This is the ultimate must-try shave ice dessert bucket list. From Matsumoto Shave Ice, which is by far the most well-known shave ice place in Hawaii to Waiola Shave Ice, and Shimazu Store.
In this video, you’ll find endless flavors, toppings, colors, shapes, and sizes. If you’re a dessert person, you’ll love Hawaiian shave ice - and there is even a giant size shave ice!
But first, a quick history about Shave Ice in Hawaii...
In the mid-1800s, Immigrants from Japan came here to work in the plantation fields. To cool down, they would use their tools to shave off large blocks of ice, then coat it with fruit juice. This the Japanese treat called "Kakigori" which translates to "Shaved Ice". But we call it "Shave Ice" here in Hawaii. The Matsumoto family carried this Japanese tradition and started a Shave Ice Shop exactly 70 years ago, and today, it is by far the most well-known Shave Ice place in Hawaii. Matsumoto Shave Ice, which is the first place I'm reviewing.
