If you’re a fan of garlic shrimp, this Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp Scampi recipe is an absolute “must try.” The procedure is very simple, but you will have to decide whether to do them the traditional way, with the shells on for max flavor, or the more “user-friendly” way, with the shells off. I show both in the video, and they were equally amazing.

For fried and sauted shrimp dishes, my grandma taught us to peel the skin but dont throw > cook it together with the meat and set aside when plating, or take it out of the pan if we add other ingredients in (we often add in pineapples and fresh bell peppers). It gives the dish that wonderful smell and umami without the hassle when eating ^^ I hope you give it a try Chef. Love u

It seems that all of Cornelius' comments were reported and removed by RU-vid. Glad I didn't have to read them, I come here to relax and learn in a convivial atmosphere. At my restaurant I wanted to offer more gluten free options. So I tried coating the shrimp in rice flour instead of wheat flour before they were sauteed. I found the rice flour to deliver a lighter and crispier result. I never looked back.

Rice flour makes anything crispier when fried, including southern fried chicken (and its vegan counterpart).

I think wheat flour is worse than the other starch options, but rice flour has better flavor than corn starch.

We've been living off island for 2 years now and all I want is trips back up for shrimp truck. Thank you for posting this so I can now make it at home while dreaming we're back living on island. Also, Giovannis actually marinate their shrimp in garlic olive oil before cooking, and the best way to eat the shrimp is to hold it in your mouth, suck the juices out, then pull the shrimp out. So Ono!

I made this for my husband and myself for dinner and it was a winner! Absolutely delicious! I might try it with peeled shrimp for a less messy eating experience. The flavors are amazing!

BAGRYM: You can usually find vegan shrimp in the freezer at your local Asian grocery. As well as vegan pork, fish, beef, poultry, ribs, etc. Many Buddhist holidays are meat-free. I've tried them and I like them, and the ingredient list looks safe. You can also make superfirm tofu (I get mine st Trader Joe's) taste like shellfish with the addition of sea vegetables and other umami-.rich ingredients, for example you can even get delicious furikake Trader Joe's, readymade without added MSG. So you have options. ;)

@@donnellemorrison6761 crabs, prawns, lobsters, all those crawlers get mir swelling up and rash. Nothing that Kills me, Just a total Buzzkill. Mussels, oysters and such arent to my taste. So i'll usually Just stick with the fish.

I've seen that quick peeling of a lot of garlic before, but in just a paper bag. Worked just as well and possibly easier that 2 bowls.

Made this for dinner tonight and want to pass my appreciation to Chef John for another lovely recipe. My wife thought it was a little dry overall, as I served about a dozen #20 shrimp on a healthy couple rice scoops; I suppose I could even out the ratio a little better(?). I enjoyed the flavor, simple as it is, and will make it again for sure. Using a large skillet, I was able to maintain "a single layer" and one cooking batch. After all, I am the simp in the kitchen cooking shrimp :)

There was one shrimp truck in Hawaii called the blue water shrimp truck that I liked that put the shrimp into a pool of this garlicky buttery pink sauce. It was intense. The sauce mixed amazing with the rice. Out of all the food trucks on the island, that was my favorite. I need to find a copycat recipe.. It was unbelievably good.

This looks tasty! As someone who lives on Oahu, I have a strong opinion on my favorite shrimp truck. Famous Kahuku is my absolute favorite! This recipe is a great resource if you want an idea of the shrimp truck society here. Way to go, chef John! Edit; if you go to famous kahuku, ask for garlic all over 😋

This looked SO good with all that crispy shrimp UNTIL you started peeling it off and setting it aside. I hadn't not realized you were cooking the shrimp with the shells on. After I got over my crying and yelling, "NOOOOO....." about it, I thought, of course, that I could fry the shrimp with the coating on and the shells off. To me, it was like peeling all the "fried" off a piece of fried chicken. Love your recipes and save them in the hopes I'll be able to fix them in my current retirement days. Great channel and makes me wish I had the time and energy to prepare a "whole lotta" your foods. Thanks for making everything delicious. Yum, Chef John. Stay safe and healthy. The correct method of eating: hold the tail, stick the unpeeled shrimp in your mouth, suck off all that garlic/butter/seasoning on the outside, THEN peel it and eat. Ask me how I know. lol.

You need to go to Hawaii if only to eat the amazing food. Once you have Giovanni's Garlic shrimp from the food truck on the North Shore, things will never be the same. Grew up in Hawaii and still think about GIovanni's Garlic Shrimp weekly!

I'd have to disagree. Personally I always peel my shrimp as I use the shells and make a shrimp stock. It 100% has tons of flavor.

Nah it has a ton of flavor. Toast up the shells in some olive oil and add water and aromatics, let simmer for a couple hours. Delicious shrimp stock

Part of the fun of eating at the shrimp truck is using your hand and sucking the flavor off the shells! Or if you grill um till the shells are crispy before the saute, can just eat it altogether

Made this tonight for my family and they loved it! One mistake I made was to add shrimp to the spice mix and let it sit for aprox 30 min. It was a bit salty.
