was a bit scared or worried how they would do, they are really great for me to be able to hear conversations instead of thinking people are mumbling, also I would ask them what or just catch words and figure out what they were saying, I can now hear tv at a volume that is comfortable to everyone else, if you’re on the fence about it find a reputable audiologist and go for it, hearing things now that I have been missing, btw I am 65 years old, thanks for the video.

I wear hearing aids too, worst things... Smoke alarms sound twice in your ear so no more chatted steak for me! You can have the sounds adjusted so the baby doesn't sound so shrill, it's a tweak on the high notes, my tip is to turn it down or switch it to the T position and it will muffle the sound a bit. I'm told I should wear an ear mould on my right ear but they give me eczema so I have a double dome ear bud to make it fit better. I've also learned that when tinnitus is really bad to wear my hearing aid turned to setting 1 going to bed, absolute bliss! I've done the shower thing too! I also did wonder what on earth the funny beeping was first time the battery ran out! That gets very annoying when driving and you can't do anything about it!!! Well done you for this video xxx

OMG I am a computer person and live in the US in Florida. I have worked in and around large computers all my life and my son had continually yelled at me for having the television up too loud. Im always asking people to repeat themselves or I would just nob my head in agreement. I must admit Im scared. I want so much to be able to hear more normally. It sounds like everyone talks with a lisp. Apparently Im getting the top of the line aids roughly $6200 USD and they are suppose to have bluetooth so I can have conference calls in my head and watch tv in my head. I would sit across people at a restaurant and never be able to hear the other person. This is most likely the reason why im 60 and single. I go tomorrow to be fit with 2 aids. A week ago they put a sample set in and I thought the audiologist was yelling at me and I was noticing sounds I have never heard. I want to hear but Im afraid of the transition period. You truly inspired me and Im more excited now to try and really want it to work. There are many settings for different environments. I go on cruises a lot and am worried about the wind when walking around the open decks on the ship and dont want the hearing aids to catch flight and be ripped out of my ears. Are they waterproof so if its raining would they get ruined? Do they have a warranty and insurance that would protect them? I would love to hear more.

I got my first hearing aids as an adult (mid 40’s). I’m amazed at how seldom people even notice them, even people I work closely with and see everyday. I have blond hair and wear it short (above the ear) so there’s nothing to hide them. My hearing loss is mild, but I found it hard to hear: my elem age students, in crowds, or when people are not facing me.

I feel a little better with this video I've been told by my audiologist i need a hearing aid in my left ear I just been to scared to try one. I read lips when I can't hear people but it's so hard to do that with them people. Sometimes I just pretend I heard them cause I don't want to say what was that you said again and again. I think I will get it a try. I go back to see my doctor tomorrow. Thanks

I got hearing test 2 weeks ago and I've apparently got a mild loss. Today I got fitted with my 1st hearing aids and wore them for about 1.5hrs and had to take them out cars going past, just general noise was annoying lol. I'm sensitive to sudden noises especially loud bangs/whistles, high pitch etc from my autisim. I tried using the aids again tonight at dinner out and there was alot of chatter I had to take them out again becouse they were giving me ear aches... It's so annoying it's like do I put up with it and trial them for 2 weeks like I've been told or just give up and not use them..

I have worn them since I was 4 not long after I started school. You will get more and more used to it as time goes on. I got new hearing aids in June and I would still say I am getting used to them still as they manipulate sound so differently to my last set, the audiologist did say it would take about 8 weeks to get used to. I don't know what I would do without mine!

Charlotte, I just came across this video. I just found out that I have 30% hearing loss in both my ears, I didn't think it was that bad, if I decided not to get hearing aids. I do have some nerve damage and a problem with hearing loss in my inner ear. I am so confused to what to do. Sometimes I want them, but I guess deep down, I am afraid too.

Karyn Ahern I think you should get them. Hearing aids may be shocking at first, but being able to hear better will improve relationships and work and/or school grades bc you can hear instructions and dont miss important things (seriously, if you get hearing aids you'll never feel mortified when your friend tells you last year they attempted to befriend you but you didnt hear them say "wanna be friends?).

You got them prescribed by audiologist/ear doctor, or are they over-the-counter ones? I’m going through something where my hearing is just barely below the decibel range for them to fit me in professionally fitted heating aids, but I need them enough that it’s affecting my daily life. I’ve gone through at least 7 over-the-counter ones that would catch all background noise, trigger my sensory processing and anxiety and just overall get annoying and uncomfortable ( since I had to mess with them to fit my ears since I’m a teen not an elder) finally I decided to ask my dad to buy me a Bluetooth one that is well made and can be controlled to a ‘T’ via a phone app and it’s the best I’ve had yet. There are controls to set it to ‘being in a group setting, in busy areas, outside, and in traffic ‘ then there are slide bars on another setting to control the pitches, volumes, decibels, etc. then basic volumes and then there is an option for a “hearing test” in the app to set the HA settings to exactly where they think you’ll need it ( of course you can modify it still) it’s really the best equipment I’ve ever had for an over the counter $300 product.

Hi Charlotte, I've had my hearing aids since last October but I've hardly worn them. I have mine due to tinitus which affects my hearing all the time. My aids irritate my inner ear and also the tops of my ears and I can also hear the rustling of my hair on the microphone! Really annoying 😕 I tend to wear mine on social occasions so I can hear what people are saying. I know I ought to wear them daily but I really do struggle with them but I realise it's not the same for everyone. Thanks for sharing xx

It took multiple tries to get a dome that fit my ear/stayed in my ear when I first got my aids @ 45. “Ear Gear” helps with the rustling sound of wind or my glasses bumping my aids (my hair is too short to interfere, so I’m assuming glasses rubbing would be similar). www.gearforears.com/products/?BP+-+Hearing+Aid+Cover+Campaign&hsa_acc=5884193878&hsa_cam=10457937356&hsa_grp=1339205700603304&hsa_ad=&hsa_src=s&hsa_tgt=kwd-83700676558622:loc-190&hsa_kw=ear%20gear&hsa_mt=e&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_ver=3

I live with a hearing impaired person who will not get a hearing aid. She comes up wit h any and every excuse she can for either not getting a hearing aid or why she can't hear. She usually blames failure to hear on me. She is constantly confused because she is trying to figure out what is said. I repeat just about everything and she still mostly gets it wrong. There can be no discussions about anything because she just can't follow them. She almost always responds inappropriately or out of context. A defense mechanism is to change the subject. If you are hard of hearing take some responsibility and consideration for others. Join the world. Get a hearing aid instead of making others pay for your problem. The only shame is missing out and making others suffer because of your pig headedness.
