Havoc on Forming Mobb Deep, Creating Classic Albums, Losing Prodigy (Full Interview)

After the untimely death of Prodigy, DJ Vlad sits down with his longtime friend and the other half of Mobb Deep, Havoc. Havoc details what it was like growing up in Queensbridge, their first rap names, and reveals Prodigy turned down a deal to work with him at first. The producer then goes on to talk about making their first album, Prodigy teaching him how to sample and them getting a deal at LOUD records.
Throughout the conversation Havoc discusses some of the milestones in their career from the 'Hennesy' shirts, creating "Shook Ones," dissing 2Pac before his death, their beef with Jay-Z, and what it was like seeing Lil Kim write her "Quiet Storm" verse. Hav also speaks on the rumor of P choking on an egg and the cause of his death before looking back on the legacy that they left in hip hop.
Listen to Havoc pay respect to his brother above.

No too many people in this world can say they have a childhood friend and you knew them longer than you didn't. They were brothers. Fought each other but fought back to back with each other. Cried together, laughed together and got to experience all of life with each other. Poor together and rich together. RIP

If you were an 80's baby like me that was into hip-hop heavy, you had to feel for Prodigy when that whole "Takeover" situation happened (which was devastating to Mobb Deep's career, especially P's). For those that don't know, it was like the perfect shitstorm when it all went down. First off, there wasn't any social media or smartphones back then, so the vast majority of people didn't see the actual pic; all they had was Jay-Z's lyrics, which called it a pic of a ballerina (which was a lie). Second, it just so happened to be the time that Mobb Deep lost a step (especially P's skills on the mic). Not even a few years prior, P was hands down one of the Top 5 in NY and Hav was considered one of the best NY beatmakers. But somewhere around "Murda Muzik" and "HNIC", P lost a big step lyrically. Havoc was still making good beats, but the NY sound was changing to the Kanye West/Just Blaze sound (which just so happened to be the "Rocafella" sound). Add to that fact that Jay-Z was ascending to true GOD status on the mic, and it was like a VW Beetle speeding head-on into a brick wall. Even when P tried to fire back, it was just sub-par compared to what Jay and the Roc were doing. P and the Mobb eventually made it out of the hole, but it sucks that they were hurt so badly by a diss song that wasn't even accurate (altho it was a dope song). Regardless, no amount of diss songs could erase the legacy of Prodigy and Mobb Deep. P will forever be one of the greatest of all time imo. Same goes for Hav, on the production tip. Together, they'll go down in history as one of the best hip-hop duos/groups of all time, up there with Gang Starr, ATCQ, Wu-Tang, and NWA (among others). On a side note, it really sucks that P and Nas didn't work together more during their primes. Can you imagine if they were able to push the egos aside and did a group album during that "Infamous/Hell on Earth" period? Nas & P with Hav and The Alchemist producing? With AZ , Cormega, Big Noyd, and Raekwon dropping features (and maybe a Primo beat or two)??? Sweet Jesus, that would've been incredible...
