Nice you got the 66 core (3.3%) with that stuff unless repairing old corroded stuff or desoldering you dont need the extra flux. Or if doing SMD you may need it but you'd be surprised that you dont really need it.

Amtech NC-559-ASM is no-clean flux. Don't use it together with rosin core solder. Get no-clean solder to make repairs with it. Or better yet, buy some rosin based tacky flux. Mg chemicals 8342 should be fine. There's basically 3 types of solder/flux. No-Clean: (very hard to clean) which is meant for doing a small repair then leave the residue on the pcb. It should harden or at least become inert and not damage the motherboard all types of fluxes and solder is available in no-clean versions. Water soluble: Clean using soapy water afterwards, best option for components that don't have holes or cavities in them. Can be rather expensive, solders and fluxes of this type are readily available too. Rosin based: Rosin core solder is probably the most popular, use it together with either pure rosin or rosin based fluxes , pens or tacky.. This can be cleaned with either pure isopropyl alcohol or a mixture of 50% isopropyl alcohol and 50% acetone.

I haven't found any problem with the Harbor Freight(Schneider) brand electrical solder. 8oz for $19.99 is a good price. Caused me some recent confusion as I though I'd bought a 1lb roll.

Hello I have just bought some Jinhu 60/40 Chinese solder, it's virtually unusable, terrible stuff. Avoid like the plague!.

The kester also probably has activated rosin. Just got tired of the crappy ModeElectronics solder i have, and got a roll of the kester myself. Even flux did not fix the cheap solder. Use a brass pot scrubber thingy, rather then a sponge/water to clean the tip, (or use distilled water). The chlorine in the water hurts the iron tip.

Best solder and iron combo is Kester solder and Hakko ( FX600 etc ) Iron using this combo for about 20 years now. Never an issue, rapid heat recovery makes all the difference.

Weller w1010 and hakko 888 are both good priced stations

Both solders you demonstrated worked fine. Do NOT buy or use lead free solder with Bismuth or Copper.

Caused me some recent confusion as I though I'd bought a 1lb roll. I will say I don't consider a joints "shinyness" as a judgement of it's quality. My #1 criteria is that it works and holds up over time. I have been in search of a thinner solder with the same properties(for some kit projects I've come across with tiny pads), and have yet to find something to my liking.

Man for the price of around $11 you are better off with the one from Amazon. That’s still pretty good if you ask me. I can’t justify over a little shine difference
