Having issues with the 351 engine swap ❌

Yesterday was the 1st mockup for the 351 Windsor engine swap. We thought we had things fitting and level but come to find out we didn't actually have a true read. So today we need to figure out a solution and then try the engine in again - this time without the transmission 🤞🏻

I would like to add this comment. Lots of people say get the right engine and do it like this do it that way do it this way but what you don’t understand is bad Chad has to come up with fresh content every single day of the year. If he just does things vanilla way, I really don’t think he would have nowhere near as many subscriptions as he does with bad Chad it’s all about doing it away with what you got and what is in your door yard. His content is always so exciting and so fresh and if he just started putting in motors that fit right in, it would get so boring, bad Chad having said that keep doing what you’re doing because that’s what bring me and a whole lot of us back every day. 1 suggestion. Put the trans back on the engine and look to see if the end of the tail shaft is centered on the engine front to back. Next measure from the end of the tail shaft to each engine mount and see if they are the same. 3rd, put a square on your engine mount adapter gauge at the center and see if it goes straight down the center of the tunnel.

Hello Chad and Joline…I have been following your channel for a while now,and this is my first post. I want to comment on two things I’ve noticed of late. #1..do not put people on blast, even if they have wronged you because it sends a message to others to not do business with you. #2..stop apologizing for who you are because we all are not perfect. There are haters out there that would like to see you fail..don’t fall into their trap my friend, stop mentioning them so often because you are giving them space in your head. joline, look out for Chad by not letting him give into temptation!

For what it's worth - take the headers off and situate the engine properly. Then modify the headers to fit.

No no no..I get what you're suggesting. But chad is the king of DIY custom fab. I would fab my own first to see it the idea comes together and works well and is 1 of a kind long before buying same shit every other 351 swap uses. Because I bet a thousand itll be JUST FINE!

I'm for sure keeping Nova Scotians and particularly the firefighters in my prayers. Bush and forest fires are treacherous, not only can they change directions quickly, they can generate their own wind storms. Fire brands can be blown up to a kilometer before coming down and starting another front to battle. I like the way you thought out the motor mount issue, yet another great idea for me to file under 'useful'. Jolene is a quiet helping hand, keeping track of stuff and flipping on the welder and what not. She's a good 'ground' for Chad. I'll be watching tomorrow.

My advise as I'm watching Chad try to line up the motor mounts. Do not use a level as the car frame it's self is not level. Lay a piece of square stock across the top of the frame above the location of the mounts. Measure down to establish the same height of each mount while using the square stock with the welded bolts to keep a true read on spacing from each other. I wish I was there to explain it. As I said at the end of last night ! Only put the LEVEL on the engine mounts (with/without engine itself) AFTER you CHECK the CHASSIS is LEVEL too !

And then's there's the issue of if the mounts on the engine are slotted and there's no way now to know where the mounts on the frame were relative to the mounts on the engine, then either you go with the apparatus you made as the control or you go off of the level with no way of knowing about whether or not the garage floor, the tires and the frame are level.

Jolene you hear anny more news on the fires in NS ? Its sad to lose any thing leet alone your life hoping everybody is ok . Shout out to Halfass customs they were unlucky . Chad and Doug busy as usual looks like welding mounts in .. chad will you use some gussetes on them ? Making a car roadworthy isa big job . Engine can be solid mounted it's all on what the builder/driver prefers it's just a lil more vibration more road feel is all mostly race cars also some hot rods solid mounts it so it looks cool at a stop light as the camshaft has the engine chopping it shakes and rocks the vehicle side to side alot more than rubber mounts do

As you mentioned, I don't think the factory welded in the stock crossmember exactly perpendicular to the frame. Once you box in the new mounts, the slight difference on where the new motor mount plate sits won't be that noticeable.

actually .... there's no guarantee that the engine was perfectly squared with the frame when you sat it in there which is why your "line" on the passenger side was slightly forward. Level the frame side to side, then level the jig side to side and then measure the same distance from the front of the engine mount tubes to a "squared" crossmember further forward and then you know your engine is perfectly inline with the vehicle centerline

Typically motor mounts are made with a certain amount of adjustability. Usually there is a rubber bushing and slots in metal to afford a good fit for the engine. Slop fit is what it's called by some old schools. The main factor is to get the engine in a good spot not touching anything.

When you made the jig for the mounting bolt locations, did you stick them in the cross member from the correct side? like one side is facing "front" other side is facing "rear" That will make a huge difference rather they fit or not. Actually the only way to get it right, you must have the engine and trans sitting in place, (using the correct size bolts) and the trans tail shaft centered in the tunnel area. (rear mount) then weld everything in. Then take the engine out again to pretty up all your mounts.

Go with it if its level. Good explanation. Think your on the right track now. Good eye Chad. My Dad all ways told me I had a crooked eye. If I put something on the wall and it looked straight to me, he would tell me is crooked. When I put the level on it,It was crooked. Case closed- Dad was right.

With the mounting jig in place, measure from each tube, forward to the radiator support panel, and rearwards to common points. This will tell you if the mounts are square, or not. Great job so far. Keep it up.

I would loosen the bolts that hold the motor mounts on the engine. Or make sure that the premade crossmember fits on the motor mounts the way the motor mounts are bolted onto the engine right now. I’m pretty sure that’s your problem. That’s a great idea welding the bolts together as a jig, however you have to make sure the motor mounts are lined up to fit the premade crossmember that you used for your pattern.

The best way to do engine mounts is the way you did it the first time . Since there is slots in the engine mounts you do all of your adjustments on the rubber mounts adjustments , set the engine in place and weld it in . I wouldn't worry about very little clearance on the headers because most of the time you will have to dent the headers in some places to get the proper clearances. Do what it takes to get the engine properly positioned. 90 % of the time it will not fit properly if not fitted with the engine in place.

If you twist the drivers side mount about 4 0r 5 degrees counterclockwise you will get more clearance for the steering box and the centerline of the engine and tranny will intersect the center of the rear axle. I mean clockwise viewed from the top.

Chad is the Tbird level? You might have the mount on the driver side twisted a little bit and that is throwing you off measure from the firewall to your mount on each side to see if it is the same distance

Use a factory 67 mustang motor mount ,it fits right in place in the 58 chassis like factory . That transmission is a no go in a car without raising the whole tunnel to clear top of transmission .

measure from the backside of thr right motor moumt to the fireqwall then measure left side to firewall one ofr them are catty wompus also turn your msde bolt holder dround and then flip it over it shoild fit all 4 ways

I see Chad use a level often but never see him check how level the rest if the car is. If the rest of the car is off (because of a saggy suspension on one side, jack stands not exact, even lower air in a tire, whatever), whatever is level is going to be off in relation to the rest of the car if the rest of the car isn't level

I think you may need to remove the mount on the motor & make sure it will slip over your gussets. they look like they will have some interference. may need to grind the gusset down for clearance. work progresses and looks great.

Looks as if you do need to move that engine mount on the right side ( when sitting in the engine enclosure, if you move it with the plate pointing a little bit toward the centre line of the compartment it will not only allow you to gain more space (the reason you don't want to move it) away from that obstruction..and allow the left side engine mount to move further toward the grill and give you the centreing you are looking for....
